This presentation formed the basis of a webinar delivered through the Community Networks of Specialized Care. The presenter is Keenan Wellar, co-leader and director of communications at LiveWorkPlay in Ottawa. Attending directly and remotely were representatives from about 20 organizations across Ontario.
From 2008-2010, the LiveWorkPlay charitable organization in Ottawa engaged in a successful process of "de-programming" by completing a shift from congregated programs to authentic community-based supports and outcomes based on flexible and individualized person-centered planning. They have been living this new way of being for the past three years and will share what they have learned, with a particular focus on life-changing outcomes for individuals who have an intellectual disability, as well as a "social capital" approach to partnerships with citizens and organizations in support of a more inclusive community.
This is a set of slides used for a full days talk to social work students. It explores the moral purpose of social work, the meaning of social justice and citizenship and some of the practical and political issues confronting social workers today. The course includes an exercise encouraging people to see the disconnection between our own expectations the reality of social care systems. The course was developed by Dr Simon Duffy and has been run for several years at Huddersfield and Hertfordshire Universities.

NHS Improving Quality undertook a scoping exercise of rehabilitation services, which included:
Identification of the different practice models illustrated through case studies looking at integrated models of adult rehabilitation service provision
A high level baseline mapping exercise of the current availability of adult rehabilitation services across England.
NHS Improving Quality also assisted in capturing the views from key stakeholders by supporting and facilitating a series of stakeholder engagement events hosted by NHS England.These events aimed to develop and agree principles and expectations to underpin high quality rehabilitation services.
Split Bill Payment System for pooling funds from several parties . A process and software system for carrying out transactions which involve a large pool of stakeholders .

With so many new ways of thinking & working around – co production, person centred approaches, asset based community development, strengths based approaches, community capacity - sometimes it's hard for people who work in services, as well as the people and families they support, to work out what it those mean to their practice. This webinar will focus on the practical values driven implementation of co production – the long term relationship, shifting power but building on all contributions.
Topic 2: Transforming Care and Building the Right Support – the CQC approach to registering services for adults with learning disabilities

This webinar will be an opportunity for commissioners to consider the CQC policy on registering providers who apply to deliver services for adults with learning disabilities. The policy is called ‘Registering the Right Support’ and outlines the factors we will consider in both approving and refusing applications for either new services or changes in existing services. We will consider specific issues, such as applications to change the registration of a hospital ward or unit, to register large or congregate services or to increase the size of an existing location. These factors are all important when commissioners are developing their plans under the Transforming Care program, and the webinar will enable discussion and questions about the registration approach and process.

This chapter is dedicated to the development of basic definitions that describe and identify human services. However, any attempt to define human services in one sentence, or to use one description, is doomed to fail. According to Schmolling, Youkeles, and Burger, there is no generally accepted or “official” definition of human services (, p. 9). Human services is a multidisciplinary profession that reflects complex human interactions and a comprehensive social system. To understand human services, it is important to develop ideas that construct an organized perspective of the field. In this chapter, three general questions about human services are incorporated into the text. First, “What is it, and what isn’t it?” Second, “Who is helped and why?” Third, “How is help delivered and by whom?” These fundamental questions tend to exemplify the basic concepts and definitions in human services. This chapter proceeds to introduce important terms, definitions, subconcepts, and concentration areas in human services, which are expounded upon by a host of authors who have contributed their expertise to create this book.
The professional field of human services can be reduced to three basic concepts: intervention (needs and services); professionalism (applied practice and credentialing); and education (academic training and research). Each basic concept comprises important aspects of the human service field and identifies primary areas of the profession. The supporting background that nourishes intervention, professionalism, and education in human services is the history of the human service movement (Fullerton, ). The formal development of human services in society is located in the legislative, training, and service history of the field. This chapter attempts to offer a collective understanding of these important areas related to the professional development of human services. In this chapter, basic concepts and definitions converge to generate a comprehensive and theoretical notion of human services in forming an overview of the field. To further assist the reader in developing thoughts about the human service profession, and to avoid ambiguity in the field, a medley of contemporary definitions of human services is presented later in the chapter.
Finally, an important letter written by Dr. Harold McPheeters in 1992, which addresses the basic question of what comprises human services, is presented to close the chapter. McPheeters’s letter was sent in response to a manuscript written by me in 1991. The paper proposes an idealistic model that defines human services in terms of its purpose and professional responsibility in society. Later in the chapter, the central ideas are summarized, providing an orientation to the thoughtful feedback from Harold McPheeters. worse, and there is absolutely no way I'm fit to work at present…..But
because the government has chosen the biopsychosocial model, there's a
very real risk that after a year I'll be forced onto Jobseeker's Allowance: and
face having it removed if I don't turn up for interviews because I'm unable to
get out of bed.”

28. the privileges of personalisation
• the choice, control and autonomy proposed and
long promised through “personalisation” seem to
represent a set of privileges rather than a set of
rights
• a set of privileges variously afforded or
denied, allocated or withdrawn in the absence of
consistent criteria
• a set of privileges determined by professionals
not acting on behalf of the “person”, but acting
on behalf of the state through the apparatus of
local government

• it’s not acceptable that the basic freedoms
personalisation encompasses –
participation, control, choice, self-
determination, equally valued citizenship, the
power to make informed decisions about your
own life – should be in the gift of others or of the
state
• these are rights - not privileges
• and in the absence of these rights being
respected by the system it is necessary for them
to be asserted and claimed

non-disabled people
