1. EVALUATION 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what
do you feel you have learnt in the from it
to the full product?
2. My preliminary cover and main
task cover
Unfortunately, when it came to looking back on my preliminary front cover on my blog, I couldn’t open the image and I couldn’t
open it when looking on my memory stick. However, when searching through the macs that I had used to design it, I did find a
image that was distorted, with only half of the image, so I will just have to focus on that part. From looking at both images, there is
a clear difference from when I started this project, to now, and I do think I’ve improved a lot! Based on the front cover, I think I’ve
learnt how to order and structure my sell lines and tag lines in a better way, as in my preliminary cover I did try and structure my
work but it does look like everything is just thrown onto the cover. As I’ve had to think in a lot of detail about my model and the
way she represents herself, I did learn more about how to take a photo and by doing certain poses what they represent, I had to
think about this more in my main task then my preliminary as the model would attract my audience and encourage them to buy
it. I has to also think about the type of mise en scene my model was posing behind, but this was mainly for the preliminary task as I
wanted my model cut out and just contain her body on the page. I’ve also learnt that different genres demand different needs, for
example my preliminary task needs to look innocent and positive for the audience of students, however my R&B magazine needs
to look sexy and seductive, in order to promote a male gaze to look and buy it. I deliberately made my model look sexy and
provocative, to attract my male gaze as I am giving them something to look at. Linking into this point, I’ve also learnt a lot about
the power and control a gatekeeper has, as I have been the one that controls what people are reading and looking at. On top of
this, I also had to think about the type of language I used, in order for me to show certain connotations about the genre of
magazine. I learnt a lot in this, as, for my preliminary task I had to make sure I used language that appealed to students, and
language they would understand, however my main task was the complete opposite as I had to use words that link into the R&B
genre and language that suggested a sex appeal like- ‘strips off ’. This was pretty hard as I wasn’t used to using that language in my
school work.
3. My preliminary contents page
and main task contents page.
Throughout my contents pages and my front covers, I had to pay close attention to the 4F’s, however this was more
associated with the main task as I learnt this after the preliminary task. This meant that I had to concentrate of this more in my
main task. Throughout the main task, I wanted my front cover and contents page to have certain frames in the interior area,
meaning I had to structure each sentence one by one, for example the contents title. I wanted the words close together and
touching each other, however I learnt a lot from this as when I first tried it was near enough impossible as it wouldn’t let me,
but I experienced with different programs to get what I wanted. The format for the two different content pages where very
different, in this I had to learn how to give off a student approach and a R&B style as well, which was through the use of
different fonts and colours. I also learnt that I had to be aware of where I would put certain information, this was mainly in the
main task as I had to follow conventions from my star mode, so I wanted the mast head in the right hand corner and the text
boxes down the middle.
Also, I’ve learnt a lot in time keeping and organsation skills, in order for me to keep up with the work load, giving time
schedules and mini deadlines for when certain pieces of work will and should be done and to make sure that I brake the work
load up to make it easier for myself- which was very hard!
4. Overall..
Overall, I think I’ve learnt a lot from the start of this project up till
now. On top of everything I’ve previously said, this project has
mainly taught me that people buy magazines for particular reasons
and for the type of genre it is, it may satisfy them and entertain
them but you have to give the audience what they want in order
for them to buy it.
