Costa Rica currently relies heavily on oil, consuming 42,000 barrels per day, with 32,000 used for transportation. The country aims to reduce oil consumption by 2,500 barrels per day within 3 years through a clean energy initiative. The initiative would store excess electricity generated from renewable sources like hydro, geothermal, wind and biomass in batteries, hydrogen or air to power vehicles. This would cut spending on oil imports by $64 million annually while helping Costa Rica meet its goal of carbon neutrality by 2021 and boosting the renewable energy economy.
