Masao Mori is an IR practitioner and researcher from Tokyo Institute of Technology who has over 10 years of experience. In this talk, he analyzes the criteria and score distributions of two major world university rankings - Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). He finds that reputation surveys seem natural but indicators related to citations, which account for a significant portion of scores, cannot be naturally log-normally distributed as the rankings assume. This calls into question how accurately they measure university performance and quality on a global scale.
