Aims: to have an
understanding of….

Employability –
SKILLS
• Over the next 3-5 years there is an expectation that there
will be a decrease in the number of low skilled
employees.
• By 2020 there is an expectation that nearly 50% of jobs
will be leadership, managerial or professional roles.
• Currently 1 in 3 (30%) jobs demand a degree level skills
this is set to rise.

• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) skills
are in demand; 2 in 5 companies that require staff with
knowledge and skills in STEM are having difficulty
recruiting. A trend expected to continue over coming
years.
Employability -Attitude
• When recruiting school and college leavers attitude
to work, general aptitudes, literacy and numeracy
rank well ahead of academic results alone.
• Employers report that young people lack work
experience and qualities like self management and
attitude to work.
• 88% of business recruiting graduates consider the
right attitude is the most important consideration
(above degree subject and class), and there is a
concern that applicants have a lack of workplace
experience and are not ready for work.

The key findings from the survey of 294 firms, employing 1.24 million workers
Conclusion
When young people go into the workplace they need
to:
• be as highly skilled and qualified as possible.
• have a positive attitude.
• demonstrate key employability skills.
Qualifications are crucial…
• Ofqual are responsible for the quality assurance of
all qualifications, assessments and exams in
England
• Ofqual produce a qualifications framework (all
countries have something similar)
• Throughout life people will train and improve their
qualifications. Crudely – the higher up the
framework the more you get paid!

  • 3. Employability – SKILLS • Over the next 3-5 years there is an expectation that there will be a decrease in the number of low skilled employees. • By 2020 there is an expectation that nearly 50% of jobs will be leadership, managerial or professional roles. • Currently 1 in 3 (30%) jobs demand a degree level skills this is set to rise. • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) skills are in demand; 2 in 5 companies that require staff with knowledge and skills in STEM are having difficulty recruiting. A trend expected to continue over coming years.
  • 4. Employability -Attitude • When recruiting school and college leavers attitude to work, general aptitudes, literacy and numeracy rank well ahead of academic results alone. • Employers report that young people lack work experience and qualities like self management and attitude to work. • 88% of business recruiting graduates consider the right attitude is the most important consideration (above degree subject and class), and there is a concern that applicants have a lack of workplace experience and are not ready for work.   • 5. Conclusion When young people go into the workplace they need to: • be as highly skilled and qualified as possible. • have a positive attitude. • demonstrate key employability skills.

Qualifications are crucial… • Ofqual are responsible for the quality assurance of all qualifications, assessments and exams in England • Ofqual produce a qualifications framework (all countries have something similar) • Throughout life people will train and improve their qualifications. Crudely – the higher up the framework the more you get paid!
