It was proposed together with the creation
of International Monitoring Fund and
World Bank in 1944 post world war II
negotiations.
General Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade
GATT was a multilateral agreement regulating
international trade. Its purpose was the "significant
reduction of tariffs and other trade barriers and the
elimination of preferences.ā€

PRINCIPLES OF WTO
ā€¢ Trade Without Discrimination
1. Most-favoured-nation (MFN): treating other
people equallyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā UnderĀ  theĀ  WTOĀ  agreements,Ā
countriesĀ  cannotĀ  normallyĀ  discriminateĀ  betweenĀ  theirĀ
tradingĀ partners.Ā GrantĀ someoneĀ aĀ specialĀ favourĀ (suchĀ
asĀ aĀ lowerĀ customsĀ dutyĀ rateĀ forĀ oneĀ ofĀ theirĀ products)Ā
andĀ  youĀ  haveĀ  toĀ  doĀ  theĀ  sameĀ  forĀ  allĀ  otherĀ  WTOĀ
members.
2. National treatment: Treating foreigners and locals
equallyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ImportedĀ  andĀ  locally-producedĀ  goodsĀ
shouldĀ  beĀ  treatedĀ  equally,Ā  atĀ  leastĀ  afterĀ  theĀ  foreignĀ
goodsĀ haveĀ enteredĀ theĀ market.Ā TheĀ sameĀ shouldĀ applyĀ
toĀ  foreignĀ  andĀ  domesticĀ  servicesĀ  andĀ  toĀ  foreignĀ  andĀ
localĀ trademarks,Ā copyrightsĀ andĀ patents.Ā
Con...

ā€¢ Free trade: gradually, through negotiation
Ā Ā Ā Ā LoweringĀ tradeĀ barriersĀ isĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ mostĀ obviousĀ meansĀ ofĀ
encouragingĀ  trade.Ā  TheĀ  barriersĀ  concernedĀ  includeĀ  customsĀ
dutiesĀ (orĀ tariffs)Ā andĀ measuresĀ suchĀ asĀ importĀ bansĀ orĀ quotasĀ
thatĀ restrictĀ quantitiesĀ selectively
ā€¢ Predictability: through binding and transparency
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Sometimes,Ā  promisingĀ  notĀ  toĀ  raiseĀ  aĀ  tradeĀ  barrierĀ  canĀ  beĀ  asĀ
importantĀ  asĀ  loweringĀ  one,Ā  becauseĀ  theĀ  promiseĀ  givesĀ
businessesĀ  aĀ  clearerĀ  viewĀ  ofĀ  theirĀ  futureĀ  opportunities.Ā  TheĀ
multilateralĀ  tradingĀ  systemĀ  isĀ  anĀ  attemptĀ  byĀ  governmentsĀ  toĀ
makeĀ theĀ businessĀ environmentĀ stableĀ andĀ pre

