Anthony Kobak has borrowed the
mayor's Ford Taurus for a spin around
Youngstown, but as he steers the sedan
down a pitted asphalt road, he wishes he'd
borrowed a Jeep instead. Driving comes
pretty dose to off-roading in this part of
Youngstown's east side, where the sur-
roundings are mostly fallow lots and a few
scattered homes. Kobak stops at one street
that is little more than a dirt path into the
woods. But it is a city-maintained road all the
same, with water, sewer and power lines.
"We're just io minutes from downtown, but
you can see it's very rural," says Kobak, who
is Youngstown's chief planner. He points
out the window toward a lone deteriorating
house in a field. "Those are chicken coops
over there. You can see the cages."
This part of Youngstown is called
Sharon Line-the name, Kobak explains,
came from a street car route that used to run
through the area. Back in the 195os, this
place was expected to develop into a
bustling urban neighborhood. The steel
mills were still roaring, and with 17o,ooo
residents, Youngstownwas Ohio's seventh-
largest city and the 57 th most populous in
the United States. Planners believed that
the east side would soak up continuing
growth and prosperity. What in fact hap-
pened was quite the opposite. Not only did
suburbanization suck the life out of city
neighborhoods, as happened in much of
America, but in the 197os, the steel mills
dosed and population went into a free-fall.
Quite suddenly, Youngstown's growth
problem had turned into an abandoned-
property problem. In Sharon Line, new
houses simply weren't needed anymore.
The area remained an odd country enclave
tucked inside a fast-dedining city.
Now, Kobak and other Youngstown of-
ficials have come around to a drastically dif-
ferent vision for Sharon Line. No longer are
they holding out for a mirade growth spurt.
Rather, they're embracing the radical idea
of gradually turning this place back to na-
ture. Roads and infrastructure may be taken
out of service. Some properties could be
converted to wetlands. Kobak calls this way
of thinking "going from gray to green,"

seated by a snowstorm. A blizzard in January of 1979
dumped some 20 inches on the ground, causing,
among other problems, a curtailment of transit ser-
vice. The few available trains coming downtown from
the northwest side filled up with middle-class white riders near
the far end of the line, leaving no room for poorer people try-
ing to board on inner-city platforms. African Americans and
Hispanics blamed this on Mayor Michael Bilandic, and he lost
the Democratic primary to Jane Byrne a few weeks later.
Today, this could never happen. Not because of climate
change, or because the Chicago Transit Authority now runs
flawlessly. It couldn’t happen because the trains would fill up
with minorities and immigrants on the outskirts of the city,
and the passengers left stranded at the inner-city stations
would be members of the affluent professional class.
In the past three decades, Chicago has undergone changes
that are routinely described as gentrification, but are in fact
more complicated and more profound than the process that
term suggests. A better description would be “demographic
inversion.” Chicago is gradually coming to resemble a tra-
ditional European city—Vienna or Paris in the nineteenth
century, or, for that matter, Paris today. The poor and the
newcomers are living on the outskirts. The people who live
near the center—some of them black or Hispanic but most of
them white—are those who can afford to do so.
Developments like this rarely occur in one city at a time,
and indeed demographic inversion is taking place, albeit more
slowly than in Chicago, in metropolitan areas throughout the
country. The national press has paid very little attention to it.
While we have been focusing on Baghdad and Kabul, our own
cities have been changing right in front of us.
Atlanta, for example, is shifting from an overwhelmingly
black to what is likely to soon be a minority-black city. This
is happening in part because the white middle class is moving
inside the city borders, but more so because blacks are mov-
ing out. Between 1990 and 2006, according to research by Wil-
liam Frey of the Brookings Institution, the white population of
Atlanta has increased from roughly 30 percent to 35 percent
while the black population has declined from 67 percent to 55
percent. In this decade alone, two of Atlanta’s huge suburban
counties, Clayton and DeKalb, have acquired substantial black
majorities, and immigrants arriving from foreign countries are
settling primarily there or in similar outlying areas, not within
the city itself. The numbers for Washington, D.C. are similar.

