Our Zombies Ourselves Summary
Comparative Analysis of "Vampires Never Die" and "Our Zombies, Ourselves" In "vampires never
die" Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan use technology advancement to explain the creation of
vampires, also using mixed vocabulary and expressions to explain a more serious tone. On the other
hand, James Parker uses the development of the modern zombie to explain the stereotype of these
creatures in his article "Our Zombies, Ourselves," while using more playful expressions to show his
tone. These three authors seem to have the same concepts while writing about these monsters, but
still disagreeing on some points. While there are some key differences in these two articles, they are
similar in many ways also. All three authors agree and disagree on several points, such as they both
appeal to more intellectual audiences, and they both write about conformity with the want to fit in,
while disagreeing on what they use to explain their monster's general idea. Firstly, the authors all
aim for a more intellectual audience that find horror stories entertaining. These articles were written
for The New York Times and The Atlantic Monthly, which are both papers for very intelligent
people. The New York Times and The Atlantic Monthly are both known for being very complex
reads, so people must be very intelligent to understand them. Authors Guillermo Del Toro and
Chuck Hogan use high vocabulary words such as "enthrone," "pandemic," and "archetypal" to show
the difficulty of this reading. This

Essay about Stephen King and Horror Films
As the main topic suggests, what are the types of horrors associated with media? First off, you
might want to think about what your definition of fear is, what unsettles you, and what rubs you the
wrong way. Well according to Stephen King, this can be broken down into three types; which is the
gross–out, horror, and terror. The gross–out in this case is what it is. It's things we as humans find
disgusting, morbid, or diseased. To provide an example; picture yourself waking up in your bed, all
seems normal right? You then look around and notice a severed torso sitting on your computer chair.
Morbid right? Onto the next type which is horror. Stephen King places the supernatural under this
category; it's creatures or unnatural happenings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A good example of psychological horror in video game form would be Silent Hill 2; which focuses
on the main protagonist emotional and mental stability. Silent Hill 2 which was produced by Team
Silent focuses on our main protagonist James Sunderland as he ventures into the mysterious town
named "Silent Hill" to meet his wife at their special place after receiving a letter from.; the thing is
though is that his wife has been dead for quite few years now. Questioning his sanity own sanity, he
still sought out the reason to why he had received the letter. From the beginning it's rather evident
that James is not in the right state of mind and becomes steadily unreliable, to the point where his
sanity is questioned. This becomes more apparent as the story continues when the letter he received
from his deceased wife slowly disappears. To back this claim of James not being as sane as he
appears, let's take into account the monsters he has killed throughout the game. They emit very
human like screams. Mixing this in with our main protagonists falling mental health, can we assume
this isn't some elaborate mental breakdown formed by James? Can we just assume the monsters he's
killed so far actually real... or are they actually real people? This is what we generally define as
psychological horror. The ambiguity that clouds the characters, their mental state as the driving
point for the narrative, the dark

Popular Culture: The Slender Man
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few you've probably heard about the stories
about a creature known as The Slender Man.
He looks like a man, but he's very tall, some say up to 8ft tall, with elongated, stick thin arms and
legs. Some art depicts him with black tentacles that protrude from his back which he can retract at
will. His face is blank and featureless, almost although it is covered by a thin veil and he's always
wearing a black or pinstripe suit with coattails and sometimes a bowler or top hat. He appears to
float around rather than walk, which suggests the possibility of him being an ethereal being rather
than a creature or a man, and it's said that he can materialize in any place. According to the stories
he lives in the woods and stalks children, although what his motives are remain a mystery.
The elusive Slender Man might not be real but his influence on popular culture can't be ignored –
he's an extremely popular figure especially with children and impressionable teenagers. But where
does he come from? Here are 15 creepy facts about Slender Man that you might not want to read

He also drew inspiration from the character known as the Tall Man in the 1979 movie Phantasm,
survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil and the literary work of H.P Lovecraft and

can barely be comprehended, and [which caused] unease and terror in a general population."

Darwinism : The Time Machine

Darwinism: The Time Machine
Darwinism is a theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin also called Darwinian Theory.
Darwin utilizes Thomas Malthus' principle of exponential population growth to debate the
possibility of infinite growth of population sizes which is tested by the limitations of geography and
natural resources that makes it impossible for an infinite number of beings to survive. The limitation
in resources results in species experience a "struggle for existence," creating a survival competition.
In this theory, Darwin stated that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural
selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual 's ability to compete, survive, and
reproduce. Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859 which argued that species
evolved to get better all the time. Some people used his theory to argue that members of the elite or
height of the social ladder were superior to the working class and impoverished due Darwin 's
"survival of the fittest", which is considered Social Darwinism. In one of the earliest examples of
science fiction, The Time Machine, H.G. Wells' introduces Social Darwinism along with the theory
of evolution.
In 1895 H.G. Wells' The Time Machine was published and dealt with the issues that were prevalent
during 1890s Britain, such as social inequality, which similarly affects society today. In this short

The Importance Of Camping With Small Children
Many people think taking a toddler camping is just asking for stress, headaches and complications.
Actually, your toddler can learn a lot at a young age from a trip into nature. Camping with small
children can be an entertaining experience while giving them the basic skills of life.
–Surroundings
For toddlers, life is one huge learning experience. The simplest, most basic functions of the natural
world are fascinating and eye–opening to them. Camping provides the opportunity to teach your
toddlers about nature and observing their surroundings. While sitting around the campsite, imagine
your toddler spotting a leaf falling from a tree and the fascination in their eyes as it slowly floats to
the ground. This is an opportunity to teach them about the different trees, leaves, plants and shrubs
that surround them.
–Basic Survival Skills
Children are never too young to begin learning basic survival skills. Here 's one that can be taught in
the form of a game. Bring some marbles in a bag that the toddler can carry. Other items can be used
as well, but stick with non–edible ones for this lesson, or one of mother nature 's little creatures may
just eat your lesson materials. Start at the edge of your campsite and choose a path into the woods
that is easy enough for them to walk with you. Have your toddler place marbles on the ground every
couple of feet to leave a trail to follow back to your site. Dropping and re–discovering the marbles
will not only be a fun game, but will give

How Can Survive On An Abandon Island?
Andrew Ringate Ms. Butkowski English 11A 10 February 2015 How to survive on an abandon
island Boom! You wake up on on a beach, sand blowing in your face, the ruffling of the trees in the
background, but you soon realize you 're all alone, scared, frightened you don 't know what to do.
You try to go back asleep, but you can 't the adrenaline of you just spraining your ankle from the
night before is running through your body, you begin to sweat and become thirsty what do you do?
There are many things that could happen in your dreams, but what if this happened in real life?
What if you were stuck on an island by yourself with no one to help, how would you survive, would
you? Water, its the most important thing in life, you need it for everything. After all, Earth is
covered with water, but 97.5% of it is saltwater, and the remaining 2.5% is fresh water (Holbrook).
According to "How Long Can You Live Without Water?," the human body is made of 65% water,
which means humans are especially vulnerable to dehydration, so if the conditions at room
temperature were right with no food, it is very possible you could last as long as 12 days in the the
right conditions, although a more likely estimate would be around 3–5 days without water ("How
Long"). So if you were stranded on an island your number one priority would be to locate water, but
what do you do if you can 't locate a freshwater lake or pond? There are many different techniques
you can do to get water, the first way is just

