PUNK SUBCULTURE
The punk subculture, which centres on punk
rock music, includes a diverse array
of ideologies, fashions and forms of expression,
including visual art, dance, literature and film.
The subculture is largely characterized by anti-
establishment views and the promotion of
individual freedom.
The punk subculture is centered on a loud,
aggressive genre of rock music called punk
rock. It is usually played by small bands
consisting of a vocalist, one or two electric
guitarists, an electric bassist and a drummer.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN
•The Punk subculture emerged in the mid 1970’s in the US and UK .
•Punk fashion was an anarchic and aggressive movement.
•Punk as a movement began as a revolt against British political values.
•It began as a working-class movement which disapproved of the growing
unemployment, lack of minimum-wage policies, failure of trade-union representations and
capitalism.
•The undertone of punk was to oppose the idols of the middle class.
•Various writers, books, and literary movements were important to the formation of the
punk aesthetic.
•The clothes suited the lifestyle of those with limited cash due to low income.
•Generally unkempt, often short hairstyles replaced the long-hair hippie look and the
usually elaborate 1970s rock
•Deliberately offensive T-shirts were popular in the early punk scene.
•Many female punks rebelled against the stereotypical image of a woman by combining
clothes that were delicate or pretty with clothes that were considered masculine.
•Apparently, “Everything supposed to be hidden was brought to the front”, both literally
and figuratively.

IDEOLOGIES
Trends in punk politics include anarchism, individualism, socialism, anti-militarism, anti-
capitalism, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-nationalism, homophilia, environmentalism,
vegetarianism, veganism and animal rights. However, some individuals within the
punk subculture hold right-wing views (such as those associated with
the Conservative Punk website), neo-Nazi views (Nazi punk), or
are apolitical (e.g., horror punk).
PUNK FASHION TODAY(21ST CENTURY )
Punk fashion was first and foremost seen internationally as very anti-materialistic and defined
the definition of glamor as a rebellion of the disco era also happening at the time. Today,
punk has become such a mainstream look from fast fashion to couture. Punk has become
everything it was once fighting against, glamor. It seems that the distinct rebellious style can
be seen on the runway at any given season. We may have lost sight of the foundation of
what it meant to be punk but the impressive and edgy look that 70’s punk dawned on us has
made an undeniable print on fashion and society.
From ripped jeans, ultra mini skirts, the classic ripped tights and head to toe leather; the 21st
century is still seeing dark and rebellious wardrobes that scream Joan Jett and Debbie Harry
can be seen coming down the runways of Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy

Early punk fashion adapted
everyday objects for aesthetic
effect: ripped clothing was
held together by safety pins or
wrapped with tape; ordinary
clothing was customised by
embellishing it with marker or
adorning it with paint; a
black bin liner became a dress,
shirt or skirt; safety pins and
razor blades were used as
jewellery. Also popular have
been leather, rubber,
and vinyl clothing that the
general public associates
with transgressive sexual
practices like bondage and S&
M
VISUAL ART
Punk aesthetics determine the type of art punks enjoy, usually
with underground, minimalistic, iconoclastic and satirical sensibilities. Punk artwork graces album
covers, flyers for concerts, and punk zines. The use of images of suffering to shock and create feelings
of empathy in the viewer is common. Alternatively, punk artwork may contain images of selfishness,
stupidity, or apathy to provoke contempt in the viewer.
DANCE
Two dance styles associated with punk are pogo dancing and moshing.Stage diving and crowd
surfing were originally associated with protopunk bands such as The Stooges, and have appeared at
punk, metal and rock concerts. Ska punk promoted an updated version of skanking. Hardcore
dancing is a later development influenced by all of the above-mentioned styles.
LITERATURE
Punk has generated a considerable amount of poetry and prose. Punk has its own underground
press in the form of punk zines, which feature news, gossip, cultural criticism, and interviews. Some
zines take the form of perzines.
FILM
Many punk-themed films have been made. The No Wave Cinema and Remodernist film movements
owe much to punk aesthetics. Several famous punk bands have participated in movies, such as the
Ramones in Rock 'n' Roll High School, the Sex Pistols in The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and Social
Distortion in Another State of Mind. Derek Jarman and Don Letts are notable punk filmmakers.
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
The punk subculture has spread to many countries around the world. The fluidity of
musical expression in particular makes it an ideal medium for this cross-cultural
interpretation.
Mexico
In Mexico, punk culture is primarily a
phenomenon among middle and upper class
youth, many of whom were first exposed to punk
music through travel to England.[58] Because of
low fees at public universities in Mexico, a
significant minority of Mexican punks are
university students. PERU
Post-apartheid punk subculture continues to be
active in South African politics, organizing a
2000 festival called Punks Against Racism at
Thrashers Statepark in Pretoria. Rather than the
sense of despondency and fatalism that
characterized 1970s British punk subculture, the
politically engaged South African scene is
more positive about the future of South Africa.
South Africa
Punk arrived slowly in South Africa during the
1970s when waves of British tradesman
welcomed by the then-apartheid government
brought cultural influences like the popular
British music magazine NME,sold in South
Africa six weeks after publication.
CANADA
The emergence of punk rock in Canada
followed roughly the timelines of both the UK and
the US, and was at first confined to Canada's
largest cities. Since the mid-1980s, Canada's
punk scene has spread over the entire country,
including small rural towns and villages.

