Writing an equation in Vertex Form By: Alicia Russ
Things you need to get started The first thing you need is to pick a vertex which is the highest or lowest point and second is pick a point. Most of the time the vertex and point will be given to you. You need to use this equation y= a(x-h)square + k When you have an equation such as v(9,11) pt(4,7) you h is the first number of the vertex and you second number such as 11 is your k The point which is 4,7 the number 4 represents your x and 7 represents your y.
Steps 1. plug in the vertex which is you h and k. 2. plug in your points of x and y. 3. Add or subtract the end number to the beginning number. 4. The numbers that are in the parenthesis and the square plug into the calculator ( )2. 5. Divide 6. rewrite the equation.
Important step Make sure when equation is fully done write whether it goes up or down, stretch or compress, right or left how many, and up or down how many. The first number in the equation if its bigger than -1 it goes up. If the first number at your final equation is higher than one it stretches, the number in the parenthesis is always opposite so say it was (4) it would be opposite so you go left 4. And the lasts number at the very end is always the number of places you move up or down. -7 so you move down seven places.
Examples Vertex(11,4) and your point is (4,9) Make sure you write the equation y= a(x-h)2 + k. Fill in the formula - 9= a(4-11) + 4 Your h is always the opposite of what you see. Subtract 4 from 9, then you have 9-4=5 The (4-11)2 needs to be plugged into the calculator. Solve the rest by dividing Rewrite the equation with a, x, and y
Examples V( 4,10) pt(3,2) Y= a(x-h)2+k 2= a (3-4)2+10 -10 -10 -8= a1 Divide and a= -8 To rewrite do y=-8(x-4)+10 Down, stretch, right 4 and up ten
