This project involved setting up a basic network between a Windows computer and an Ubuntu virtual machine using a travel router. Key steps included: 1. Creating a network diagram showing the travel router, Windows laptop, and Ubuntu VM connected via Ethernet cables. 2. Configuring the router to assign IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, though IPv6 addressing could not be fully implemented. 3. Bridging the network adapters between the host computer and VM so both could receive IP addresses. 4. Testing connectivity between the devices by pinging each component to ensure proper network function. The last step was changing the router connection to a wireless LAN, though IPv6 addressing still could not be resolved.

2. This project will construct a basic network between a host windows
computer and a virtual machine running Ubuntu Linux via a travel router.
We will check various connection settings along the way, and construct a
new Cat5 cable to connect the router. Lastly, the router will serve it’s
function through WLAN.

3. First we need to create a simple diagram to understand the
network connection between systems.

status would not display in the
status window. I tried
everything without success. All
steps were followed exactly.

17. The Windows computer
successfully pings the virtual
machine.

18. I can successfully ping the router on IPV4 from Windows. There seemed to be some issue that
could not be resolved with the IPV6 Addressing. The router would not broadcast IPV6, and the
address listed on the Host was different than the prefix assigned in the router.

19. Ping was successful from Ubuntu to the Windows host on both IPV4 and IPV6. I had to
use special options to ping IPV6 because it is a loopback address.

20. Ping was successful to the router on IPV4. There seemed to be some issue that could not be
resolved with the IPV6 Addressing. The router would not broadcast IPV6, and the address listed on
the VM was different than the prefix assigned in the router.

21. Now I get to make my own RJ45 Cat 5 cable. I didn’t get the unfinished
blue one in my kit, so I had to cannibalize a premade one.

23. It is pretty tricky to get all the colors line up properly. But sliding them in and crimping the
connector is a breeze. You need the following:
• UTP cable
• RJ-45 connectors
• Crimp tool

24. To test proper assembly, the numbered lights on one side of the tester should correspond with
the other side. You just need:
• Ethernet cable
• UbiGear Cable Tester

25. The last step is to change the router to a wireless LAN connection

27. Here you can see my
home network and the

listed in my Wifi
settings.

29. Because basic networks use IPV4 most of the time, there was no issue
setting it up. However, IPV6 is more complicated. My travel router could
not broadcast for reasons unknown.

30. Configuring a travel router can greatly improve the security of your
mobile network, especially when used with a VPN. Making your own
ethernet cables is a great skill for creating clean, custom hardware
connections.

31. This course formed the core foundation of the skills I need in the tech
industry. Creating ethernet cables, configuring IP Routing, and diagnosing
connections between nodes are valuable skills.