My Favorite Story Moment
I'm pretty lucky, my favorite story moment happens immediately. The story starts with a child
Oliver and a woman in her early 30s Emmeline I think they are the most important characters to the
story, because their actions set up why the story is happing, and why it is episodic. The fear felt by
first Emmeline and then by Oliver helps reinforce the horror the show has and will convey.
The aesthetic choices were the dark stage which sets up the horror theme of the performance. The
gothic clothing, which brings a specific period of time to mind, Victorian I think. And the sounds
such as the chorus announcing the "curse", the heavy beats and lighting in the background, which
also helps set the horror feel of the performance.
This performance reinforces the idea that you do not need much to have a powerful performance.
There were two people, a box, and door. This important scene did not need a ton of props, a lot of
space, or a full cast, just us the audience and them the performers. The way the actors spoke, their
accents help me to be transported to the scene. The space between the box and the exit is also
important to me. All it took to avoid the "curse" was a few steps.
I think the thing that made this story work was the passion, excitement and cohesion of the troop.
The entire story 4 different "episodes happen in the same space with nothing but minimal pros to
transport us the audience to this world. I think one way to make the performance more effective
would have been

I predict that scout and jem will not meet Boo. One reason they will not meet Boo is because they
are scared of Boo. According to the people in the town Boo looks very scary. He has a big scar on
his face. Also they believe he is six and a half feet tall. He has blood stained hands because he kills
animals and eats them. Boo has a bad reputation, he was in a gang. People say that he killed his dad
by stabbed him with a scissors. Also he only goes out at night, and he looks into windows and
stocks people. Another reason why they will not meet Boo is because he is locked in the house. The

William Golding 's The Lord Of The Flies
Is it better for someone to die for what they believe in, or is it better for someone to live and give up
their believes? In novels, films, and even in real life, there are martyrs, those who are killed for what
they think, and there are those who alter their morals to fit the status quo. These two types of people
can be further characterized into two groups: those who do not change are weak, and those who do
change are strong. Charles Darwin established a theory that states how what makes a person strong
or weak is how they decide to deal with change. The naturalist states that even though some are
vastly intelligent, kind, or dignified, they end up dying first because lack of adaptability, or refusal
to do so. In William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, Simon is an example of the sort of weakness
Darwin elaborates on in his theory. While he is the most wise out of the group and tries to help the
boys as much as he can, Simon is the first main character to die because he is unable to keep up with
the boys in both a physical and mental sense. Simon's untimely death was caused by his refusal to
abandon his civilized morals in order to abide by the principles of social darwinism in the ways of
the other boys. Simon stands out from the rest of the group because he does not kill and engage in
physical combat with the other boys, and his death is caused by his dismission of such violent
activity. Shortly after the boys arrive on the island, the majority of them, including Jack

Analysis Of The Movie The Martian
Throughout the movie, "The Martian," the story revolves around the main character, Mark Watney,
who has to survive alone on a Mars by utilizing his skills in botany, as well as other subjects. Mark
faces multiple problems throughout the movie, that make his survival extremly hard. Other than
botany, there were many other sciences used by Watney to survive on Mars. , including physics. An
example of this is when making a battery last longer on the rover, he removes the battery in order to
make the rover lighter, and he removed weight from the shuttle that was used to escape the planet.
Watney uses medical science (when he had to remove the piece of shrapnel and staple his wound.
Other problems included the lack of food, having the HAB (the headquarters for the mission), and
having to travel a large distance in a rover that was meant to only go a short distance. The first
problem he faced was not having enough food to survive until he could be rescued. Luckily, he had
a large amount of food for the crew that was left in the HAB. He calculates how long he could make
the rations last but comes to the conclusion that he will still not have enough food to last him until
the next manned mission to Mars. Mark rationalizes that through his botany skills he might be able
to grow food inside the HAB; he settles on potatoes. . He then uses his human waste, mixed with
water and Martian soil, to make soil suitable for growing potatoes. The next step of growing
potatoes was finding

Abenaki Nation but left there when she was just a baby "returned with her family to the Odanak

and her mother ran a boarding house." (historica) Alanis lived happily on the reserve "She recalls
those times as beautiful because of the colors of the brilliant ash wood splints used in making
baskets, the smell of the sweet grass in everyone 's homes, and the fond memories of beloved
relatives." (collections) until the age of 9 when her parents decided it was time to move and packed
the family up and moved to Trois–Rivières, located only 48 kilometres from their Reserve.

Historic Treaties And Its Effects On The Peoples Of This...
INSERT SOMETHING ABOUT SOCIOLOGY PAPER. Historic treaties continue to be relevant in
Canada today because ever since Christopher Columbus arrived to an undiscovered continent, he
managed to employ detrimental consequences to the peoples of this land. The treaty was one of the
colonial processes that would allow for the exploitation of the First Nations. Many Aboriginal
Signatories to treaties understood the treaty agreements as being the foundation of a relationship
with the Crown and that this relationship would be based on co–existence versus the crown, creating
them as a surrendering of the land with only small reserve retained, and limited hunting in those
territories. These treaties are important today because they try to go about who has land–claim to a
certain area and they show that some treaties were compiled by the British with the poorer
intentions of the Aboriginals. However, the documents and treaties that the British drafted and
passed, would create a paper–trail of vast amounts of exploitation. Treaties show prevalence today
because they can demonstrate how convoluted the history of Canada's relationships with the
Aboriginal peoples is. One factor that makes this history perplexing is trying to fathom who has
claim to the lands that people stand on. Moreover, when the government was willing to substantiate
what scheme they wanted to employ in order to solve the issue of cohabitation of the aboriginal
peoples. Historically, in the fur trader era, it was

I know it's a Halloween song because it states " I am the wind blowing through your hair." It also
says "I am the clown with a tear–away face." These things aren't associated with Christmas but
rather Halloween. This was my final reason as to why this is a Halloween movie. Some people think
this movie is a Christmas movie, but, I'm going to prove them wrong. People think it's a Christmas
movie because they try to make Christmas in Halloween Town. Well, to me, Christmas is a time of
joy and not scary things, like they have in a Halloween Town Christmas. For example, the sleigh is a
coffin, the reindeer are just skeletons, the toys are shrunken heads and hats made from bats (etc),and
the cops are called in Christmas Town. This is why people think it's a Christmas movie; but it's not
really. This essay has shown you why The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie
instead of a Christmas movie. This is because the main setting is in Halloween Town, the people of
Halloween Town ruin Christmas, and the opening song is "This is Halloween." So, if someone ever

Response Essay On 'Begging For Change'
Nothing good comes from something bad. This is the lesson being taught throughout the story of
"Begging for Change". Raspberry Hill experiences this with other characters and it helps to show
how much friendships and money are really valued. Therefore, Zora supports the theme with the
situation that her and Raspberry were put in. When Zora and her father invited Raspberry to lunch,
Raspberry digged in Zora's purse and stole a large sum of cash. Later at lunch, Zoras father gave
both girls eighty dollars each for their field trip. After this happened Raspberry felt really bad and
was too embarrassed to give the money back. Henceforth, her friendship with Zora became troubled
when she found out. On pg. 47, Sharon G Flake wrote how Raspberry narrates the issue. "Zora
hasn't mentioned the money, but she doesn't treat me the same anymore. At lunchtime, she sits at
another table. I asked her the other day what her problem was, wondering if she was really going to

