The Evolution Of Location Based Marketing

▪ Consumers don’t just ignore the irrelevant
marketing messages.The Janrain and Blue
Research shows that nine in 10 respondents
have developed an unfavorable attitude to the
company or taken some kind of action to limit
the messaging in response to a company that
consistently mis-targeted them in their
marketing efforts.
▪ Companies have a choice: they can ‘keep
offering coffee to the consumers that sleep’ and
hope for the best, or they can actually embrace
the technologies and the information available
to them, and localize and personalize their
marketing before it’s too late.
INDUSTRYTRENDS
According to MediaPost:
Despite the many announcements of retailers
launching beacon programs over the last year
or so, many from major retailers including
Macy’s, Lord &Taylor and, most recently,
Target, fewer than a third (29%) of retailers
have beacons in stores, based on a new study.
On the positive side, 17% more plan to add
beacons, which would bring the total with
beacons to 46%, according to the 2015 Store
Operations Survey, the fourth annual study
comprising a survey of 100 retail executives by
RetailTouchPoints.
INDUSTRYTRENDS CONT...
 This means that more than half (54%) of
retailers have not implemented low
energy level bluetooth beacons with no
current plans to do so. But it could be
their loss.
 Business Insider has also estimated that
in 2016 beacon based technologies will
drive about $44 billion worth of sales for
big retailers in the US alone, 10 times
higher than in 2015.
COSTLY BEACON STRATEGY
Beacons drive sales but at a significant cost in
hardware and setup/configuration to the business.
Hardware purchase for beacons like Eddystone or
iBeacon $5-$50 per device, limited lifespan,
environmental limitations.
Time involved with strategizing an overall
marketing plan with the use of beacons while
integrating into an active campaign.
Limited range: from 70m to 450m.
Managing the beacons and integrating into
existing technology can take days to weeks.
Proximity Solutions providers who can assist with
integration can also be very expensive

▪ Millennials in the US are increasingly
interested in mobile coupons. Nearly half of
millennial coupon users in the US used more
mobile coupons in Q3 2015 than a year earlier,
according toValassis.Almost half (45%) used
more paperless discounts versus 30% of all US
coupon users.
▪ While about a third of millennial coupon users
say they increased their paper coupon usage—
those that come in the mail, as well as those
that come in newspaper coupon books—the
largest growth came in paperless discounts,
or those received on smartphones or other
mobile devices.

According toTheNextWeb.com: ▪ Consumers don’t just ignore the irrelevant marketing messages.The Janrain and Blue Research shows that nine in 10 respondents have developed an unfavorable attitude to the company or taken some kind of action to limit the messaging in response to a company that consistently mis-targeted them in their marketing efforts. ▪ Companies have a choice: they can ‘keep offering coffee to the consumers that sleep’ and hope for the best, or they can actually embrace the technologies and the information available to them, and localize and personalize their marketing before it’s too late.

INDUSTRYTRENDS According to MediaPost: Despite the many announcements of retailers launching beacon programs over the last year or so, many from major retailers including Macy’s, Lord &Taylor and, most recently, Target, fewer than a third (29%) of retailers have beacons in stores, based on a new study. On the positive side, 17% more plan to add beacons, which would bring the total with beacons to 46%, according to the 2015 Store Operations Survey, the fourth annual study comprising a survey of 100 retail executives by RetailTouchPoints.
  • 5. INDUSTRYTRENDS CONT...  This means that more than half (54%) of retailers have not implemented low energy level bluetooth beacons with no current plans to do so. But it could be their loss.  Business Insider has also estimated that in 2016 beacon based technologies will drive about $44 billion worth of sales for big retailers in the US alone, 10 times higher than in 2015.

COSTLY BEACON STRATEGY Beacons drive sales but at a significant cost in hardware and setup/configuration to the business. Hardware purchase for beacons like Eddystone or iBeacon $5-$50 per device, limited lifespan, environmental limitations. Time involved with strategizing an overall marketing plan with the use of beacons while integrating into an active campaign. Limited range: from 70m to 450m. Managing the beacons and integrating into existing technology can take days to weeks. Proximity Solutions providers who can assist with integration can also be very expensive
