There are several main youth subcultures, including chavs, emos, punks, and skinheads. Each subculture has distinct styles of dress, music preferences, and behaviors that allow people to find belonging in social groups. For example, chavs are typically identified by tracksuit bottoms, baseball caps, and Nike sneakers, while emos favor skinny jeans, plimsolls, band t-shirts, and dark makeup. Punks strive to be nonconformists through clothing like jeans, boots, and studded jackets. Skinheads have shorter hair and tattoos, often wearing tight jeans, boots, and flight jackets.

The Different Types Of Youth Subculture There are many different types of youth subculture's around that are used everyday in order to stereotype people and also for people to be able to fit into groups within day to day society. The main types of subcultures we use today are chav, emo, punk and skinheads. We can determine which group we think people belong in from there clothes, hairstyle, music they listen to and there shoes.

3. The Subculture Chav We see a chav as someone that wears a lot of jewellery, tracksuit bottoms, a base ball cap and Nike air trainers. However there are many people that may wear a variety of these things but don’t see themselves as a chav but we place them in that category through stereotyping. There is also another subculture to the chav which is a chavette and this is the name for a female chav. They are also seen as being people that wear lots of jewellery, tracksuit bottoms, trainers, having there hair up to the side and a child. Chav’s and Chavette’s are also commonly stereotyped as wearing Burberry all the time.

4. The Subculture Chav These are the sort of people that we would stereotype as being cahvs as they are all in tracksuit bottoms a few have caps on and they are all wearing Nike trainers Catherine Tate came up with her idea of a stereotypical chav and named her Vicky Pollard. We always see her walking around with a large number of children, a tracksuit on, her hair up in a ponytail and lots of jewellery on.

The Subculture Emo The term emo short for emotional music is an evolving and complex American youth subculture that listens to a specific genre of music, which is characterised by feelings of vulnerability and a willingness to express heart-felt confessions about adolescence. There are many artists that produce emo titled genre of music and these include paramore, funeral for a friend and panic at the disco. The behaviour’s, attitude’s and values expressed through the music involve emotionally turbulent themes often associated with adolescence such as despair, nostalgia, heartbreak, hope, and self-loathing

6. The Subculture Emo We tend to say that emo’s wear skinny jeans, plimsolls, band t-shirts, have big fringes within there hair and wear a lot of black make up. We also stereotypically say that both emo’s and goth's self harm there selves as they have a lot of emotions going on inside them and they feel that this is the only way to take some control of it.

7. The Subculture Punk Although it has been stated that true punk is not a look or a fad, nevertheless, the look of punk is important because it is a visible expression of the anti-conformity philosophy. The dress of a punk reflects the attitude. Jeans, doc martins, red laces, studded jackets, army pants, safety pins etc. are all a visible expression of the punks desire to be non-conformist. Nowadays, however, much of the punk rock music has lost its political meaning in the attempt to be commercially viable.

Subculture Punk Punk’s tend to make them selves look totally different to your everyday person in order to stand out and to show that they don’t want to fit in with everyone else and they don’t care what people think of them. We also never really hear punk music on most of our mainstream radio stations such as Radio 1 and Vibe as they feel that it would not commercially fit in with what most of there listeners want to hear.

9. The Subculture Skinheads The Skinhead culture has a variety of subcultures within the culture itself due to the evolution and separation of different groups of skinheads. The Skinhead subculture originated in the mid to late sixties and was created by the working class community that had a strong fondness for fashion and music. The original Skinheads enjoyed listening to soul, ska, blue beat, and rock steady music. They were also highly influenced by the Jamaican Rude Boy subculture. Originally, the skinhead subculture was primarily based on those elements, not politics or race.

The Subculture Skinheads We tend to be able to tell a skinhead from the clothes they wear as they often have shorter hair and a lot of tattoos and wear items—such as high boots, tight jeans, T-shirts, and flight jackets. Also in the early days of the skinheads they were seen as being racist and still have very high and opinionated views today.