Night of the Living Dead gave the world its first zombie and since then the zombie has not stopped
thirsting for human brains. Today, the new movie "Zombieland" has just been released into theaters
so the zombie is still going strongly through culture. Night of the Living Dead was a serious horror
look at zombies but society has turned a once terrifying genre into some humor. Spoofs like 'Shawn
of the Dead' and 'Zombieland' "has fun messing around with the rules of the post–apocalyptic
zombie movie genre" (Machosky). However the reason the undead have survived so long is because
they have broadened their publicity range. Not only does the world see zombies in movies, but
mankind must "watch out for Nazi zombies rising from the grave in videos games like 'Dead Snow'
and 'Call of Duty: World at War'" (Greene). Zombies have been expanded into music as well with
the Kingston Trio's release of the song "Zombie Jamboree". Even books have been used to spread
the disease, such as "at Borders zombie literature runs the gambit from Pride and Prejudice and
Zombies to Zombie Haiku" (Greene). In addition, David Lubar has just recently expanded the
zombie craze to elementary school children with his newest novel, My Rotten Life (Lauer–
Williams). This is a children's book about a middle school student who is also a zombie. Zombies,
once a scary menace only for the brave at heart, have become a friendlier topic for everyone.

instinct and essential. When the bombs are dropped there is not much time depending on how far
away the bomb is to prepare. Some basic things that most people do not think of like are "opening
windows and doors downstairs and filling up pails and bath tubs with water" (Frank 97). Any water
after the bombs would become radiated. This means once one run out of water in the pails and tubs,
one will need to find a way to make the radiated water drinkable, or find an alternate source of
water. In Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon, this alternate source was the "artesian water" which "smelled
like rotten eggs" but was better than no water at all (Frank 151). Another alternate source of water is
wells and water tanks, no contaminated water or particles have a chance to get into the water so it is
safe to drink (Kearny 71). Water is an essential item that many people take for granted in normal

Purple is the Leader's Image; the leader wears this colour with a symbol of The Tool on it. The Tool

but Gaut's fits better for horror theme attractions.
Carroll believes that people who watch horror film do not so to feel scared or to feel disgusted, but
because people like the cognitive pleasure associated with watching horror films. Carroll believes
that people like to try to figure out monsters because they don't fit our conceptual scheme. Carroll
believes that a horror film is successful when the pleasure of figuring out the monster outweighs the
feelings of fear and disgust.
Carroll's theory doesn't really account for horror film where the person is human but he would argue
that a human behaving evilly or murdering other people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that people watching horror films share a similar experience to people riding a rollercoaster or

5 Weird Facts about Resident Evil and Milla Jovovich
One of the most popular video game franchises of all–time is Resident Evil. Not only this but there
have also been movies in the past, and all of them feature Milla Jovovich as the main character. Just
like anything else, this franchise also has some very weird facts behind it.
WEIRD FACT 1
The most interesting fact about Resident Evil is, the fact that that is not its real name. Instead, its
real name is actually BioHazard. Unfortunately, when the company was trying to release this name
they were receive copyright issues. It was then that the company held a contest to change the game's
name, and Resident Evil won.

The Play Developed By The Molasses Flood
The indie game scene has blossomed in recent years as the home console market has welcomed
small developers with open arms to self–publish their titles and reach a gaming audience and
community once inaccessible to them. Indie games and their developers often take risks with game
design, and express their ideas in fresh and creative ways. The Flame in the Flood, an indie title
developed by The Molasses Flood, is one of these titles as it places the player in the role of a young
woman who is accompanied by her dog as they travel down a treacherous river and scavenge for
food and other resources.
The world in which the game takes place has become flooded, and the player must navigate their
way down river to find shelter, resources, and valuables to stay alive. One could interpret the flame
in the title as a symbol of desire and willpower, meanwhile the flood is the constant struggle and
battle that one must face. The Flame in the Flood will not appeal to everyone as the game's
atmosphere and setting is of the gloomy and isolated variety, but those interested in the survival
genre will find a challenging game that has charm buried underneath its tough exterior.
If you are in need of a lengthy tutorial or gradual means of progress, you won't find that in The
Flame in the Flood. The game starts off by placing you in a dire situation as you scavenge for
resources in the opening area, and are then immediately pushed on your makeshift boat so that you
move towards other areas to

The Survival Horror Genre
The Survival Horror Genre
Out of all the genres in the video game industry, survival horror is an oddball in itself; and one near
and dear to my heart. It places emphasis on resource management and careful planning instead of
going gung–ho in a series of combat arenas. It encourages you to flee normal enemies instead of
fighting them because of a deliberately gimped control scheme and since the beasties you fought are
nastier and more aggressive than you... you get the idea. But of importance is how effortless it is at
building tension and scaring you until you're stiff as a statue. In an age of gaming that emphasized
shooting and beating up everything in the room until all the enemies are dead, Survival Horror
served and still serves as the

Similarities Between World War Z And World War Z
World War Z is an apocalyptic horror novel written by Max Brooks. Throughout the novel several
citizens of different disciplines such as; scientists, army, men, doctors, politicians, criminals, and
common individuals tell their story of survival. In addition to the stories, Max Brooks analyzes the
situation in the world after the war and describes its geopolitical, social, and economical
consequences. The film War World Z is based on the novel World War Z: An Oral History of the
Zombie War by Max Brooks. The film was released in 2013 with Marc Forster as the director. The
film stars Brad Pitt as the main character, Gerry Lane. The motion picture of World War Z depicts
fundamentally the same as qualities with a zombie pestilence that voyage globally contaminating
individuals, harming foundations, and threatening the presence of mankind. World War Z: An Oral
History of the Zombie War and World War Z the film does not have many similarities between the
two Medias, but still have small similarities. The plot is different and majority of the characters in
the film do not appear anywhere throughout the book.
The first difference between the two Medias would be the character development. In the apocalyptic
horror novel, Max Brooks wrote Word War Z to be in a pseudo–documentary manner on men and
women who have survived the zombie war. Each story was told in first person; however, some
injections and clarifications from the 'interviewer'–a UN investigator. All the stories told in

The Canadian Government Has Been Faced With A Decision
The Canadian Government has been faced with a decision that could destroy an already delicate
relationship with the Indigenous Canadians. There have been several pipeline expansion proposals
to increase the production and extraction of oil throughout Canada and the U.S. The primary factor
delaying the Canadian Government from starting these projects is the Indigenous people. With
promises by the newly elected federal Liberal government and the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms, it has outlined the importance of the Indigenous peoples' rights when it comes to natural
resource extraction that affects their land.
The best method that could lead to productive policy would be negotiation between the Canadian

There is controversy surrounding this topic. Donald Trump's political stance in Little Rock has
caused violent protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline, it would be in the best interest for the
Canadian Government to avoid a similar outcome. The Canadian Government must choose between
the relationship with Indigenous people and their rights or the profit that would lead from the
expansion of these pipelines. The three policies that will be outlined in this briefing will be; The
Canadian Government could move freely to approve the pipelines, without input or consideration of
Indigenous rights. They could negotiate with the Indigenous groups until both parties are satisfied.
Lastly, the Canadian Government could decline the proposals of the pipelines because in a cost–
benefit analysis the negative impacts of the pipelines, could outweigh financial gain. Option 1 One
of the policies the Canadian Government could pursue is to move forward and approve the pipeline
expansions regardless of the Indigenous peoples' perspective. These pipelines would connect the oil
sands in Alberta to markets globally which would lead to economic growth. With these pipelines
approved, it would mean greater exports. The Canadian economy would profit as it would create

Resident Evil 5 Representation
Resident Evil 5, which is known as Biohazard 5 in Japan, is a survival horror video game developed
and published by a digital company named Capcom (Snow, 2008: 1). The game was released on the
5th of March in 2009. The plot of Resident Evil revolves around characters named Chris Redfield–
the white middle aged male protagonist– and Sheva Alomar– the middle aged female character that
serves to support Chris (Snow, 2008: 1). It also revolves around their investigation of a terrorist
threat in Kijuju, which is a fictional region in Africa (Snow, 2008: 1). In this essay, the question of
how representation of the other embodies relations of power is explored using Resident Evil 5 and
using Stuart Hall's theories, namely, representation, binary oppositions, stereotypes and
naturalization to conclude how representation of the other carries relations of power. ... Show more

