1) Renewable energies like hydropower, biofuels, solar and wind have potential to drive socio-economic development in Zambia but are currently underutilized.
2) Major opportunities include producing biofuels from feedstocks like jatropha, molasses, and palm oil, as well as co-generating electricity from sugarcane bagasse in sugar factories.
3) For renewable energies to be economically viable will require policies like mandatory blending, guaranteed cost-reflective prices for biofuels, and power purchase agreements with standard tariffs for independent power producers.