MILEY CYRUS
RIHANNA
Aanchal Sukhija whose jewelry designed using everyday mundane objects and trash like
pipes, steel scrubs, AC foam, and mops was showcased at New York Fashion Week earlier
this year. Her personal style is also equally dramatic and unique! The DIY approach
towards of curating something will the traditional-ness intact with an unexpected element
is what makes her a different kind of Indian-ly punk women.
Miley Cyrus is the queen of rock and roll style. These days she often
sticks to jeans and a graphic tee, giving the basic pieces an
elevated spin with the help of killer accessories.
Rihanna has rocked lots of standout styles in her day, but she's never worked
a look quite like this one.
Green hair that is spiked up in all different directions. As if that isn't shocking
enough, she pairs her hair with huge square-shaped earrings, an eyebrow
ring, and a Dior sports bra and colorful fur coat.

INDIAN PUNK OR PUNK IN INDIA
Earliest adaptors of the Indian-Punk trend might be signers like Tritha Sinha and Sona Mahapatra
who gave Indo-Western dressing their own musical twist by introducing elements like big dark
bindis, kohl and quirky drapes with a pop of color.
Thank you

PUNK Subculture

  • 2. P U N K
  • 3. PUNK SUBCULTURE The punk subculture, which centres on punk rock music, includes a diverse array of ideologies, fashions and forms of expression, including visual art, dance, literature and film. The subculture is largely characterized by anti- establishment views and the promotion of individual freedom. The punk subculture is centered on a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called punk rock. It is usually played by small bands consisting of a vocalist, one or two electric guitarists, an electric bassist and a drummer.
  • 4. HISTORY AND ORIGIN •The Punk subculture emerged in the mid 1970’s in the US and UK . •Punk fashion was an anarchic and aggressive movement. •Punk as a movement began as a revolt against British political values. •It began as a working-class movement which disapproved of the growing unemployment, lack of minimum-wage policies, failure of trade-union representations and capitalism. •The undertone of punk was to oppose the idols of the middle class. •Various writers, books, and literary movements were important to the formation of the punk aesthetic. •The clothes suited the lifestyle of those with limited cash due to low income. •Generally unkempt, often short hairstyles replaced the long-hair hippie look and the usually elaborate 1970s rock •Deliberately offensive T-shirts were popular in the early punk scene. •Many female punks rebelled against the stereotypical image of a woman by combining clothes that were delicate or pretty with clothes that were considered masculine. •Apparently, “Everything supposed to be hidden was brought to the front”, both literally and figuratively.
  • 6. IDEOLOGIES Trends in punk politics include anarchism, individualism, socialism, anti-militarism, anti- capitalism, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-nationalism, homophilia, environmentalism, vegetarianism, veganism and animal rights. However, some individuals within the punk subculture hold right-wing views (such as those associated with the Conservative Punk website), neo-Nazi views (Nazi punk), or are apolitical (e.g., horror punk). PUNK FASHION TODAY(21ST CENTURY ) Punk fashion was first and foremost seen internationally as very anti-materialistic and defined the definition of glamor as a rebellion of the disco era also happening at the time. Today, punk has become such a mainstream look from fast fashion to couture. Punk has become everything it was once fighting against, glamor. It seems that the distinct rebellious style can be seen on the runway at any given season. We may have lost sight of the foundation of what it meant to be punk but the impressive and edgy look that 70’s punk dawned on us has made an undeniable print on fashion and society.