Representation is the act of portraying or depicting something (Merriam–Webster's Online
Dictionary 2014)). According to Stuart Hall, it means using language to say something meaningful
about, or to present for the second time, the world meaningfully to the other people (Hall, 1997:
259). Hall further states that there is a fixed connection between power–which he defines as the
ability to control people or things, that can radiate from both dominant and the dominated (Hall,
1997: 261)–and representation. In conclusion, Hall's idea is that in the context of representation, the
circularity of power is critical. In Resident Evil 5, a number of things such as the African continent
and the people living in it are represented as the other from the 'normal' western society, which
embodies relations of power in a sense that the power radiates from the 'normal' western society
towards the subordinate other, which in this context is the African continent and its people. When

Growing up, we never learnt much about indigenous history, schools would teach us about Henry

were misrepresentations, both vastly exaggerated and stereotyped.
I often wondered, is there a way that I could make a difference in the world?
If I could follow my father's footsteps, how could it be done?
One day, my father told me that television is a medium that Australians can learn to understand the

Call Of The Wild As A Zeitgeist Analysis
The Call of the Zeitgeist
Jack London's The Call of the Wild is a novel written during the literary era of Naturalism. It is
about a pampered dog, Buck, who was thrown into the Alaskan wilderness and becomes part of a
team of sled dogs. Eventually, he becomes the leader of a wolf pack. Naturalism takes place during
a time in America known as the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, the ideas of Social Darwinism
take hold. Social Darwinism is "a term scholars use to describe the practice of misapplying the
biological evolutionary language of Charles Darwin to politics, the economy, and society" ("Social
Darwinism in the Gilded Age"). But how is London's novel a zeitgeist of Naturalism? Jack London's
The Call of the Wild is a zeitgeist of Naturalism with its usage of Atavism, and a key ideology of
Social Darwinism, which is the survival of the fittest.
As mentioned before, London's novel is about Buck, who lives a comfortable life on a Californian
estate. However, Buck gets kidnapped by a gardener, so that he could pay off his gambling debts,
and sold to Alaskan sled drivers. When he arrives in Alaska, a friend he made on the trip over, is
killed horrifically when she attempts to befriend a dog who attacks her. Another dog, Spitz, laughs
at her death and develops a rivalry with him. Over the course of the novel he starts to subvert Spitz's
command and ultimately fights him, winning and becoming the leader of his sled team. However,
the sled team gets new drivers by inexperienced people joining the search for gold. Their
inexperience causes some dogs to die from exhaustion. On one trail, a man, John Thornton, tells the
drivers that the ice is dangerous because it is too thin. They refused to listen to him, but Buck was
too tired to move, causing one of the drivers to start clubbing him. Despite Buck's beatings, he
refused to get up, resulting in Thornton stepping in and taking him, saving him from death. A new
dog is put in place as leader and they move on the trail, but they fall through the ice and into the
frigid river where they presumably die. Under Thornton's ownership, Buck has nothing much to do,
save for small tasks, as Thornton is busy prospecting for gold. It is during this time that "call of the

Indigenous People In Canada
Canada
as a nation is known to the world for being loving, courteous, and typically very welcoming
of all ethnicities. Nevertheless, the treatment of Canada's Indigenous population over the past
decades, appears to suggest otherwise. Indigenous people have been tormented and oppressed by the
Canadian society for hundreds of years and remain to live under discrimination resulting in cultural
brutality. This, and more, has caused severe negative cultural consequences, psychological and
sociological effects. The history of the seclusion of Indigenous people has played a prominent
aspect in the development and impact of how Indigenous people are treated and perceived in today's
society. Unfortunately, our history with respect to the treatment of Indigenous communities is not
something in which we should take pride in. The Indian Act of 1876 is an excellent model of how
the behavior of racial and cultural superiority attributed to the destruction of Indigenous culture and
beliefs. The Indian Act established by the Canadian government is a policy of Aboriginal
assimilation which compels Indigenous parents under threat of prosecution to integrate their
children into Residential Schools. As a nation, we are reminded by past actions that has prompted
the weakening of the identity of Indigenous peoples. Residential schools has also contributed to the
annihilation of Indigenous culture which was to kill the Indian in the child by isolating them from

Miss Caroline?s First Day Essay
Miss Caroline's First Day
It was the first day of school for many in Maycomb, including myself. I had just moved from a
college in Winston Country. Almost 30 years have past since that day in Maycomb when I first saw
the school I was to be teaching at. The classroom smelt stale after being closed up for the whole
summer, as I met my students who I would teach for the next year. The one child I remember most
had a trail of dirty footprints leading to his desk. The little horror looked like he was straight from
the pig pen.
After a hectic morning, the children were coming inside from the playground. The filthy child I
noticed in the morning, walked past. He smelled of farmyard animals. I can still recall his stench
now some 30 years on. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

As I got my nerve back I asked the boy who he was. He introduced himself as Burris Ewell. He

medical book to find how to get rid of cooties, before suggesting that he was to go home and wash
his hair. Burris didn't like my suggestion that the other students might catch them. He stood up and
glared at me. Only then I saw how dirty he really was. He was in dire need for a bath. There was no
way he was coming into my classroom again like that.
"Burris, please bath yourself before you come back tomorrow," I said. The foul little thing laughed
at me. He spoke in an uncouth manner,
"You ain't sendin' me home. I was about to of leave – I done my time for the year." I had no idea
what he was talking about. He spoke as if he had done time in prison for a committed crime.
"He is one of the Ewell's, ma'am," a child told me. This explanation was the second of its kind I had
received that day. I hadn't been in Maycomb for long and I didn't know the ethics of a small town. I
listened on to see what the child had to say. Education doesn't appear to be one of the Ewell family's
principles. It seemed that the children attend the school for the first day of each school year just to
satisfy the law.

Social Issues In George A Romero's Day Of The Dead
George A. Romero's Day of the Dead is a part of the trilogy while still being a perfect example of
the social issues during the eighties. It was the Reagan era and therefore most horror filmmakers at
the time were dealing with oppressive nature. Romero successfully portrays the social issues in his
movies of the respective times of their releases. He shows the domestic racism and the Vietnam War
in the movie Night of the Living Dead (1968), he also comments on the society's obsessions with
consumerism in the seventies with his movie Dawn of the Dead (1978). The movie is not different
when it comes to criticizing the social issues. The Day of the Dead concentrates on societal concerns
and humanity in general, although Romero's main fight is amount of power and control given to
military and judging if this is a good idea. This film is regarded as one of the most political zombie
movie. Day of the Dead is the most gore cinema when compared to the previous two in the trilogy
saga, but the humor is mild in this film compared to others. The audience also witness the evolution
of zombies. The film is a direct address to the nature of human emotions and prejudices that tear the
society apart.
The movie is set in one location much like Night of the Living Dead. The zombies continue to live
and have now overtaken the population of human beings. Fragments of the government and its
military remain, forced into hiding in fortified bunkers with scientists trying to find a cure. In Fort

For how many years has man asked the question, "what three items would you bring with you if you