dictable.
Con...
ā€¢ Promoting fair competition
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  TheĀ  WTOĀ  isĀ  sometimesĀ  describedĀ  asĀ  aĀ  ā€œfreeĀ  tradeā€Ā
institution,Ā butĀ thatĀ isĀ notĀ entirelyĀ accurate.Ā TheĀ systemĀ
doesĀ  allowĀ  tariffsĀ  and,Ā  inĀ  limitedĀ  circumstances,Ā  otherĀ
formsĀ ofĀ protection.Ā MoreĀ accurately,Ā itĀ isĀ aĀ systemĀ ofĀ
rulesĀ dedicatedĀ toĀ open,Ā fairĀ andĀ accurateĀ competition.
ā€¢ Encouraging development and economic reform.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā TheĀ WTOĀ systemĀ contributesĀ toĀ development.Ā OnĀ theĀ
otherĀ hand,Ā developingĀ countriesĀ needĀ flexibilityĀ inĀ theĀ
timeĀ theyĀ takeĀ toĀ implementĀ theĀ systemā€™sĀ agreements.Ā
ROLE OF WTO
ā€¢ TheĀ mainĀ goalĀ ofĀ WTOĀ isĀ toĀ helpĀ theĀ tradingĀ industryĀ
toĀ  becomeĀ  smooth,Ā  fair,Ā  freeĀ  andĀ  predictable..Ā  ItĀ  alsoĀ
triesĀ toĀ resolveĀ tradeĀ disputesĀ betweenĀ memberĀ nations.
ā€¢ Multi-lateralĀ  agreementsĀ  areĀ  alwaysĀ  madeĀ  betweenĀ
severalĀ  countriesĀ  inĀ  theĀ  past.Ā  BecauseĀ  ofĀ  this,Ā  suchĀ
agreementsĀ  becomeĀ  veryĀ  difficultĀ  toĀ  negotiateĀ  butĀ  areĀ
soĀ powerfulĀ andĀ leadingĀ onceĀ allĀ theĀ partiesĀ agreeĀ andĀ
signĀ  theĀ  multi-lateralĀ  agreement.Ā  WTOĀ  actsĀ  asĀ  theĀ
administrator.Ā  IfĀ  thereĀ  areĀ  unfairĀ  tradeĀ  practicesĀ  orĀ
dumpingĀ andĀ thereĀ isĀ complainĀ filed,Ā theĀ staffĀ ofĀ WTOĀ
areĀ  expectedĀ  toĀ  investigateĀ  andĀ  checkĀ  ifĀ  thereĀ  areĀ
violationsĀ basedĀ onĀ theĀ multi-lateralĀ agreements.Ā
TRIMs AND TRIPS
1)Ā  AgreementĀ  onĀ  Trade-RelatedĀ  InvestmentĀ  MeasuresĀ
(TRIMs)Ā
ā€¢ TRIMsĀ  refersĀ  toĀ  certainĀ  conditionsĀ  orĀ  restrictionsĀ
imposedĀ  byĀ  aĀ  governmentsĀ  inĀ  respectĀ  ofĀ  foreignĀ
investmentĀ inĀ theĀ country
ā€¢ TheĀ agreementĀ onĀ TRIMsĀ providesĀ thatĀ noĀ contractingĀ
partyĀ shallĀ applyĀ anyĀ TRIMĀ whichĀ isĀ inconsistentĀ withĀ
theĀ WTOĀ Articles.
Conā€¦
2)AgreementĀ  onĀ  Trade-RelatedĀ  AspectsĀ  ofĀ  IntellectualĀ
PropertyĀ RightsĀ (TRIPS)Ā
ā€¢ TRIPSĀ  containĀ  requirementsĀ  thatĀ  nations'Ā  lawsĀ  mustĀ
meetĀ  forĀ  copyrightĀ  rights,Ā  includingĀ  theĀ  rightsĀ  ofĀ
performers,;Ā  geographicalĀ  indications,Ā  industrialĀ
designs,Ā  patents,Ā  trademarksĀ  andĀ  undisclosedĀ  orĀ
confidentialĀ information.
ā€¢ ItĀ  specifiesĀ  enforcementĀ  procedures,Ā  remedies,Ā  andĀ
disputeĀ resolutionĀ procedures.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WTO
ā€¢ TheĀ systemĀ helpsĀ promoteĀ peace.
ā€¢ TheĀ  systemĀ  allowsĀ  disputesĀ  toĀ  beĀ  handledĀ
beneficially.
ā€¢ AĀ systemĀ basedĀ onĀ rulesĀ ratherĀ thanĀ powerĀ makesĀ
lifeĀ easierĀ forĀ all.
ā€¢ ItĀ  givesĀ  consumersĀ  moreĀ  choiceĀ  andĀ  aĀ  broaderĀ
rangeĀ ofĀ qualitiesĀ toĀ chooseĀ from.
ā€¢ TradeĀ raisesĀ incomes.
ā€¢ TradeĀ stimulatesĀ economicĀ growthĀ andĀ thatĀ canĀ beĀ
goodĀ newsĀ forĀ employment.
ā€¢ TheĀ  basicĀ  principlesĀ  makeĀ  theĀ  systemĀ
economicallyĀ moreĀ efficient,Ā andĀ theyĀ cutĀ costs.

CONCLUSION
ā€¢ It is the place where the member country comes and
talks together and shares their grievance in order to
resolve their problem related to International trade.
ā€¢ The countries make their decisions through various
councils and committees, whose membership consists
of all WTO members.
ā€¢ The system helps promote peace, by handling Dispute
of member countries. It provides free trade which cuts
the costs of living and provides more choice of
products and qualities and stimulates economic growth.

