In order to pass this module, students must obtain a mark of at least 30% in the final examination, as well as obtaining an
overall mark of at least 40% for the module.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
- explain the concept of a phasor and the use of phasors to describe phase differerences between voltages and currents in an
electronic circuit;
- apply complex analysis to the description and design of circuits with resistors, capacitors and inductors;
- design low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop filters.
Syllabus: Analysis of transient response of RC and RL and RLC circuits. Analysis of steady-state AC response of RC, RL and
RLC circuits. Complex analysis of impedance. Phasors. Real, reactive and apparent power. Passive and active filters. Frequency
roll-off and phase shift. Resonant circuits; frequency dependence of impedance; bandwidth & Q factor; filter applications;
introduction to Labview; hardware laboratory sessions on RLC circuits and oscillators.
