Jatropha curcas is a hardy oilseed bearing tree.
Centre of Origin in Central America.
Commonly used in tropical growing areas as a hedge and source of oil.
Can tolerate drought spells.
A plant of many revenue opportunities – oil, power generation, animal feed and fertiliser
Strong global demand for a sustainable energy product, will help countries/ industries meet climate
treaty requirements.
Jatropha curcas has high sustainability potential:
Can be mixed or intercropped alongside existing vegetables/grains, resulting in additional
and balanced cash income for farmers.
Potential GHG savings of up to 66%.
Jatropha curcas remains to be domesticated.

Global Update Jatropha curcas
Jatropha curcas has been planted in a number of different productions models in 25+ countries
around the world
Currently 500.000 ha + of planting in the ground.
Majority was planted with “grain’’ and not with ‘’seed’’ of selected varieties.
The agronomy knowledge base starts to develop but needs refining on a region by region
basis. This is normal at the stage of domistication of the crop.
First oil has been produced in different countries from 2-3 year old planting. Volumes expected to
grow significantly in coming years but still relatively small volumes compared to regular plant
derived commodity oils.
Oil has been used primarely locally as a diesel replacement in generators and has been
used also in biodiesel and shipping/aviation fuel experiments.
Meal is used locally as biomass or fertilizer.
A number of projects suffering under current economic crisis and the downturn in investment
appetite.

Jatropha produces several potential energy sources:
Oil (30-40% on grain weight basis).
up to 2 tonnes per ha based on current genetics.
Jatropha husks and hulls.
Jatropha meal after crushing.

Based on a proprietary production process D1 Oils extracts from Jatropha curcas grains a
