This unit introduces a research project for students to design a study on experiences of crime among young people in their area. Students are provided guidance on key aspects of research design, including: operationalizing concepts; conducting secondary research; determining sample and sampling techniques; choosing primary qualitative methods like interviews and questionnaires; considering ethical issues and problems that may arise; and ensuring the validity and reliability of the study. The goal is for students to understand and apply sociological research methods by designing a hypothetical investigation and mini-scale pilot study on this topic.
