1. Marking and measuring out the body of the animal
23/3/11 (Wednesday the 23th of March)
What I did today
Today in DT class we finally started our moving toy project. My design was a rolling dog, with a
push stick on the top for pushing. When we went in, we saw Mr.Anderson showing us the
different wood that he had, which was pine and hard wood. He showed us the wheel making
machine, which was just a drill bit that is attached to the pedestal drill to cut it out. For my
project I’ll be using hard wood for the body and the wheels, and pine for the push stick. My
design had a measurement of 180mm x 110mm x 100mm. The piece of wood that I had needed
to be cut to my measurements, but before that I marked out my design on the wood with a
pencil. I first used a tri-square to mark out the size of the
dog, with my measurements as a guide. When I marked it
out, I realized that it was small so I checked with
Mr.Anderson if it was right. Once it was cleared, I drew
my design on the wood. I took about the whole class time
to draw my design.
This is a picture of my drawing my design on the hard
wood. I used a pencil to draw it.
This is a picture of me marking the measurements for my
design. I used a pencil, tri-square, and a steel ruler for
this.
Why:
I took a long time to draw my design because I had to use up most of the space that was given,
but it was small when I drew it. I had a hard time drawing it, due to the design and I wasn’t used
to drawing on hard wood.

Emotions:
I don’t think today was a productive day because I didn’t finish drawing my design on time and
didn’t even start drawing on the other side of my piece of hard wood. I need to follow my gantt
chart which said that I needed to finish by tomorrow and Monday’s first period. I didn’t like
drawing my design because it was hard to draw the head properly, but I’ll keep trying it.
Whatʼs Next:
I hope to finish the design drawing on the back of my hardwood. I also want to try and cut the
wood out by tomorrow, so that I can start doing the other parts of my project.
Learner Profile/AOI:
I think today’s lesson was an ‘approach to learning’ because we did practical work instead of
doing paper work.