  • 21. PRINCIPLES OF WTO ā€¢ Trade Without Discrimination 1. Most-favoured-nation (MFN): treating other people equallyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā UnderĀ  theĀ  WTOĀ  agreements,Ā  countriesĀ  cannotĀ  normallyĀ  discriminateĀ  betweenĀ  theirĀ  tradingĀ partners.Ā GrantĀ someoneĀ aĀ specialĀ favourĀ (suchĀ  asĀ aĀ lowerĀ customsĀ dutyĀ rateĀ forĀ oneĀ ofĀ theirĀ products)Ā  andĀ  youĀ  haveĀ  toĀ  doĀ  theĀ  sameĀ  forĀ  allĀ  otherĀ  WTOĀ  members. 2. National treatment: Treating foreigners and locals equallyĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ImportedĀ  andĀ  locally-producedĀ  goodsĀ  shouldĀ  beĀ  treatedĀ  equally,Ā  atĀ  leastĀ  afterĀ  theĀ  foreignĀ  goodsĀ haveĀ enteredĀ theĀ market.Ā TheĀ sameĀ shouldĀ applyĀ  toĀ  foreignĀ  andĀ  domesticĀ  servicesĀ  andĀ  toĀ  foreignĀ  andĀ  localĀ trademarks,Ā copyrightsĀ andĀ patents.Ā
  • 22. Con... ā€¢ Free trade: gradually, through negotiation Ā Ā Ā Ā LoweringĀ tradeĀ barriersĀ isĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ mostĀ obviousĀ meansĀ ofĀ  encouragingĀ  trade.Ā  TheĀ  barriersĀ  concernedĀ  includeĀ  customsĀ  dutiesĀ (orĀ tariffs)Ā andĀ measuresĀ suchĀ asĀ importĀ bansĀ orĀ quotasĀ  thatĀ restrictĀ quantitiesĀ selectively ā€¢ Predictability: through binding and transparency Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Sometimes,Ā  promisingĀ  notĀ  toĀ  raiseĀ  aĀ  tradeĀ  barrierĀ  canĀ  beĀ  asĀ  importantĀ  asĀ  loweringĀ  one,Ā  becauseĀ  theĀ  promiseĀ  givesĀ  businessesĀ  aĀ  clearerĀ  viewĀ  ofĀ  theirĀ  futureĀ  opportunities.Ā  TheĀ  multilateralĀ  tradingĀ  systemĀ  isĀ  anĀ  attemptĀ  byĀ  governmentsĀ  toĀ  makeĀ theĀ businessĀ environmentĀ stableĀ andĀ pre dictable.
  • 23. Con... ā€¢ Promoting fair competition Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  TheĀ  WTOĀ  isĀ  sometimesĀ  describedĀ  asĀ  aĀ  ā€œfreeĀ  tradeā€Ā  institution,Ā butĀ thatĀ isĀ notĀ entirelyĀ accurate.Ā TheĀ systemĀ  doesĀ  allowĀ  tariffsĀ  and,Ā  inĀ  limitedĀ  circumstances,Ā  otherĀ  formsĀ ofĀ protection.Ā MoreĀ accurately,Ā itĀ isĀ aĀ systemĀ ofĀ  rulesĀ dedicatedĀ toĀ open,Ā fairĀ andĀ accurateĀ competition. ā€¢ Encouraging development and economic reform. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā TheĀ WTOĀ systemĀ contributesĀ toĀ development.Ā OnĀ theĀ  otherĀ hand,Ā developingĀ countriesĀ needĀ flexibilityĀ inĀ theĀ  timeĀ theyĀ takeĀ toĀ implementĀ theĀ systemā€™sĀ agreements.Ā
  • 24. ROLE OF WTO ā€¢ TheĀ mainĀ goalĀ ofĀ WTOĀ isĀ toĀ helpĀ theĀ tradingĀ industryĀ  toĀ  becomeĀ  smooth,Ā  fair,Ā  freeĀ  andĀ  predictable..Ā  ItĀ  alsoĀ  triesĀ toĀ resolveĀ tradeĀ disputesĀ betweenĀ memberĀ nations. ā€¢ Multi-lateralĀ  agreementsĀ  areĀ  alwaysĀ  madeĀ  betweenĀ  severalĀ  countriesĀ  inĀ  theĀ  past.Ā  BecauseĀ  ofĀ  this,Ā  suchĀ  agreementsĀ  becomeĀ  veryĀ  difficultĀ  toĀ  negotiateĀ  butĀ  areĀ  soĀ powerfulĀ andĀ leadingĀ onceĀ allĀ theĀ partiesĀ agreeĀ andĀ  signĀ  theĀ  multi-lateralĀ  agreement.Ā  WTOĀ  actsĀ  asĀ  theĀ  administrator.Ā  IfĀ  thereĀ  areĀ  unfairĀ  tradeĀ  practicesĀ  orĀ  dumpingĀ andĀ thereĀ isĀ complainĀ filed,Ā theĀ staffĀ ofĀ WTOĀ  areĀ  expectedĀ  toĀ  investigateĀ  andĀ  checkĀ  ifĀ  thereĀ  areĀ  violationsĀ basedĀ onĀ theĀ multi-lateralĀ agreements.Ā
