Aims
Exam headlines 2017
• 10% improvement in number of students achieving at least a
standard pass in English and Maths
• Significant improvements in a number of subject areas
• 63% of students achieved at least a standard pass in Maths
• 63% of students achieved at least a standard pass in English
Ofsted monitoring visit, 14th-15th June 2017
• Improvements in leadership and management have continued
• Governance is strong
• The school receives effective support through the Athelstan Trust
• The improvements in teaching, learning and assessment, noted in the
previous monitoring inspection, continue
• Marked improvement in behaviour of students
More to do…
2 targets set by Ofsted:
• provide work that helps pupils of all abilities make the progress they
are capable of
• ensure that pupils know how well they are doing and how to improve
their work.
A key focus will be to continue to improve outcomes for students.
A changing landscape
The government has introduced radical new changes to the structure and
assessment of GCSEs.
We are moving away from the familiar system of A*-G grades to a system of
grading with numbers 9-1.
The government is also raising a ‘good pass’ from a C to a new grade 5,
where a 5 represents the top third of a C and the bottom third of a B.
• Assessment will be mainly by exam
• There is new, more demanding content, which has been developed by
government and the exam boards
• Courses will be designed for two years of study
A reality check
• Mock results from exams at the end of
Year 10 were disappointing for a large
number of students.
The mock exams are only
worth doing if you learn
from them. Don’t settle
for good enough. Strive
for excellence.
