2. Q1) WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?
Looking at my results it is
clear which is the more
dominating gender that
prefers pop – females.
Now that I have this
information I will make
sure to directly aim my
products more towards
females and what appeals
to theme e.g. feminine
colour scheme,
fashionable, stylistic
costumes, hair, makeup
etc.
3. Q2) WHAT IS YOUR AGE?
The age group I wanted to target
was actually probably 16+ so
these results are slightly
unreliable as I did not make a
row for ages under 18, however I
am hoping that the results
wouldn’t have been that
different anyway. I have asked a
couple of 16 year olds anyway
these questions, both of them
female, and they replied with
similar responses to the
collected data anyway. I would
say the maximum age my
products would be aimed at is
27. After this age I feel an
audience would want something
4. Q3) WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?
Every participant was a
student which is not
surprising, and I actually
interviewed a couple of my
friends who have kindly
answered the survey for me.
As well as being a student,
most people my age do have a
part time job, ranging from
Waitrose to Wembley Stadium,
and they will often pass by
advertisements on their
travels, as well as listen and
watch music videos using 3G
on their phones on platforms
such as YouTube and Vimeo.
Therefore it will be students,
5. Q4) REGIONAL IDENTITY?
Most of the participants are from the
centre of liveliness – London. This is
extremely beneficial, as coming from
London myself, I know how digipaks,
music videos and new albums are
displayed in the city; on the sides of
buses, in trains, billboards, in the
Squares, posters, flyers, etc. From my
trips up to London, I have seen many
albums and artists being advertised
and know the places in London where
my genre, pop, would fit in and where
it would not e.g. the West End would
be suitable, Soho would not.
As for the participant from Scotland,
well I’ll have to be extra imaginative
and do some research into Scottish
6. Q5) WHAT IS YOUR ETHNICITY?
(PLEASE SELECT ALL THAT
APPLY.)
As all of my responses are from
British people, my marketing
strategies will be aimed with British
stereotypes e.g. advertising the new
album by a fish and chip shop, and
displaying my actress Beth as the
typical ‘English Rose’.
7. Q6) WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING
METHODS DO YOU USE THE MOST AND
THE LEAST TO KEEP UP WITH
ARTISTS?
This is where the answers got very varied
and it’ll be difficult to satisfy every single
one of these audiences, however I will try
my best. The most popular methods proved
to be music magazines, online and offline
adverts. This last one surprises me a little as
I would have thought that with the student
age group online and technological
methods would’ve been the most popular
and I was just going to create an advert for
online usage, but now I will plan to create
an offline advert to that can say, go on a
bus shelter.
I am also very shocked by the low
percentage of answers for social networking
as stereotypically younger people
communicate through networking sites such
as Twitter and Facebook which are now
8. Q7) DO YOU PREFER MALE OR
FEMALE POP ARTISTS
This was the 50/50
question and I got a
50/50 answer in return.
Due to this response,
though I am just
creating an advert and
music video and digipak
centered around a
female pop artist, if I
were to make the whole
music magazine, I
would make sure I
include both gender
artists.
9. Q8) PLEASE STATE BELOW WHAT YOU
CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST
ATTRACTIVE FEATURES OF A POP
DIGIPAK
I left this as an open question to
vary the questionnaire and let the
participants express themselves
more deeply on this question.
Though it was qualitative data I still
a common response as 2
participants said the image was the
most attractive thing. This will be
my main focus then, however I will
still pay attention to the other
responses, colours and behind the
scenes information as well as
anything else I consider to be
important.
10. Q9) PLEASE RANK BELOW WHAT YOU
WOULD CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST
APPEALING FEATURES OF A POP
MUSIC VIDEO I allowed the participants to rank the most
appealing features of a music video, and I
got all sorts of responses. The highest
ranked aspect was varied shots, and so I will
make sure I use a wide spectrum of different
angles and composition. The least popular
was the singer’s inclusion ie. How much
they are on screen for. This is not too
surprising because when music videos was
first released, it was all about the artist e.g.
Michael Jackson, however as the years
progressed, music video directors became
less interested in the actual artist and more
about the song and the lyrics, which is when
narrative music videos started.
11. Q10) DO YOU PREFER A
NARRATIVE OR PERFORMANCE
BASED MUSIC VIDEO?
Following on from the previous
question, these results are not
shocking, because music videos and
their USP, whether it be narrative or
performance is attractively different
to every individual. Thus this was the
result I was expecting, to have a bit of
both. The original music video for
‘The Power of Love’ is around 80%
performance and 20% narrative; really
the only non performance sequences
is the camera gliding around the
house. I will vary my version from this
and make sure my video is a mixture
of both.
