Learning does not end when you graduate. From elementary school to college to career, it’s a
lifelong process. In the corporate world, learning typically comes in the form of employee training,
which is viewed as a cost center factored into the annual budget. This is often a rather large
expenditure, especially for those companies with hundreds of employees who need training.

Despite this investment, and the importance of learning – in both onboarding new employees and
continuing education for existing employees – training is rarely considered in terms of business
strategy. But, when done efficiently and effectively, learning and development can actually be a profit

draw more attention to this often undervalued part of business.
The market for training is growing, but what about the role of the Chief Learning Officer? In many
cases, CLOs don’t have C-Suite visibility. If companies in the U.S. are going to spend over $70 billion
each year on training, they need to take a proactive approach to ensure success – and return – is
achieved, so training can be viewed through the same lens as marketing, sales and operations.
In fact, according to Training magazine’s 2015 report, U.S. training
expenditures rose to $70.6 billion in 2015 – a more than 14 percent increase
from the year prior.

Corporate training has historically been delivered through a one-size-fits-all approach. Departments
require it and employees complete it simply because it has to be done. Many employees in the
current talent market are demanding better training and development opportunities from their
employers and see professional development as one of the most valuable assets that businesses

When employees feel their company is making an investment in them, they are more likely to
stay and grow rather than seek opportunities elsewhere. And it can take up to 6-9 months of an
employee’s salary to recruit and train their replacement, so preventing turnover is key.

ROI Institute accounts that 96 percent of CEOs want to see a direct business impact from their
company’s training programs, but only a mere eight percent currently do. Additionally, 74 percent
look for an ROI for their training programs, but only four percent have identified one.
These numbers are telling: it is our job to prove to senior leadership that, like any other initiative,
training can be strategic and effective if we move the mindset of training beyond the “it’s the way
we’ve always done it” mentality. Proving to leadership the true business value of training can give
you, and learning, a seat at the table. And if U.S. companies are going to continue to invest billions
in training, it’s time to change the way they train to achieve the best possible results. In order to
most effectively train employees, we need to approach training in a fundamentally different way.
According to Deloitte’s Global Human Capital Trends 2016 report, offering
better learning opportunities is one of the largest drivers of employee
engagement and a strong workplace culture.

Every person has their own unique learning style. Companies that continue to ignore the inherent
need to provide personalized training opportunities designed specifically for each learner will never
unlock the benefits of a strategic training approach.
In the rare cases where adaptive learning is offered through learning management systems today,
quiz results are used as the basis for dictating learning paths. But assessments only tell a small
part of the story. Access to other forms of learning data—analytical data—can help learning leaders

  • 2. 2 Learning does not end when you graduate. From elementary school to college to career, it’s a lifelong process. In the corporate world, learning typically comes in the form of employee training, which is viewed as a cost center factored into the annual budget. This is often a rather large expenditure, especially for those companies with hundreds of employees who need training. Using Artificial Intelligence and Data-Driven Learning to Get a Seat at the Table MAKE CORPORATE TRAINING AN EFFECTIVE PART OF THE BUSINESS STRATEGY. Despite this investment, and the importance of learning – in both onboarding new employees and continuing education for existing employees – training is rarely considered in terms of business strategy. But, when done efficiently and effectively, learning and development can actually be a profit driver. People are a business’s best asset, and when you can prove training will impact your ROI, you’ll draw more attention to this often undervalued part of business. The market for training is growing, but what about the role of the Chief Learning Officer? In many cases, CLOs don’t have C-Suite visibility. If companies in the U.S. are going to spend over $70 billion each year on training, they need to take a proactive approach to ensure success – and return – is achieved, so training can be viewed through the same lens as marketing, sales and operations. In fact, according to Training magazine’s 2015 report, U.S. training expenditures rose to $70.6 billion in 2015 – a more than 14 percent increase from the year prior.
  • 3. 3 REEVALUATE YOUR COMPANY’S APPROACH TO CORPORATE TRAINING TO MAKE YOUR INVESTMENT MEANINGFUL. Corporate training has historically been delivered through a one-size-fits-all approach. Departments require it and employees complete it simply because it has to be done. Many employees in the current talent market are demanding better training and development opportunities from their employers and see professional development as one of the most valuable assets that businesses can provide. When employees feel their company is making an investment in them, they are more likely to stay and grow rather than seek opportunities elsewhere. And it can take up to 6-9 months of an employee’s salary to recruit and train their replacement, so preventing turnover is key. Fortunately, training expenditures are increasing, indicating that businesses are prioritizing corporate learning. For companies that have already made the decision to invest in training, it is important that they see a return on investment (ROI), or training could lose if priorities shift. The ROI Institute accounts that 96 percent of CEOs want to see a direct business impact from their company’s training programs, but only a mere eight percent currently do. Additionally, 74 percent look for an ROI for their training programs, but only four percent have identified one. These numbers are telling: it is our job to prove to senior leadership that, like any other initiative, training can be strategic and effective if we move the mindset of training beyond the “it’s the way we’ve always done it” mentality. Proving to leadership the true business value of training can give you, and learning, a seat at the table. And if U.S. companies are going to continue to invest billions in training, it’s time to change the way they train to achieve the best possible results. In order to most effectively train employees, we need to approach training in a fundamentally different way. According to Deloitte’s Global Human Capital Trends 2016 report, offering better learning opportunities is one of the largest drivers of employee engagement and a strong workplace culture.
  • 4. 4 Every person has their own unique learning style. Companies that continue to ignore the inherent need to provide personalized training opportunities designed specifically for each learner will never unlock the benefits of a strategic training approach. In the rare cases where adaptive learning is offered through learning management systems today, quiz results are used as the basis for dictating learning paths. But assessments only tell a small part of the story. Access to other forms of learning data—analytical data—can help learning leaders better predict their employees’ comprehension, retention and application of the material based on behavior and performance metrics captured in-course. By improving performance in these key learning areas, businesses will help employees to learn more effectively, which will translate to increased overall ROI for the company, because employees will be better prepared for their jobs. How do we currently measure success? Many companies report on training results such as employee satisfaction, hours of training completed, and scores from end-of-training tests or quizzes. With predictive and prescriptive analytics determined from learning data, we can predict employee success, their likelihood to pass a course and their future engagement levels with training content, all based on their interactions with content. We can identify key behavioral traits and patterns that correlate to success in a course by studying each learner and each piece of content.