As previously stated the purification of this water is absolutely necessary for human survival. Now
there is more than one way that the water could be purified, but this is the simplest way to do it with
the least amount of materials. Now another thing that the skillet could be used for would be as a
weapon, to possibly immobilize a pig or other creature. The skillet could be taken in one hand, and
then the motion of beating the pig over the head could be used repeatedly, until the pig was either
dead or unconscious. Then if the pig was not dead the beating motion could be continued with this
or other weapons until it is sure that he is dead. A good sign to make sure he's dead is when there is
no heart beat, as well as severe infractions or fissures in his head. Then all that would be left would
be to cut the pigs head off and roast it over the fire like the beast it is. The skillet could also be used
in assistance of building a shelter. The skillet could be used as a weight. The rope could be tied to
the handle securely, then the skillet could be thrust upward over a tree branch in order to secure the
shelter to a tree, which would make it much more secure in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Also if necessary, the entire shelter could be built in the tree. In that case the skillet could be used
again to thrust into the tree with the rope, but it could be used this time in order to climb up and then

The Injustice Of Indigenous Offenders Essay
The Injustice of Indigenous Offenders Throughout the history of Canada, we have acknowledged
Indigenous cultures as being the first people of Canadian land. However, society has not treated
them as equal members of society since the first explorers settled. The Euro–Canadian culture has
impacted the Indigenous people negatively; as a result injustice between the two cultures has
developed and inequality has widened as the two cultures interact more frequently. Lisa Monchalin
(2016), author of the text The Colonial Problem: An Indigenous Perspective on Crime and Injustice
in Canada, noted multiple reasons how Aboriginal people are discriminated against in society, and
how they are over–represented in Canadian correctional system. In society, according to Aylsworth,
L., and Trovato, F. (2012) of The Canadian Encyclopedia, the indigenous population was
approximately 4.3% of the total Canadian population, yet, the 2015–2016 Annual Report of the
Office of the Correctional Investigator noted "an unabated increase in the number of Indigenous
people behind bars, a rate now surpassing 25% of the total federal incarcerated population" (2016,
n.p.). This raised the question as to why there was such a blatant over–representation of Indigenous
people in the criminal justice system. Indigenous history has been speckled with injustices,
hardship, discrimination, racism, and have been on the receiving end of multiple attempts to rid
Canada of Indigenous ways and people. The history of these

Camping Tent Disadvantages
The availability of secure campsites close to major cities is increasingly attracting families wishing
to take a camping tent vacation without heading out to the jungle. For someone who has never been
out camping, the toughest question is where to experience their first camping tent trip. Starting off
in low risk well supplied areas not too far from home is usually the safest option. Increasing
gasoline and airlines charges are squeezing families struggling to make it through the tough
economic times and forcing them to embrace camping tent alternatives. With high quality family
tents retailing at under $200, a whole family of up to 6 people can enjoy a camping tent extended
weekend for under $100 close to urban centers. What are some of things a first time camper needs to
know in choosing their first tent?
Type and Size
With many types of tents available, choosing the right one can be mind boggling. If you are looking
for a tent to use for many years and do not plan on going camping in winter, then a three season tent
is all you need. Dome family tents are preferable because they have more space and headroom.
When it comes to deciding the size, if you are not going backpacking in the wilderness where the
weight of the tent is a major consideration, always go for a tent that will take more people than the
quoted size. Manufacturers usually overstate the amount of people that can comfortably sleep in a
tent. The rule of thumb is to select a tent that will sleep 1–2 people

the most strength in the mind, and he uses both of his attributes and he survives. For example, Ralph

everyone and elect a chief, in which Ralph is named chief. Ralph understands the situation, and he
needs all the other boys to understand, so he says, "I've got to have time to think things out. I can't

Theme Of Two Old Women
Major Themes in Two Old Women
Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival is an Inuit legend, or a

Two Old Women teaches us that betrayal is an act that can lead to great distrust, and is one that can
be tough to forgive.
The next theme found in this legend is the theme of courage. Courage is having a state of mind in
which a person is able to face struggles with confidence, and without fear. After being left in the
cold winter, the women must be very strong and courageous in order to survive. For example, Sa'
announces, "'They think that we are too old and useless. They forget that we, too, have earned the
right to live! So I say if we are going to die, my friend, let us die trying, not sitting'"(16). This quote
demonstrates the theme of courage because it shows that the two old women are determined to live
and survive, and they will not take pity on themselves. Instead, they choose to prove The People
wrong, and will "die trying, not sitting". Another example of courage found in Two Old Women is
when Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' build each other up in times of loneliness and fear, the first point in the
story when the two main characters really connect to each other. For example, the text states,
"Though food was scarce, warmth was their main concern, and at night they would sit and talk,
trying to keep each other from the loneliness and fears that threatened to overcome them...They
talked. And a sense of mutual respect developed as each

