This document compares the cover design of the student's media product "Creechur" to the real magazine "Kerrang". It notes that Creechur was based on Kerrang's style and format to be as realistic as possible. While Creechur follows conventions like the large masthead, featured article, and eye-catching coverline, it breaks from tradition by using a longer shot for the main image rather than a close-up. This challenges magazine conventions but still draws the viewer's eye through framing and composition. The simplified background focuses more on the image, and colors appeal to both sexes like Kerrang. Fonts are also kept consistent with Kerrang's house style to target the

4. Comparison: Kerrang v Creechur
Creechur was based on Kerrang, to make it as close to the genre as
possible. The example I have given, compared to Creechur, clearly
shows the similarities in style, format, colour and design. However, the
Kerrang cover has a medium close-up, where my one is more of a
long shot. This breaks the convention of magazines, but I find that it
works because of the framing of the image. Also, eye contact is still
held due to the arrangement of the picture. To add to this, I removed
the background from the image – this meant that it was the main focus
of the page. This was yet another feature that is on most covers of
Kerrang. The colours used tend to be considered as masculine,
however, I find that they attract both sexes. Not many fonts have been
used – in keeping with the house style – for both. The target is the
same for each magazine: 18-24 (roughly), therefore this many
similarities is necessary to ensure that the right “kinds” of people are
attracted. I tried to make sure that the artists featured on the front
cover are known to people who like the same genre, so as to flow, and
again, attract the right group of people.
