Q7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it, to your final
product?
Introduction
First of all, the preliminary task’s requirements were much less
than the requirements for the final media product. Therefore the
task lacked creativity and had too many guidelines to experiment
with the editing tools on Serif MoviePlus X6. Since the preliminary
task had no storyline, it had no advantage of likeable characters or
being able to use complex editing to contribute to the meaning of
it.
In terms of what you’re being marked on in the preliminary to the
full product: the preliminary brief merely states that there should
be a match en action involved, and that it should be of a person
sitting down at a desk where they will have a conversation with
another person. However, the real task requires you to use mise en
scene, camera work, editing, and sound to add to the meaning and
message of the film opening.
Editing!
 In the preliminary task the editing only goes as far as
ensuring there is a match en action involved. However, in
the main task lots of editing is required in order to give a
sense of pace (with fades, changing the duration of certain
parts), to fit music in, to add text on screen etc..
 Also, all of these elements add meaning to the real product
to suggest things about the character and improve the
audiences consumption and perception of the movie
opening.
 There is a lot more room for complex editing in the real
product than the preliminary!
 I feel as though I have learnt a lot about editing and how it
affects movies since doing my preliminary task.
Adding things in…
 In the preliminary task I did not have to add anything in such as text
on screen or non-diegetic sound.
 Text on screen – in my main movie I feel that the colour of the text
really helped to set the theme and to emphasise who my target
audience were. It also helped to distinguish between an adult
rom-com (which would use red) and a teen rom-com (which
would use pink, like ours).
 Music – in my preliminary task, the only sound could be dialogue;
which was even limited in creativity. In the main task, I used
music which most of my target audience commented on for
helping them detect whether it was their ‘cup of tea’.
 From the progression from my preliminary task to my main task I
have learnt just how important sound and text are in films to
create certain ideas/moods.
Camera Work
 The camera work was very limited in the preliminary
task since, for the most part, the characters were
sitting down. Therefore, it was nearly impossible to
include tracking shots, or pan shots that effectively
contributed to it.
 For the main task, I used camera movements such as
tracking and camera shots such as mid-shots to
help to create the hectic atmosphere.
 Overall, in terms of camera work, I have learnt that
the camera shots actually tell the audience a little
something about what the director intended for the
movie to be about.
Equipment
 Looking back at my preliminary task now, the thing I
notice most, is how shaky the camera shots are.
 This is because, when I filmed my preliminary task I didn’t
use any equipment other than the camera; the same
goes for the first time I filmed my main task.
 The second time I filmed my main task I used a tripod
which contributed massively to the stability of the
camera work and made the film look overall more
professional.
 From this, I have learnt that to produce a good quality film
you need to use all the right equipment to ensure this
happens. Also, I’ve learnt more about how difficult the
production of films actually is!
To conclude…
 To conclude, the whole progression from the preliminary
task, to the main task has definitely enabled me to see
how much the four elements: mise en scene, camera
work, editing, and sound, contribute to how the
audience perceive the movie.
 The things I have learnt about the software and equipment
also contribute to my new found understanding of film
and how the production of films works.