Our Zombies Ourselves Summary

  • 1. Our Zombies Ourselves Summary Comparative Analysis of "Vampires Never Die" and "Our Zombies, Ourselves" In "vampires never die" Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan use technology advancement to explain the creation of vampires, also using mixed vocabulary and expressions to explain a more serious tone. On the other hand, James Parker uses the development of the modern zombie to explain the stereotype of these creatures in his article "Our Zombies, Ourselves," while using more playful expressions to show his tone. These three authors seem to have the same concepts while writing about these monsters, but still disagreeing on some points. While there are some key differences in these two articles, they are similar in many ways also. All three authors agree and disagree on several points, such as they both appeal to more intellectual audiences, and they both write about conformity with the want to fit in, while disagreeing on what they use to explain their monster's general idea. Firstly, the authors all aim for a more intellectual audience that find horror stories entertaining. These articles were written for The New York Times and The Atlantic Monthly, which are both papers for very intelligent people. The New York Times and The Atlantic Monthly are both known for being very complex reads, so people must be very intelligent to understand them. Authors Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan use high vocabulary words such as "enthrone," "pandemic," and "archetypal" to show the difficulty of this reading. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay about Stephen King and Horror Films As the main topic suggests, what are the types of horrors associated with media? First off, you might want to think about what your definition of fear is, what unsettles you, and what rubs you the wrong way. Well according to Stephen King, this can be broken down into three types; which is the gross–out, horror, and terror. The gross–out in this case is what it is. It's things we as humans find disgusting, morbid, or diseased. To provide an example; picture yourself waking up in your bed, all seems normal right? You then look around and notice a severed torso sitting on your computer chair. Morbid right? Onto the next type which is horror. Stephen King places the supernatural under this category; it's creatures or unnatural happenings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A good example of psychological horror in video game form would be Silent Hill 2; which focuses on the main protagonist emotional and mental stability. Silent Hill 2 which was produced by Team Silent focuses on our main protagonist James Sunderland as he ventures into the mysterious town named "Silent Hill" to meet his wife at their special place after receiving a letter from.; the thing is though is that his wife has been dead for quite few years now. Questioning his sanity own sanity, he still sought out the reason to why he had received the letter. From the beginning it's rather evident that James is not in the right state of mind and becomes steadily unreliable, to the point where his sanity is questioned. This becomes more apparent as the story continues when the letter he received from his deceased wife slowly disappears. To back this claim of James not being as sane as he appears, let's take into account the monsters he has killed throughout the game. They emit very human like screams. Mixing this in with our main protagonists falling mental health, can we assume this isn't some elaborate mental breakdown formed by James? Can we just assume the monsters he's killed so far actually real... or are they actually real people? This is what we generally define as psychological horror. The ambiguity that clouds the characters, their mental state as the driving point for the narrative, the dark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Popular Culture: The Slender Man Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few you've probably heard about the stories about a creature known as The Slender Man. He looks like a man, but he's very tall, some say up to 8ft tall, with elongated, stick thin arms and legs. Some art depicts him with black tentacles that protrude from his back which he can retract at will. His face is blank and featureless, almost although it is covered by a thin veil and he's always wearing a black or pinstripe suit with coattails and sometimes a bowler or top hat. He appears to float around rather than walk, which suggests the possibility of him being an ethereal being rather than a creature or a man, and it's said that he can materialize in any place. According to the stories he lives in the woods and stalks children, although what his motives are remain a mystery. The elusive Slender Man might not be real but his influence on popular culture can't be ignored – he's an extremely popular figure especially with children and impressionable teenagers. But where does he come from? Here are 15 creepy facts about Slender Man that you might not want to read right before bedtime... 15 We Don't Know What Happens To His Victims Very few stories about Slender Man end with graphic ... He also drew inspiration from the character known as the Tall Man in the 1979 movie Phantasm, survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil and the literary work of H.P Lovecraft and William S. • 4. Darwinism : The Time Machine Keisha Washington Dr. Prince ENG 2320 November 25, 2014 Darwinism: The Time Machine Darwinism is a theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin also called Darwinian Theory. Darwin utilizes Thomas Malthus' principle of exponential population growth to debate the possibility of infinite growth of population sizes which is tested by the limitations of geography and natural resources that makes it impossible for an infinite number of beings to survive. The limitation in resources results in species experience a "struggle for existence," creating a survival competition. In this theory, Darwin stated that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual 's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859 which argued that species evolved to get better all the time. Some people used his theory to argue that members of the elite or height of the social ladder were superior to the working class and impoverished due Darwin 's "survival of the fittest", which is considered Social Darwinism. In one of the earliest examples of science fiction, The Time Machine, H.G. Wells' introduces Social Darwinism along with the theory of evolution. In 1895 H.G. Wells' The Time Machine was published and dealt with the issues that were prevalent during 1890s Britain, such as social inequality, which similarly affects society today. • 5. The Importance Of Camping With Small Children Many people think taking a toddler camping is just asking for stress, headaches and complications. Actually, your toddler can learn a lot at a young age from a trip into nature. Camping with small children can be an entertaining experience while giving them the basic skills of life. –Surroundings For toddlers, life is one huge learning experience. The simplest, most basic functions of the natural world are fascinating and eye–opening to them. Camping provides the opportunity to teach your toddlers about nature and observing their surroundings. While sitting around the campsite, imagine your toddler spotting a leaf falling from a tree and the fascination in their eyes as it slowly floats to the ground. This is an opportunity to teach them about the different trees, leaves, plants and shrubs that surround them. –Basic Survival Skills Children are never too young to begin learning basic survival skills. Here 's one that can be taught in the form of a game. Bring some marbles in a bag that the toddler can carry. Other items can be used as well, but stick with non–edible ones for this lesson, or one of mother nature 's little creatures may just eat your lesson materials. Start at the edge of your campsite and choose a path into the woods that is easy enough for them to walk with you. Have your toddler place marbles on the ground every couple of feet to leave a trail to follow back to your site. Dropping and re–discovering the marbles will not only be a fun game, but will give ... • 7. My Favorite Story Moment I'm pretty lucky, my favorite story moment happens immediately. The story starts with a child Oliver and a woman in her early 30s Emmeline I think they are the most important characters to the story, because their actions set up why the story is happing, and why it is episodic. The fear felt by first Emmeline and then by Oliver helps reinforce the horror the show has and will convey. The aesthetic choices were the dark stage which sets up the horror theme of the performance. The gothic clothing, which brings a specific period of time to mind, Victorian I think. And the sounds such as the chorus announcing the "curse", the heavy beats and lighting in the background, which also helps set the horror feel of the performance. This performance reinforces the idea that you do not need much to have a powerful performance. There were two people, a box, and door. This important scene did not need a ton of props, a lot of space, or a full cast, just us the audience and them the performers. The way the actors spoke, their accents help me to be transported to the scene. The space between the box and the exit is also important to me. All it took to avoid the "curse" was a few steps. I think the thing that made this story work was the passion, excitement and cohesion of the troop. The entire story 4 different "episodes happen in the same space with nothing but minimal pros to transport us the audience to this world. I think one way to make the performance more effective would have been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the people in the town Boo looks very scary. He has a big scar on his face. Also they believe he is six and a half feet tall. He has blood stained hands because he kills animals and eats them. Boo has a bad reputation, he was in a gang. People say that he killed his dad by stabbed him with a scissors. Also he only goes out at night, and he looks into windows and stocks people. Another reason why they will not meet Boo is because he is locked in the house. The whole Radley family is very odd. • 9. William Golding 's The Lord Of The Flies Is it better for someone to die for what they believe in, or is it better for someone to live and give up their believes? In novels, films, and even in real life, there are martyrs, those who are killed for what they think, and there are those who alter their morals to fit the status quo. These two types of people can be further characterized into two groups: those who do not change are weak, and those who do change are strong. Charles Darwin established a theory that states how what makes a person strong or weak is how they decide to deal with change. The naturalist states that even though some are vastly intelligent, kind, or dignified, they end up dying first because lack of adaptability, or refusal to do so. In William Golding's The Lord of the Flies, Simon is an example of the sort of weakness Darwin elaborates on in his theory. While he is the most wise out of the group and tries to help the boys as much as he can, Simon is the first main character to die because he is unable to keep up with the boys in both a physical and mental sense. Simon's untimely death was caused by his refusal to abandon his civilized morals in order to abide by the principles of social darwinism in