Cuban poet Armando Valladares was so committed to his principles he
spent 22 years in prison for them.
At 23 years old, he refused to put a sign on his desk saying he was a
communist and was incarcerated.
He was committed to stay true to his belief in the freedom of the
human spirit and found ways to share his work with the outside world
while in jail.
To survive the long, dark years in prison, Armando turned inward for
strength. He said that “being in prison with no light for many years, you
can always close your eyes and have your inner light, your inner world,
as I did.”

  • 28. Cuban poet Armando Valladares was so committed to his principles he spent 22 years in prison for them. At 23 years old, he refused to put a sign on his desk saying he was a communist and was incarcerated. He was committed to stay true to his belief in the freedom of the human spirit and found ways to share his work with the outside world while in jail. To survive the long, dark years in prison, Armando turned inward for strength. He said that “being in prison with no light for many years, you can always close your eyes and have your inner light, your inner world, as I did.” A Prisoner of Conscience 28 | © Franklin Covey Co.
