Mr. Gilbert, a 5th grade teacher, wants to use background music in a student photo movie that the students will recognize, but the available copyright-free music on the website does not fit. Mrs. Walker, a 4th grade teacher, found photos of the American Revolution on Google Images to include in a PowerPoint presentation. The document discusses digital rights and responsibilities when using online media and notes that teachers should cite sources for any media used, just as they expect students to do. It also recommends the Creative Commons website for finding images approved for educational use.
I used this presentation to introduce Digital Citizenship to my classes at the beginning of 2010. I tried to get them to see we are a global community as well as a community in our own classroom. A good citizen follows laws while a good digital citizen follows the rules of the internet (netiquette) as well as the classroom. This presentation is an ongoing document that I continuously edit and add to until I feel I have everything I need to teach my students to be responsible citizens using their computers. However, I wanted to share it now to help those of you who are looking for a starting point to teach this subject as well.

Abstract
As technology moves at a rapid pace it is important to review how students from low socio economic areas are catered for. Schools in these areas face many challenges; how they address these issues impacts on the students’ participation and skills as digital and global citizens. The government is implementing policies and funding to reduce the digital divide, but is it enough to prepare students from low socio economic areas to function effectively as digital citizens.

No Budget, No Time, No People—No Problem: Meaningful UDL on a Shoestring3Play Media
Hear real-world-tested strategies for folding inclusive design practices into your existing teaching-and-learning work, even when your unit is one person, you have little to no budget, and your time is already stretched thin. You will learn interaction-program-, and enterprise-level strategies for increasing the persistence, retention, and satisfaction of your learners, clients, and customers—all on a shoestring.
This is an authentic task that highlights the issues of real situations for the learners to have informed judgments when they will be doing these tasks.
This is an explanation of my chief responsibilities as an E-Learning Librarian that I provided in a synchronous online session of the class "Emerging Technologies in Libraries" at the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies at the University of Missouri at the invitation of the professor, Dr. Heather Moulaison, on November 4, 2014.

2. Digital Rights
and Responsibilities
The privileges and freedoms extended to
all digital technology users and the
behavioral expectations that come with
them.

3. Scenario 1- Digital R&R:
Mr. Gilbert, a 5th grade teacher, is compiling a
collection of student photos and converting them
to a movie using Animoto online software.
Although the Animoto site offers non-copyrighted
music, the teacher wants the background music
for the movie to be something the students will
recognize. The students will not recognize any of
the songs this site offers.
3
4. Which is a common misconception about digital
media?
A. For educational purposes only, you
can do what you like with digital
media.
B. Altering media and claiming as your
own is acceptable. 4
5. Scenario 2 -Digital R&R:
Mrs. Walker is a fourth-grade teacher who is
introducing a new unit on the American
Revolution to her students. She creates a
beautiful PowerPoint presentation in which she
has photos of famous people and places from
that time period. She obtained these photos by
doing a Google image search.
5
6. Is she permitted to get images from Google
to use in your presentation ?
A. Yes
B. No
C. Maybe
D. I don’t know
6
7. Digital Change in Practice
Students will do the things their teachers model. If a
teacher expects that her students will cite sources, it is
imperative that she do the same thing with any and all
media (print, digital, audio) that she uses in her
classroom. Teachers need to be educated about search
engines and how to locate images that are intended for
educational use.

8. Consider this:
• Using a site like Creative Commons can help students build
digitally appropriate projects.
