Organizational culture?
• Is the basic pattern of shared assumptions,
values and belief that govern behaviour within
particular organization.
• It defines what is important and unimportant
in the company.
• Called corporate culture in the business
setting.
What is Organizational culture?
Dominant culture, Subcultures and
Countercultures :-
• Subcultures
– Groups of individuals with a unique pattern of
values and philosophy that is consistent with the
organization’s dominant values and philosphy.
– Strong subcultures are often found in high
performance teams.
• Countercultures
– Groups of individual with a pattern of values and
philosophy that reject the surrounding culture
– Merges and acquisitions may produce counter
cultures in an organization.
“Organizations are more effective when they
operate without subcultures and
countercultures.”
The statements above is not accurate. The reason is because of
subcultures and countercultures are very important for the
organization.
BENEFITS OF SUBCULTURES AND COUNTERCULTURES TO THE
COMPANY.
1. They maintain the organization’s standards of performance and
ethical behaviour.
2. They are the spawning grounds for merging value that keep the
firm aligned with the needs of customers, society and the
stakeholders.
3. subcultures can serve as containers of creativity in which ideas
can formulate relatively independently of the constraints or
influences of the strong culture.
Benefits of subcultures and
countercultures.
1) They maintain the organization’s standards of performance and
ethical behaviour.
• Employees who hold countercultural values are an important
source of surveillance and evaluation of the dominant order.
• They encourage constructive controversy and more creative
thinking about how the organization should interact with its
environment.
• Subculture prevents employees from blindly following one set of
values and thereby helps the organization to abide by society’s
ethical value.

2) They are the spawning grounds for merging value that
keep the firm aligned with the needs of customers,
society and the stakeholders
• company eventually need to replace their dominant
values with ones that are more appropriate for the
changing environment.
• if the subcultures are suppressed, the organization makes
take longer to discover and adopt value aligned with the
merging environment.
3) : Strong culture firms that allow subcultures to
emerge will be more innovative than strong culture
firms that prevent subcultures from emerging.
