I love watching, writing, and talking about a wide range of sports. I have dedicated my college career to reinvigorating and reinventing how sports are covered at my university, Mercer University. I am now looking for an opportunity to take my experience to a professional level. I wish to expand my understanding and knowledge of sports journalism as a whole. I am looking to evolve the information that I have obtained over the years, and successfully carry out tasks in a practiced workforce.
Background.
I am the son of a Brazilian-born, Lebanese-raised father and a Cuban mother. I speak fluent English and Spanish.
Experience.
Sports Editor, “The Cluster” Mercer University school newspaper, 2009-2011.
Took a section that struggled to accumulate one page of layout to consistently compiling four pages per issue. Redesigned the newspapers coverage and the way Mercer University sports are covered. Established a solid foundation of writers for the paper that has seen a continuous growth under my control. Have added a great deal of character to a paper that was lacking depth and versatility. Have steadily assembled layouts that have been both unique and well-balanced. Began my “Behind the Jersey” editorial that appears in each issue of the paper. Started the standalone segment of “Bear Facts” as an issue-to-issue piece.
Staff writer, “The Cluster” Mercer University school newspaper, 2008-2011.
Reported and wrote stories about Mercer University sports teams. Reported local news and entertainment reviews throughout my tenure on staff. Reviews included movies, music, video games and television shows. Submitted and had published photographs I’d taken to compliment my stories.
Sports Newsroom Programming, Sirius XM Radio intern, 2011
Organized, found and cut live sports audio for multiple sports (i.e. NCAA basketball, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, etc.) Audio included highlights, interviews, and post-game press conferences. Also worked in live radio studios such as baseball, NASCAR, fantasy sports, golf and more.
Blogging with Wordpress, 2008-2011.
Have kept up with blogs throughout my college career. Can always freely speak my mind and opinion on a vast and broad spectrum of topics.
Skills.
Can use InDesign at a high, rapid level. Experienced in editing photos with PhotoShop, videos in Final Cut Pro, and audio in multiple programs. Successfully work under strict deadlines. Can compile newspaper layouts under pressured circumstances. An extremely hard worker who’s incredibly precise with following procedures and directions. Has elusive and immeasurable creativity. Never settles for mediocrity. Doesn’t allow for work to be left incomplete. Am always exceedingly organized. Can always be extraordinarily reliable. I have held one or two jobs since the day I turned 16. Deadlines and promptness are important to me. Am overly sociable and approachable. Can take constructive criticism and build off of it. I take pride in learning from my mistakes and seeing to it that they do not happen again. Can work well both independently and within a team. Also, am extremely familiar with many different social medias (i.e. Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Foursquare, Twitter, etc.)
Education.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Miami, Florida, 2004-2008.
Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, 2008-2011.
Studying journalism with Spanish minor
The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., 2011 (Spring semester)
Awards.
February 2010 & February 2011 (Two-time winner)
1st place - Georgia College Press Association for Best Campus Community Service in Sports
References.
Can be provided.
