The document provides a five-step formula for writing an introductory paragraph and evaluates seven example introductory paragraphs according to the formula. The examples introduce plays by Shakespeare ("Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth") and assess how well each follows the formula and sets up an effective response to the essay question about a play with a memorable opening section. The best examples are 2 and 7, as they clearly identify the text and author, summarize the opening section, and preview how the essay will address the characters and themes.
Othello (The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice) is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio (a disciple of Boccaccio's), first published in 1565.[2] The story revolves around its two central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and his treacherous ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.

"I remember an old girlfriend of Ian Fleming's saying: ‘Ian was like one of the characters in the plays of that major 19th-century Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen; that character was always waiting for something wunderbar to happen to him.’ Readers will find this remark in John Pearson's 500 page biography The Life of Ian Fleming. "I think The Bond Books function as the dream autobiography of this man," writes Pearson.
There have already been several stabs at dramatising this famous writer’s life, including two television films from 1989 and 1990, the first starring Charles Dance, the second Jason Connery. But Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond, a co-production between Sky-Atlantic and BBC America, is the most opulent yet.1 Sky Atlantic is a television channel owned by British Sky Broadcasting. This channel was launched on 1 February 2011 on Sky in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is this docudrama that I have just enjoyed involving, as it does, a look at the life of Ian Fleming from when he was in the UK's naval intelligence as a commander until his death in 1964. It gives an insight into what Fleming was really like, and how he came to write his Bond novels. I watched the two episodes in the first 10 days of November 2014.2

Step One: Summarizing
Based on the novel “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare: Exposition in the drama presents characters where the scene begins with a feud from two families the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo is Montagues son who seeks to attend a party in disguise at the Capulet family where Juliet is supposed to marry Paris. Rising action: Here the plot of scene is the heated fight Mercuito and Tybalt who kills him and later Romeo killed Tybalt. Romeo makes issues more complex and Romeo is banished, (NOURANI, 2019). The climax in the drama is short where Juliet is urging Romeo to flee but Romeo says goodbye.
Step Two: Responding
Personally, I believe that the scenes that happened in the rising action because most of the drama from the two families is experienced a great deal. The climax is not in the middle of the story rather it’s experienced at the end of the plot where Romeo buys poison to kill himself because Juliet was dead after finding the truth from his servant. The final death scene is where the climax lies because the characters are separated by death.
Step Three: Analysing
The main problem facing the main character in the “Romeo and Juliet” the two main characters are Romeo and Juliet who comes from families that hate each other and the main problem they face is conflict. The Capulets and the Montagues have family feuds that lead to the deaths of their children, (William, 2017). The love between the two characters is forbidden which creates matters worst between the two families.
The symbols used by Shakespeare in the play include poison which symbolizes the feud that existed between the two families and the love between Romeo and Juliet was a poison that led to the death of Mercuito and Tybalt. Apothecary sells poison which symbolizes that the society drives people commit suicides because the world is unbearable. Light and Darkness is another symbol in the novel where characters like Romeo, Juliet and Mercuito have good qualities of goodness which is displayed in broad daylight while characters like Lord Capulet and Paris are evil in the dark. Their relationship flourished at night and at the tomb Romeo uses darkness and light as Juliet acts as light in the darkness of the tomb through her beauty.
The main themes embedded in the play includes individual vs. society: Romeo and Juliet struggle with their love against the family customs leading to family feuds. They were in love with each other and against their families. They wanted to break the society norms and customs to be together. Death is also a major theme throughout the scenes where Mercuito and Tybalt die in fights instigated by conflict. The two lovers also end up dead and bring the conflict because the untimely events act a resolution to the two families. Love between Romeo and Juliet is so authentic and they are passionate for one another despite the social constraints they experienced. Patriarchy is dem ...
