1. The World Around Us: Summary of Unit: In this unit students will take on the role of explorers as they view the world around them both inside and outside. We will discuss each state of matter in depth and do different activities with each one. For example: The liquid state of matter deals with water so we will be discussing the water cycle, liquids around us , and how they change into other states. The students will work on tasks individually and as groups to gather information and eventually have a final presentation on what the learned. Questions to keep in mind for this unit: Why do things change? Does our world need different types of matter such as solids, liquids, and gases? What would it be like if we did not have different types of matter? What is the processes of solids, liquids, and gases? What are the physical properties of each state of matter? State Standard: Science Grade 2: Identify states of matter as solids, liquids, or gases. Objective: Students will be able to distinguish between the different states of matter according to physical properties and be able to describe their changes between states. Benefits: After this unit, students will be able to label the world around them as to what state of matter it is. They will gain social skills by working in groups, research skills by gathering their information, and time management skills by turning in assignments on schedule. What is project-based learning? Project based learning is the use of classroom projects, intended to bring about deep learning, where students use technology and inquiry to engage with issues and questions that are relevant to their lives Contact Information: Name: Ms. Stephanie Sullivan Email: slsullivan1@crimson.ua.edu Phone: 256-566-3425
