Introduction
At the turn of the 20th century, Europe was feeling pretty darned good! It controlled empires that encircled the globe. European technology was unsurpassed. Even its art and music were the envy of the rest of world. In 1900, Europeans believed the world was their oyster.
However, this feeling was not to last. By the end of 1918, after four long years of war, European confidence was badly shaken. Ten million soldiers had died on the battle fields, another 20 million had been wounded. Empires that had lasted for centuries lay in ruin.
In the late 19th century European leaders believed that by creating a balance of power they could prevent large-scale war. The idea was that if the major powers of Europe ---countries like England, France, Russia, and Germany---- were balanced in strength, no one country could dominate the rest. War could be avoided.
Otto von Bismark, the Chancellor of Prussia who led the unification of the German states disliked the fact that Germany was sandwiched between Russia and France. To avoid war, Bismark made an alliance with Austria-Hungry and Italy which became known as the Triple Alliance. In response, France Russia and Great Britain formed their own alliance known as the Triple Entente.
On the surface, these alliances could be seen as a way to maintain a balance of power and thereby preserve peace but suspicions ran high. Political and military leaders spent countless hours developing plans in case a war began. Countries engaged in militarism---building up of arms, weapons, ships and men.
The tension between countries was matched by tension within countries. Especially in southeastern Europe, in an area known as the Balkans. In the Balkans, the spirit of nationalism and independence ran high. Some ethnic groups revolted. Out of the numerous dissatisfied ethnic groups, one emerged in Sarajevo, Bosnia called the Black Hand. They wanted independence from their mother country, Austria-Hungry and for all Serb people to have their own country. Their solution to the situation was to assassinate Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when he visited Sarajevo to make an inspection of the Austro-Hungarian troops. Seven young men who had been trained in bomb throwing and marksmanship were recruited to accomplish the task.
On June 28, 1914, Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife Sophie toured Sarajevo in an open car. Seven assassins were stationed along the route that Franz Ferdinand's car would follow from the City Hall to the inspection. The first two terrorists were unable to throw their grenades because the streets were too crowded and the car was travelling quite fast. The third terrorist, a young man called Cabrinovic, threw a grenade which exploded under the car following the Archduke’s car.
Although the Archduke and his wife were unhurt, some of his attendants were injured and had to be taken.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. THE ASSASSINATION OF THE ARCHDUKE Some time prior to the assassination, Bosnia had been taken from Turkey and given to Austria. Bosnians were Slavs who strongly resented being ruled by Austria. They wanted to be free. Some Bosnians formed a secret, nationalist group called The Black Hand – to fight for freedom. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand was nephew to the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, and heir to the throne. He would be the next Emperor of Austria-Hungary.
2. On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, were in Sarejevo, in Bosnia. He was inspecting the troops on the Bosnian / Serbian border. It was a national holiday in Bosnia. The Black Hand wanted to mark the holiday by killing the Archduke. They gave weapons to a group of students so they could assassinate him. Although the police were worried for the safety of Ferdinand, there were only a few on duty. The army did not seem to be concerned.
3. It was a sunny day, so the Duke and Duchess drove in an open car. The Archduke wore a blue jacket with gold and red trim. Everyone stopped to look at him and the 5 other cars filled with important dignatories. Cabrinovic, a member of the Black Hand, asked the police which car was the Duke’s. The police pointed to it. Cabrinovic pulled out a small bomb and threw it at the car. 20 people were hurt but not the Archduke or his wife.
4. Later on, the Archduke wanted to visit one of the wounded men. The driver of his car went the wrong way. He braked and started to go back. The car was in front of a shop called ‘Schillers’. Was the driver part of the conspiracy to kill the Archduke? Then, Gavrilo Princip stepped forward and fired at the car occupants, at point blank range.
5. The first bullet hit the Duchess Sophie and she died immediately. The second bullet hit the Archduke in the neck. He died minutes later.

7. SO, HOW DID THIS LEAD TO THE WHOLE WORLD BEING AT WAR ?
8. STEP 1 (28 July) Austria blamed Serbia (Bosnia’s neighbour) for the deaths of the Duke and Duchess. Austria said the Serbian Slavs had given guns to the Black Hand. Austria decided to crush Serbia once and for all, and on 28 July 1914, declared war on Serbia.
9. STEP 2 (30 July Serbia and Russia were allies, so, on 30 July, Russia declared war on Austria and called on France for help (Russian/French alliance). STEP 3 (1 August) Germany was worried that Russia would also attack her, plus Germany was allied to Austria, so on 1 August, Germany declared war on Russia. STEP 4 (3 August) Germany was sure France would help Russia, so on 3 August, Germany declared war on France.
10. STEP 5 Germany didn’t want to fight on two fronts, France in the West & Russia in the East. She wanted to defeat France quickly, so took a short-cut through neutral Belgium.
12. STEP 6 (4 August) Britain had a treaty with Belgium: If Belgium was attacked, Britain would fight. Therefore, on 4 August, Britain declared war on Germany. STEP 7 The rest of the world – South Africa and other colonies like Australia and Canada – joined the war voluntarily. They did not have to fight but thousands of them did. When America joined the war – much later – this helped to force Germany to surrender.
