This document provides an overview of plot development in story writing. It defines plot as the arrangement of events in a story that allows the reader to learn about characters, setting, and moral. The main elements of plot are then outlined as: 1) Introduction, where characters and conflict are established, 2) Rising Action, where a series of conflicts unfold, 3) Climax, the peak moment of conflict resolution, 4) Falling Action, where things start to wind down, and 5) Resolution, the concluding outcome. Examples are given for each element using a hypothetical story about a character named Fiona moving to Ireland. The document aims to teach students how to apply these plot elements in their own writing.

Every story, or narrative, has five essential elements. Let's take a closer look at each of the five.

Plot-Plot is "what happens" in the story. The action of every story can be mapped out using a plot diagram. There are five key points to the plot of every story:
1. Beginning or Exposition-this is when characters and problems are introduced to the reader. Example: Romeo and Juliet's families are enemies, but Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and like each other.
2. Rising Action-this is where the problem and characters are developed through a series of actions that builds to the . . .
Example: Romeo visits Juliet on a balcony one night, and then she sends a message to him through her nurse. They meet and secretly wed without their families' knowledge. Romeo kills Juliet's cousin Tybalt, and he is exiled. Juliet's father orders her to marry someone else. Juliet fakes her death, sending a message to Romeo to let him know, but he hears of her death and doesn't get the message.
3. Climax-this is where the problem (or conflict) is resolved in one way or another. The climax is often called the "turning point" in a story.
Example: Romeo kills himself, and Juliet wakes from her sleep, sees him, and kills herself.
4. Falling Action or Denoument-this is where the reader learns what happens as a result of the climax-or the way in which the problem was solved.
Example: The two families mourn Romeo and Juliet.
5. Resolution-where the entire plot is wrapped up and there is a sense of closure for the reader.
Example: Romeo and Juliet's deaths have ended their families' feud and there is peace in Verona.

Characters-Narratives have characters. A narrative has to have a protagonist, which is the main character in the story, and one or more antagonists, characters who are in conflict with the protagonist.
Example: Romeo and Juliet are the protagonists. Their conflict is with their families and their parents, especially Juliet whose parents wish her to marry someone else.
Conflict-For there to be a narrative, the main character, or protagonist, has to have a conflict, or problem. Sometimes the conflict involves the protagonist and another person (man versus man). Sometimes the conflict involves the protagonist and the environment or nature (man versus nature). At other times, the conflict involves the protagonist against himself (man versus self), as he attempts to overcome a weakness or flaw.
Example: Romeo and Juliet's conflict is that their families are in a feud, and they are not allowed to be with each other.
Setting-Narratives have a time and place where the action is set.
Example: Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy.
Theme-Narratives have a theme, or main idea/underlying meaning. Theme should be stated in a complete sentence.
For example, Romeo and Juliet is not just about "love," but you could state the theme as "Love overcomes hate

Most stories, as we’re familiar with them through movies, have the structure of a beginning, middle, and end. The plot is essentially the action of the story, where one event or action leads to another event or action, which leads in a long string of actions that arrives at a final confrontation. After the final confrontation, there is the resolution and denouement. This story telling structure is embodied through a model known as Freytag’s Pyramid, which maps out a traditional plot like this:
2. Point of View – Who is telling this story, a first person or third person narrator? How would you characterize this narrator?
In any literary work, whether it’s a short story, poem, or novel, the point of view from which a story is told is an important element to keep in mind, because the ‘point of view’ determines who the narrator is, the narrator being the one who’s telling the story. We often assume that it’s the author who is telling the story, but it’s not as simple as that. There are 3 basic types of points of view and an author has to choose which one he or she will use. The 3 types are as follows: first person, second person, third person.
3. Characters – List and describe the primary characters of the story. Focus on specific details about each character, such as certain behaviors and/or things they say.
This is probably the most familiar of all the literary elements and the one we immediately react to when reading any story. The analysis of a character is one of the core activities of most literary interpretation and it’s hard to cover all the ways we go about analyzing a character, most of which you’ll learn to do through consistent practice and engagement with the works we read in this class. In the most general sense, what we look at in a character is their behavior, the actions they take and/or the decisions they make. We look closely at what they say in order to get a sense of their view of a situation, or their view of the world; we also focus on how they interact with other characters, asking ourselves if a certain act or decision has aggressive implications, or was meant well but with unfortunate consequences. These are things to pay attention to, along with what they say through dialogue, which is also revealing about a character. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

4. Meaning of a Story’s Plot:
The plot is the most important part of a
story, just like the brain.
It is the arrangement of events or actions in
a story. In that arrangement, we learn
more about the characters, the
setting/place of action and the moral of
the story.
In a way, the plot is the TRUNK from which
all the other elements of a story grow.
5. Elements of a Story’s Plot:
1. INTRODUCTION: This is the start of the story,
where we meet the main character or
characters, understand the setting, and deduce
the conflict.
For example, we might meet a main character,
named Fiona, who just moved to Ireland, and
is writing her first book. There, we meet the
main character, understand she is in a new
country, and will watch her push to overcome
the challenges that come from each of these
new elements.
6. 2. RISING ACTION
In the rising action, we watch a series of actions
unfold. There is not much in a story if everything
works out perfectly and there are zero bumps in
the road. We need a little conflict.
Conflict can come in many forms. Continuing with
Fiona, perhaps she is battling some sort of
internal conflict. We might see her doubt her
decision to move so far away from home. Or,
with regard to her book, perhaps she submits it
to her agent and it is torn.
Maybe she meets some troublesome Irish lad who
bullies her from her primary purpose and she
must trace back her priorities. The possibilities
for action - and conflict - are endless.
7. 3. CLIMAX
The climax of a story is the peak of the action. At this point,
we have watched the main character confront the action
or conflict, and now something major has to come to a
head.
Perhaps Fiona makes a new acquaintance who takes on a
motherly role, reducing those feelings of doubt about
moving so far away from home. Perhaps she submits the
revised version of her book and it is accepted. Maybe she
stands up to face the troublesome Irish lad.
Just as there are many avenues for action and conflict, there
are many ways to bring a story to a climax. This will be the
moment that stirs up the strongest sense of emotion in the
reader.
8. 4. FALLING ACTION
In the falling action, we see things start to
wind down.
Fiona and her new motherly acquaintance
might have settled into a steady rhythm
of Sunday dinners by now. As for her
book, maybe the only thing she's waiting
for is the advanced copy. Perhaps the
troublesome lad has come back around
to apologise and they are good friends.
9. 5. RESOLUTION
In any story, it is important to conclude with a solid
resolution. Here, we learn of the final outcome of
the tale or story. Short stories, in particular, need a
defined ending. Books, however, can remain
somewhat open-ended. But, you must bring the
story to a close with either a tragic or a happy
ending.
Perhaps Fiona is purchasing a crumbling mansion in
Ireland with the royalties from her book. Or,
maybe she'll move back to her home country,
cherishing her Irish adventure for what it was.
Either way, readers want to experience some sort
of resolution.