the ways of the other boys. Simon stands out from the rest of the group because he does not kill and engage in physical combat with the other boys, and his death is caused by his dismission of such violent activity. Shortly after the boys arrive on the island, the majority of them, including Jack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of The Movie The Martian Throughout the movie, "The Martian," the story revolves around the main character, Mark Watney, who has to survive alone on a Mars by utilizing his skills in botany, as well as other subjects. Mark faces multiple problems throughout the movie, that make his survival extremly hard. Other than botany, there were many other sciences used by Watney to survive on Mars. , including physics. An example of this is when making a battery last longer on the rover, he removes the battery in order to make the rover lighter, and he removed weight from the shuttle that was used to escape the planet. Watney uses medical science (when he had to remove the piece of shrapnel and staple his wound. Other problems included the lack of food, having the HAB (the headquarters for the mission), and having to travel a large distance in a rover that was meant to only go a short distance. The first problem he faced was not having enough food to survive until he could be rescued. Luckily, he had a large amount of food for the crew that was left in the HAB. He calculates how long he could make the rations last but comes to the conclusion that he will still not have enough food to last him until the next manned mission to Mars. Mark rationalizes that through his botany skills he might be able to grow food inside the HAB; he settles on potatoes. . He then uses his human waste, mixed with water and Martian soil, to make soil suitable for growing potatoes. The next step of growing potatoes was finding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Alanis Obomsawin is a Canadian film maker who is well known for directing numerous documentaries on the plights of the Indigenous people. Alanis Obomsawin was born August 31, 1932 outside of Lebanon in New Hampshire but raised in Quebec. Obomsawin is a member of the Abenaki Nation but left there when she was just a baby "returned with her family to the Odanak reserve near Sorel, Québec, at the age of six months. Her father was a guide and a medicine maker, and her mother ran a boarding house." (historica) Alanis lived happily on the reserve "She recalls those times as beautiful because of the colors of the brilliant ash wood splints used in making baskets, the smell of the sweet grass in everyone 's homes, and the fond memories of beloved relatives." (collections) until the age of 9 when her parents decided it was time to move and packed the family up and moved to Trois–Rivières, located only 48 kilometres from their Reserve. • 12. Historic Treaties And Its Effects On The Peoples Of This... INSERT SOMETHING ABOUT SOCIOLOGY PAPER. Historic treaties continue to be relevant in Canada today because ever since Christopher Columbus arrived to an undiscovered continent, he managed to employ detrimental consequences to the peoples of this land. The treaty was one of the colonial processes that would allow for the exploitation of the First Nations. Many Aboriginal Signatories to treaties understood the treaty agreements as being the foundation of a relationship with the Crown and that this relationship would be based on co–existence versus the crown, creating them as a surrendering of the land with only small reserve retained, and limited hunting in those territories. These treaties are important today because they try to go about who has land–claim to a certain area and they show that some treaties were compiled by the British with the poorer intentions of the Aboriginals. However, the documents and treaties that the British drafted and passed, would create a paper–trail of vast amounts of exploitation. Treaties show prevalence today because they can demonstrate how convoluted the history of Canada's relationships with the Aboriginal peoples is. One factor that makes this history perplexing is trying to fathom who has claim to the lands that people stand on. Moreover, when the government was willing to substantiate what scheme they wanted to employ in order to solve the issue of cohabitation of the aboriginal peoples. Some people think this movie is a Christmas movie, but, I'm going to prove them wrong. People think it's a Christmas movie because they try to make Christmas in Halloween Town. Well, to me, Christmas is a time of joy and not scary things, like they have in a Halloween Town Christmas. For example, the sleigh is a coffin, the reindeer are just skeletons, the toys are shrunken heads and hats made from bats (etc),and the cops are called in Christmas Town. This is why people think it's a Christmas movie; but it's not really. This essay has shown you why The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie instead of a Christmas movie. Raspberry Hill experiences this with other characters and it helps to show how much friendships and money are really valued. Therefore, Zora supports the theme with the situation that her and Raspberry were put in. When Zora and her father invited Raspberry to lunch, Raspberry digged in Zora's purse and stole a large sum of cash. Later at lunch, Zoras father gave both girls eighty dollars each for their field trip. After this happened Raspberry felt really bad and was too embarrassed to give the money back. Henceforth, her friendship with Zora became troubled when she found out. On pg. 47, Sharon G Flake wrote how Raspberry narrates the issue. "Zora hasn't mentioned the money, but she doesn't treat me the same anymore. At lunchtime, she sits at another table. Suddenly, a soft resonating moan starts to fill the empty air of the bedroom. Looking out the window, the world is an eerie grey with nothing moving but the occasional garbage blowing in the wind. Suddenly the horizon begins to change as a crowd of people begin to emerge. Watching nervously, the figures get closer and turn into something much more menacing. Today, the new movie "Zombieland" has just been released into theaters so the zombie is still going strongly through culture. Spoofs like 'Shawn of the Dead' and 'Zombieland' "has fun messing around with the rules of the post–apocalyptic zombie movie genre" (Machosky). However the reason the undead have survived so long is because they have broadened their publicity range. Not only does the world see zombies in movies, but mankind must "watch out for Nazi zombies rising from the grave in videos games like 'Dead Snow' and 'Call of Duty: World at War'" (Greene). Zombies have been expanded into music as well with the Kingston Trio's release of the song "Zombie Jamboree". Even books have been used to spread the disease, such as "at Borders zombie literature runs the gambit from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Zombie Haiku" (Greene). In addition, David Lubar has just recently expanded the zombie craze to elementary school children with his newest novel, My Rotten Life (Lauer– Williams). The Play Developed By The Molasses Flood The indie game scene has blossomed in recent years as the home console market has welcomed small developers with open arms to self–publish their titles and reach a gaming audience and community once inaccessible to them. Indie games and their developers often take risks with game design, and express their ideas in fresh and creative ways. The Flame in the Flood, an indie title developed by The Molasses Flood, is one of these titles as it places the player in the role of a young woman who is accompanied by her dog as they travel down a treacherous river and scavenge for food and other resources. The world in which the game takes place has become flooded, and the player must navigate their way down river to find shelter, resources, and valuables to stay alive. According to Stuart Hall, it means using language to say something meaningful about, or to present for the second time, the world meaningfully to the other people (Hall, 1997: 259). Hall further states that there is a fixed connection between power–which he defines as the ability to control people or things, that can radiate from both dominant and the dominated (Hall, 1997: 261)–and representation. In conclusion, Hall's idea is that in the context of representation, the circularity of power is critical. In Resident Evil 5, a number of things such as the African continent and the people living in it are represented as the other from the 'normal' western society, which embodies relations of power in a sense that the power radiates from the 'normal' western society towards the subordinate other, which in this context is the African continent and its people. It is about a pampered dog, Buck, who was thrown into the Alaskan wilderness and becomes part of a team of sled dogs. Eventually, he becomes the leader of a wolf pack. Naturalism takes place during a time in America known as the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, the ideas of Social Darwinism take hold. Social Darwinism is "a term scholars use to describe the practice of misapplying the biological evolutionary language of Charles Darwin to politics, the economy, and society" ("Social Darwinism in the Gilded Age"). But how is London's novel a zeitgeist of Naturalism? Jack London's The Call of the Wild is a zeitgeist of Naturalism with its usage of Atavism, and a key ideology of Social Darwinism, which is the survival of the fittest. As mentioned before, London's novel is about Buck, who lives a comfortable life on a Californian estate. However, Buck gets kidnapped by a gardener, so that he could pay off his gambling debts, and sold to Alaskan sled drivers. When he arrives in Alaska, a friend he made on the trip over, is killed horrifically when she attempts to befriend a dog who attacks her. Another dog, Spitz, laughs at her death and develops a rivalry with him. Over the course of the novel he starts to subvert Spitz's command and ultimately fights him, winning and becoming the leader of his sled team. However, the sled team gets new drivers by inexperienced people joining the search for gold. Their inexperience causes some dogs to die from exhaustion. On one trail, a man, John Thornton, tells the drivers that the ice is dangerous because it is too thin. They refused to listen to him, but Buck was too tired to move, causing one of the drivers to start clubbing him. Despite Buck's beatings, he refused to get up, resulting in Thornton stepping in and taking him, saving him from death. A new dog is put in place as leader and they move on the trail, but they fall through the ice and into the frigid river where they presumably die. Nevertheless, the treatment of Canada's Indigenous population over the past decades, appears to suggest otherwise. Indigenous people have been tormented and oppressed by the Canadian society for hundreds of years and remain to live under discrimination resulting in cultural brutality. This, and more, has caused severe negative cultural consequences, psychological and sociological effects. The history of the seclusion of Indigenous people has played a prominent aspect in the development and impact of how Indigenous people are treated and perceived in today's society. The one child I remember most had a trail of dirty footprints leading to his desk. The little horror looked like he was straight from the pig pen. After a hectic morning, the children were coming inside from the playground. The filthy child I noticed in the morning, walked past. He smelled of farmyard animals. I can still recall his stench now some 30 years on. