1. QUESTION 7: Looking back at your preliminary task what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full
product?

2. Preliminary task
Looking back at our preliminary task and then our thriller opening we can see
the big difference between the two.
Our preliminary task looks quite amateur as it involved basic filming and
editing techniques. One of them is the 180 degree rule during the dialogue.
This was when we first learnt how to not confuse the audience during a
dialogue. We also used over the shoulder shots when two characters are having
a discussion following an establishing shot which helps the audience place the
characters in the setting. We also used close ups in order to show emotion of
the character.
We paid a lot of attention to planning and organising so we could finish our
project on time. We had timetables for our discussion meetings, filming times
and more. We learnt how vital a good organised timetable was in achieving our
objectives.
Editing, sound and lighting were also very basic which I am going to explain
more below…
3. Editing
The editing for our preliminary task was pretty basic, as we
only used cut and join. Now looking at our final product
editing is much more complex and there’s a wide usage of
many different techniques. Apart from cutting shots and
editing them together we also learnt how to add filters to
have a consistent coulour during the whole scene making it
more realistic and professional. We learnt how to add
effects such as slow motion to create a dramatic effect on
the audience, fading in and out and cutting to black and
then back to image again.
4. Camerawork
Camerawork is also much complicated in our final product. We
used many different shot each emphasising a specific
meaning. We used establishing shots in order to set the
setting, tracking shot of our character, close ups showing
our characters emotion or highlighting the importance of a
specific object. We also used depth of field to make a
specific moment more dramatic, over the shoulder shots and
point of view shots in order to make the audience feel more
engaged.
5. lighting
During our preliminary task the only lighting we used was
natural lighting. Our final product doesn’t incude many
artifical lighting either, because darkness and the street
lamps made perfect match, however a flood light did come in
use during specific moments. We used the flood light to
create shadows and reflection of light when the environment
looked more dark than expected during particular shot such
as the first close up of the girls hands.
6. sound
There is definitely huge progress on sound from our
preliminary task to our final thriller opening. The
preliminary task only contains diegetic sound which does
make it look very amaetur. We learnt how to create our own
sound through Garage Band and combining digetic and non -
diegetic sound to achieve the desired effect of the
audience. We used different sound options such as percussion
and a piano connected to the Mac in order to create
different sound which would set a certain mood.
7. planning
Planning was of course one of the main elements that helped
us finish our project on time. We had a timetable for
everything. Planning is vital during the pre-production
process, in order to have an easy and quick production
process. We created mood boards, storyboard, animatic and
group timetables which leaded us on the right direction to
the production process.
