2. Kant:
‘Things in itself cannot be known’
Time & Place + 12 Categories of Knowledge
The acquired knowledge is modified. No more the actual one
Husserl wanted to know the real nature or Essence thing in itself
What is Phenomenology to Husserl ?
A philosophical method to discover Phenomena ~ Real
Phenomenology is nothing but A Priori and intuitive investigation of
Phenomena. (Meditation)
Back-Drop
3. Distortions/Impurities
Presupposed Biases, Prejudices
Natural Laws Psychological Beliefs
‘Both the impurities are distorting my consciousness’
Rationalist: Reason, all knowledge is A Priori/Inate
Empiricist: Sensory Experience/Impressions
Hegel: Absolute Idea /Dialectic Method
Kant: Synthetic A Priori Judgement
Absolute Poverty/Presuppositionlessness
Without any bias, prejudice or presupposition
Phenomenological Reduction/Method
A method to reduce these distortions
A Priori investigation of phenomena Meditation
A process that occurs in two organic moments
o Epoché
o Reduction Proper
4. Epoché
Bracketing…disconnecting from the external world…..Internal Oriented
Reduction Proper
Psychological:
Mental states: Moods, Feelings etc must be reduced to let consciousness
function purely
Eidetic:
Reduce accidental properties/characteristics
After Eidetic reduction remains intuitive knowledge not direct sense experience
This intuition is not happening automatically but in some consciousness the
consciousness that is meditating upon a phenomenon
Essence is located in a consciousness
Essence is universal but it is not independent of consciousness
Essence is neither real nor unreal rather it is Irreal
Essence and consciousness are corelated
Still this reduction is incomplete as essence cannot be a property of any
particular or individual consciousness.
5. Transcendental Consciousness:
Empirical Ego / Consciousness : Soul
Reduction of Individual Consciousness : Pure Consciousness
Transcendental Consciousness is the base of everything
Bracketing or reduction of Transcendental Consciousness is
impossible
Intentional Consciousness:
Consciousness is always intentional or directional.
It directs towards something. E g . Book, table, pen etc
Editor's Notes
Every sensory experience has to go through time & space and 12 categories of knowledge hence the acquired knowledge is modified.
Psychology states human consciousness is a mental state which is constantly changing hence cannot give a universal knowledge so it will leads us to skepticism bcoz of relativity of knowledge.
