This article discusses current controversies in action research. It begins by noting there is confusion and disagreement about the nature and distinctiveness of action research as an approach. The author argues that action research aims to achieve three main goals: improving practice, enhancing the problem-solving abilities of practitioners, and advancing knowledge about practice itself.
The author examines the methodological implications of these goals. First, understanding practice requires understanding the interpretations and values of those involved in practice. Second, improving practice means progressively resolving problems that arise. Third, certain value commitments are implied by conducting action research as a collaborative problem-solving process.
While the characteristics of action research are incompatible with a positivist view of science, the author argues they are