This is located near a lake which is in the northern part of the country. This is a town covers an area of approximately 8540 km2
Population
The town’s population is approximately 26,710 persons. This population is evenly distributed in the land covered by the town.
A brief history
This town was found around the basis of the healing powers of the waters emerging from one of the springs near the lake. It started with a small group of individuals who have been growing since 1879 to date. The first healing incident was of a leg problem of a passer-by who then spread the news about the ‘healing waters’. From then the area has experienced rapid growth into a small town. The economic distribution was, however, uneven as the springs attracted the rich individuals while the outskirts were left for the poor ones. The town attracted a large of investors who were excited by the thought of exploring new towns.
However, the trend did not hold for this town as the emergence of modern medicine reduced the influence of the spring. The town’s economy declined a bit. However, it picked up again in the 1920s when tourism came up and automobiles improved transportation systems. The town was then hit the great depression, and world war II. It, however, survived all the setbacks and attacked more tourists.

The population estimates for the town as the population estimates of 2019 are 26710 which a decline from 27,191 in 2010. The town has, therefore, registered – 1.8% population growth.
Most of the population is aged between 18 and 64 years. Only 18% is below 18 years and the population below 5 years is 6.1%. Females make the better part of the population with of percentage of 49.6. This is almost half the population of the town. The town is made of mixture races but the dominant race is the whites while the least in the town are the African Americans. The communities in the town include whites, African Americans, Indian Americans, Asians and Hispanic(Loy & Coleman, 2006)

seated by a snowstorm. A blizzard in January of 1979
dumped some 20 inches on the ground, causing,
among other problems, a curtailment of transit ser-
vice. The few available trains coming downtown from
the northwest side filled up with middle-class white riders near
the far end of the line, leaving no room for poorer people try-
ing to board on inner-city platforms. African Americans and
Hispanics blamed this on Mayor Michael Bilandic, and he lost
the Democratic primary to Jane Byrne a few weeks later.
Today, this could never happen. Not because of climate
change, or because the Chicago Transit Authority now runs
flawlessly. It couldn’t happen because the trains would fill up
with minorities and immigrants on the outskirts of the city,
and the passengers left stranded at the inner-city stations
would be members of the affluent professional class.
In the past three decades, Chicago has undergone changes
that are routinely described as gentrification, but are in fact
more complicated and more profound than the process that
term suggests. A better description would be “demographic
inversion.” Chicago is gradually coming to resemble a tra-
ditional European city—Vienna or Paris in the nineteenth
century, or, for that matter, Paris today. The poor and the
newcomers are living on the outskirts. The people who live
near the center—some of them black or Hispanic but most of
them white—are those who can afford to do so.
Developments like this rarely occur in one city at a time,
and indeed demographic inversion is taking place, albeit more
slowly than in Chicago, in metropolitan areas throughout the
country. The national press has paid very little attention to it.
While we have been focusing on Baghdad and Kabul, our own
cities have been changing right in front of us.
Atlanta, for example, is shifting from an overwhelmingly
black to what is likely to soon be a minority-black city. This
is happening in part because the white middle class is moving
inside the city borders, but more so because blacks are mov-
ing out. Between 1990 and 2006, according to research by Wil-
liam Frey of the Brookings Institution, the white population of
Atlanta has increased from roughly 30 percent to 35 percent
while the black population has declined from 67 percent to 55
percent. In this decade alone, two of Atlanta’s huge suburban
counties, Clayton and DeKalb, have acquired substantial black
majorities, and immigrants arriving from foreign countries are
settling primarily there or in similar outlying areas, not within
the city itself. The numbers for Washington, D.C. are similar.