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The filthy child rummaged around in his grubby hair to find the insect, it was a repulsive site. As I got my nerve back I asked the boy who he was. He introduced himself as Burris Ewell. He wasn't too bright. I asked him how to spell his name. But the imbecile couldn't. I looked up my medical book to find how to get rid of cooties, before suggesting that he was to go home and wash his hair. Burris didn't like my suggestion that the other students might catch them. He stood up and glared at me. Only then I saw how dirty he really was. He was in dire need for a bath. There was no way he was coming into my classroom again like that. "Burris, please bath yourself before you come back tomorrow," I said. The foul little thing laughed at me. He spoke in an uncouth manner, "You ain't sendin' me home. I was about to of leave – I done my time for the year." I had no idea what he was talking about. He spoke as if he had done time in prison for a committed crime. "He is one of the Ewell's, ma'am," a child told me. This explanation was the second of its kind I had received that day. I hadn't been in Maycomb for long and I didn't know the ethics of a small town. I listened on to see what the child had to say. Education doesn't appear to be one of the Ewell family's principles. It seemed that the children attend the school for the first day of each school year just to satisfy the law. "My third year in first grade this year, I reckon I'll be smart enough for second next year." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Social Issues In George A Romero's Day Of The Dead George A. Romero's Day of the Dead is a part of the trilogy while still being a perfect example of the social issues during the eighties. It was the Reagan era and therefore most horror filmmakers at the time were dealing with oppressive nature. Romero successfully portrays the social issues in his movies of the respective times of their releases. He shows the domestic racism and the Vietnam War in the movie Night of the Living Dead (1968), he also comments on the society's obsessions with consumerism in the seventies with his movie Dawn of the Dead (1978). The movie is not different when it comes to criticizing the social issues. The Day of the Dead concentrates on societal concerns and humanity in general, although Romero's main fight is amount of power and control given to military and judging if this is a good idea. This film is regarded as one of the most political zombie movie. Day of the Dead is the most gore cinema when compared to the previous two in the trilogy saga, but the humor is mild in this film compared to others. The audience also witness the evolution of zombies. The film is a direct address to the nature of human emotions and prejudices that tear the society apart. The movie is set in one location much like Night of the Living Dead. The zombies continue to live and have now overtaken the population of human beings. As previously stated the purification of this water is absolutely necessary for human survival. Now there is more than one way that the water could be purified, but this is the simplest way to do it with the least amount of materials. Now another thing that the skillet could be used for would be as a weapon, to possibly immobilize a pig or other creature. The skillet could be taken in one hand, and then the motion of beating the pig over the head could be used repeatedly, until the pig was either dead or unconscious. Then if the pig was not dead the beating motion could be continued with this or other weapons until it is sure that he is dead. A good sign to make sure he's dead is when there is no heart beat, as well as severe infractions or fissures in his head. Then all that would be left would be to cut the pigs head off and roast it over the fire like the beast it is. The skillet could also be used in assistance of building a shelter. The skillet could be used as a weight. The rope could be tied to the handle securely, then the skillet could be thrust upward over a tree branch in order to secure the shelter to a tree, which would make it much more secure in the event of adverse weather conditions. Also if necessary, the entire shelter could be built in the tree. In that case the skillet could be used again to thrust into the tree with the rope, but it could be used this time in order to climb up and then build from there using the rope and ... • 36. The Injustice Of Indigenous Offenders Essay The Injustice of Indigenous Offenders Throughout the history of Canada, we have acknowledged Indigenous cultures as being the first people of Canadian land. However, society has not treated them as equal members of society since the first explorers settled. The Euro–Canadian culture has impacted the Indigenous people negatively; as a result injustice between the two cultures has developed and inequality has widened as the two cultures interact more frequently. Lisa Monchalin (2016), author of the text The Colonial Problem: An Indigenous Perspective on Crime and Injustice in Canada, noted multiple reasons how Aboriginal people are discriminated against in society, and how they are over–represented in Canadian correctional system. In society, according to Aylsworth, L., and Trovato, F. (2012) of The Canadian Encyclopedia, the indigenous population was approximately 4.3% of the total Canadian population, yet, the 2015–2016 Annual Report of the Office of the Correctional Investigator noted "an unabated increase in the number of Indigenous people behind bars, a rate now surpassing 25% of the total federal incarcerated population" (2016, n.p.). This raised the question as to why there was such a blatant over–representation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system. Indigenous history has been speckled with injustices, hardship, discrimination, racism, and have been on the receiving end of multiple attempts to rid Canada of Indigenous ways and people. The history of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Camping Tent Disadvantages The availability of secure campsites close to major cities is increasingly attracting families wishing to take a camping tent vacation without heading out to the jungle. For someone who has never been out camping, the toughest question is where to experience their first camping tent trip. Starting off in low risk well supplied areas not too far from home is usually the safest option. Increasing gasoline and airlines charges are squeezing families struggling to make it through the tough economic times and forcing them to embrace camping tent alternatives. With high quality family tents retailing at under $200, a whole family of up to 6 people can enjoy a camping tent extended weekend for under $100 close to urban centers. What are some of things a first time camper needs to know in choosing their first tent? Type and Size With many types of tents available, choosing the right one can be mind boggling. If you are looking for a tent to use for many years and do not plan on going camping in winter, then a three season tent is all you need. Dome family tents are preferable because they have more space and headroom. When it comes to deciding the size, if you are not going backpacking in the wilderness where the weight of the tent is a major consideration, always go for a tent that will take more people than the quoted size. Manufacturers usually overstate the amount of people that can comfortably sleep in a tent. The rule of thumb is to select a tent that will sleep 1–2 people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Lord of the Flies: Natural Selection and its Finest Charles Darwin was a famous scientist whose most famous studies were the evolution of man and all other creatures. Darwin realized that certain species became extinct because they were not both strong physically and mentally, and he explains his theory which is called natural selection, and later claimed the phrase "Survival of the fittest." This phrase can be seen through war as well as the aftermath of a war. World War II proved that the strongest bodies and minds survived, and in England the strongest had to stay strong for more than a decade after the war because they had to rebuild everything, including the way society acts. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph has the mental toughness as well as good physical status to survive the island. Sara Constankakis describes Ralph as, "The protagonist of the novel. He struggles with leadership, but he always keeps a positive message. Ralph is smart, for he knows what to do, and he always listens to Piggy even though he betrays him and is not a friend of his." Ralph is the boy with the most strength in the mind, and he uses both of his attributes and he survives. For example, Ralph knows what to do when he finds Piggy after the crash. He gathers all the boys up and they meet everyone and elect a chief, in which Ralph is named chief. Ralph understands the situation, and he needs all the other boys to understand, so he says, "I've got to have time to think things out. I can't decide what to do straight off" (23). Ralph wants the boys to know that all decisions will take some time, just like all political actions. Ralph needs to make sure he knows that he makes the best choice and that the choice benefits all of the boys more than it would hurt them. To continue, another reason why Ralph has the strongest mind is that he cares for everyone, including the littluns. He wants to make sure that the littluns feel safe and protected. Theme Of Two Old Women Major Themes in Two Old Women Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival is an Inuit legend, or a story that has been passed down through many generations by word of mouth, and has been popularly accepted as true. In this tale, two elderly women named Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' are left behind by their tribe due to a brutal winter famine, but are determined to survive to prove their capability and resourcefulness to themselves and their People. Over the course of about a year, Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' use their hunting and survival skills, as well as determination and courage, to withstand nature. Two Old Women teaches us that betrayal is an act that can lead to great distrust, and is one that can be tough to forgive. The next theme found in this legend is the theme of courage. Courage is having a state of mind in which a person is able to face struggles with confidence, and without fear. After being left in the cold winter, the women must be very strong and courageous in order to survive. For example, Sa' announces, "'They think that we are too old and useless. They forget that we, too, have earned the right to live! So I say if we are going to die, my friend, let us die trying, not sitting'"(16). This quote demonstrates the theme of courage because it shows that the two old women are determined to live and survive, and they will not take pity on themselves. Instead, they choose to prove The People wrong, and will "die trying, not sitting". Another example of courage found in Two Old Women is when Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' build each other up in times of loneliness and fear, the first point in the story when the two main characters really connect to each other. For example, the text states, "Though food was scarce, warmth was their main concern, and at night they would sit and talk, trying to keep each other from the loneliness and fears that threatened to overcome them...They talked.
