- A high ranking official within an organization sees a new technology while visiting a partner location and says “we have to have this, it’s going to change the way we do business!” The official tasks IT with researching and deploying the solution, and the project is handed to a member of the IT team. That member researches the product. Listens to presentations from the various OEM’s and vendors. Looks over proposals and selects and a solution. Draws out a plan and, with the help of a vendor, deploys the product. Finally, the IT project manager sends out an email letting everyone know that the product is available and people can start to login and use the product immediately. Fast forward this situation six months in the future, and the same high level executive is furious because no one is utilizing the product and and the business process remains “status quo”.
- If that scenario sounds familiar, it’s because it plays itself out time and time again within todays enterprise and public sectors. If we look at some stats that were compiled by InfoWorld, we find that this trend happens more than we may think. The numbers tell us that 50% of all purchased technology is underutilized. 75% of licenses purchased go unused. A great example of this is within the collaboration market, where video is being used only 18% of the time that it is availble. To meeting attendees.
- This is not to say that these technologies don’t have incredible, transformational value when they are properly deployed. What we find is that there are barriers that occur between those who select and deploy the technology, and the end user population within the organization. Frances Harpst, a Change Management executive with GE & Cisco summed it up the best when she made this quote. Without the right partnerships in place within the lines of business, how can we move the needle and change business processes?
- And without that connection into the user population, you start to see negative feedback related to the products that have been deployed. Over the past year, we’ve tried to compile some of those statements that we have seen and heard from end users, everything from….