The community selected for study is a small town in the United States. This town is one of the oldest ones in the region. The description of the aggregate is as follows

Geographical location and size
This is located near a lake which is in the northern part of the country. This is a town covers an area of approximately 8540 km2
Population
The town’s population is approximately 26,710 persons. This population is evenly distributed in the land covered by the town.
A brief history
This town was found around the basis of the healing powers of the waters emerging from one of the springs near the lake. It started with a small group of individuals who have been growing since 1879 to date. The first healing incident was of a leg problem of a passer-by who then spread the news about the ‘healing waters’. From then the area has experienced rapid growth into a small town. The economic distribution was, however, uneven as the springs attracted the rich individuals while the outskirts were left for the poor ones. The town attracted a large of investors who were excited by the thought of exploring new towns.
However, the trend did not hold for this town as the emergence of modern medicine reduced the influence of the spring. The town’s economy declined a bit. However, it picked up again in the 1920s when tourism came up and automobiles improved transportation systems. The town was then hit the great depression, and world war II. It, however, survived all the setbacks and attacked more tourists.
Basic vital statistics
The population estimates for the town as the population estimates of 2019 are 26710 which a decline from 27,191 in 2010. The town has, therefore, registered – 1.8% population growth.
Most of the population is aged between 18 and 64 years. Only 18% is below 18 years and the population below 5 years is 6.1%. Females make the better part of the population with of percentage of 49.6. This is almost half the population of the town. The town is made of mixture races but the dominant race is the whites while the least in the town are the African Americans. The communities in the town include whites, African Americans, Indian Americans, Asians and Hispanic(Loy & Coleman, 2006)

Christine Edwards “The Growing Pains of a City” When reading the collection of essays in Charlotte, NC: The Global Evolution of a New South City1, the reader becomes intrigued about the rate at which globalization is changing the small country town of Charlotte, North Carolina. It is important to understand that Charlotte has seen growth of 28% between 1990 and 2000. As of July 2009, the city has seen a 31% population increase with an estimated population of now 709,441.2 This growth is matched with an influx of racial and ethnic diversity. How these factors interact with economic development contribute to Charlotte’s global economy and its status as a global city. More and more Fortune 500 companies find Charlotte to be an adequate home. With the major local university, UNC Charlotte, creating more degree programs, Charlotte has become a city with growing intellectual and financial resources. With all of this change, Charlotte has had little time to adjust and establish an identity of its own. Will the city maintain its southern charm and will it continue progressive growth while still honoring the memories of past racial injustices of the south? With the efforts of city planners matched with the diverse values of city residents, Charlotte was able to become a stable, dynamic and cultured southern city. In a few short years, it has become a destination city, not just another dot on the map between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Charlotte, with its centralized downtown area and surrounding historical neighborhoods, can be compared to other urban areas like Atlanta. It changed from a southern mill town to a town with a creative class of workers coming from banking, distribution, energy, and financial areas. Because of the diverse population, some areas of the city have even become pockets for distinct Latino or Asian cultures. Further, many Charlotte residents migrated from the Northeast or Midwest parts of the country. Because of this, Charlotte’s values consist of business interests rather than preserving southern charm or responding diplomatically to inequality. Charlotte city government and local non-profit leaders are making significant measures to address the latter issues. The local chapter of the NAACP attempts to keep African American interests in the forefront. 3 Local housing policies attempt to disperse low-income housing among different areas of the city to make available better resources to a greater number of people. Like bigger urban regions, the apprehension for Charlotte leaders is that growth can lead to disparity. What will keep Charlotte from gentrification and a disenfranchised gap of citizens much like in Chicago or New York? The title of this analysis, Growing Pains, implies the difficulties that come along with city growth. Disparity and cultural segregation can be results of city growth. Gentrification is a feature of urban areas but should not be the end to a means. Although Charlotte planners have displaced residents of revitalized neighborhoods in the past, they are actively redeveloping older neighborhoods to keep the traditional style of living while making the areas a bit more modern4. These planners’ efforts depict the difficulty in balancing the values of economic growth and traditional neighborhoods. Despite value conflicts of public interests vs. business interests, economic investments bring more jobs to Mecklenburg County. More recreation and entertainment attractions not only make the city a nice place to visit but also a nice place to live. Most recently, the decision to have Charlotte host the Democratic National Convention in 2012, is a boost to the city’s confidence. The values associated with this convention, job creation, equal education, health care reform, and sustainable energy will bring residents together to affect change. This matched with impeccable leadership strategies will allow charlotte to continue to grow in this very unique way.