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2. Here’s the ‘formula’—copy it down! identify the text and author use words from the beginning of the question and explain why the chosen text is a suitable one to choose for the question include a sentence or two summarising the text (but no more than a sentence or two) and identify the central concern(s) refer to the words which set the task in the second sentence of the question give an idea of how the rest of the essay is going to develop in order to fulfil the task
3. Here are some introductory paragraphs written by Higher English candidates in answer to the following question: Choose a play which you feel has a memorable opening section. Show how the content or the atmosphere of the scene or section provides an effective starting point for the development of the characters and the theme of the play. (Write the question down; you’ll need it later)
4. The question paper also contains the following instructions: Answers to questions on drama should address relevantly the central concern(s)/theme(s) of the text(s) and be supported by reference to appropriate dramatic techniques such as: conflict, characterisation, key scene(s), dialogue, climax, exposition, dénouement, structure, plot, setting, aspects of staging, soliloquy, monologue . . .
5. ACTIVITY Discuss how effective each of the following seven examples would be as the opening paragraph for an essay in answer to the question above. Summarise your findings in a table as follows.
6. 1 A play that has a memorable opening section is ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The memorable opening section is the prologue. The prologue tells the reader of the outcome of the play in advance. This provides an effective starting point for the development of the characters and the theme of the play.
7. 2 A play that has a memorable opening section is ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare. The opening section takes the form of a prologue which summarises the whole play by telling the audience that it traces the story of two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who belong to opposing families, the Montagues and Capulets, who are locked in a bitter feud in the medieval Italian city of Verona. By announcing in advance that the play will end with the death of the lovers, the prologue introduces the theme of fate which determines the development of the tragedy.
8. 3 ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a tragic love story about two young lovers who lived in Verona in Italy in the Middle Ages. Romeo belongs to the Montague family while Juliet is a Capulet and their parents would not allow them to associate with each other as the families are bitter enemies. The opening of the play is memorable because there is a fight. The feud between the families has lasted for centuries. One member of the Capulet family, Tybalt, wants to keep the feud going but Romeo is not interested because he is in love with Juliet. One of the turning points in the play is in Act Three where Romeo is drawn into a fight against his will and kills Tybalt. This is also a memorable part of the play.
9. 4 ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare tells the story of a feud between two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. However, some of the Montagues gatecrash a party at the Capulets’ house and there Romeo falls in love with Juliet. They fall in love immediately but keep this secret as their parents disapprove. Fights between the two opposing families are constantly breaking out and Romeo kills Tybalt, leading to him being banished from Verona as a punishment. The two lovers were secretly married by Friar Lawrence and they turn to him for help. He gives Juliet a special drug that makes it look as if she has died but Romeo arrives before she wakes up and kills himself because he thinks she is dead. She then wakes up and commits suicide too.
10. 5 ‘Macbeth’ has a memorable opening because he meets the witches. He is a very ambitious man and his wife persuades him to kill King Duncan and make himself king. However, he feels guilty about this and his conscience troubles him: ‘Macbeth shall sleep no more.’ Later he hires murders to kill his friend Banquo and, towards the end of the play, has MacDuff’s family killed too. At the end of the story King Duncan’s son Malcolm becomes king. The play was written by William Shakespeare.
11. 6 After seeing the film of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ starring Leonardo diCaprio and Claire Danes I couldn’t wait to read the play itself. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is one of the world’s most romantic love stories. Although Shakespeare wrote it in the sixteen century it can still be enjoyed by an audience today.
12. 7 A play which has a memorable opening is William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. By introducing the audience to three witches, the first scene immediately establishes an atmosphere of evil, confusion and mystery. The fact that the witches mention Macbeth already implies that they will have some connection with this character and foreshadows the development of evil within him that is a key theme of the play.
13. Could YOU do better? Write your own, using the 5-step formula: identify the text and author use words from the beginning of the question and explain why the chosen text is a suitable one to choose for the question include a sentence or two summarising the text (but no more than a sentence or two) refer to the words which set the task in the second sentence of the question give an idea of how the rest of the essay is going to develop in order to fulfil the task
