Impact That Librarians And Libraries Have On The Decline...
TO READ OR NOT TO READ: THE IMPACT THAT LIBRARIANS AND LIBRARIES HAVE
ON THE DECLINE IN READING AND LIBRARY SERVICES AS CHILDREN GROW UP
By:
Jessie A. Abraham
Wayne State University LITERATURE REVIEW The research question what impact can librarians
and libraries have on the decline in older children and teen use of library services and recreational
reading can be broken down to discuss several subtopics. This literature review examines peer
reviewed background material to provide a basis for the research questions discussed within this
study. The review of the literature is divided into four subtopics that were studied using different
theories and approaches in an effort to answer the research question. In an ... Show more content on

Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children
The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found
that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age
twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific
reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored
the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Public libraries focus
simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key
to strategies to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the age of Google. (p. 298).
One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is difficulties selecting appealing
reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with
249 completed surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several
factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens did not view library staff
as a useful source of readers advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to
read for pleasure. In this study, many teens note that they have more homework that elementary
school, but also more freedom to socialize. Teens describe their dislike of assigned reading and
their desire to select their own reading materials. This research

Verification Of Motion Lab
Verification of Newton s 2nd Law of Motion
Introduction The objective of this lab was to test Newton s 2nd law of motion, which states that
the acceleration of an object is proportional to the sum of forces acting on it and inversely
proportional to its mass. This was done by connecting a cart to a hook with a string and using a
smart pulley to measure the acceleration of varying masses on the hook as it falls down. System
mass remains constant. A free body diagram and applying Newton s 2nd Law yields the following
relationship:
Where mass 1 is the mass of the cart and the weights it contains, while mass 2 is the hook and the
weights it holds. Thus the goal is to record data that follows this equation; as more masses are
added to the hook, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A smart pulley is clamped onto the side of the table and connected to a computer to sync with
Capstone. In Capstone, select the device as Photogate with Pulley. Set up a position vs time
graph to record data for. Attach a string to the cart, over the smart pulley, and latch it onto a 5g
hook to the side of the table. Obtain four weights: two 20g, one 50g, and one 100g. While
keeping the cart in place, keep one 20g weight on the hook and the remainder in the cart. Start
recording data from the smart pulley and release the cart so that it will slowly slide towards the
edge of the table. Grab the cart before it hits the pulley and stop recording data. Reset the cart s
position to 50 cm away from the edge. Repeat this process for the following masses on the hook:
40g (two 20g weights), 70g (one 20g weight and a 50g weight), 100g (just the 100g weight), and
170g (one 20g, 50g, and 100g). Keep the remainder weights on the cart. Be careful with the cart at
higher masses on the hook, as it will move quickly. Once the trials are completed, create quadratic
fits for the recorded data on Capstone. Make sure to remove unwanted data, such as the initial
motionless state of the cart and the adrupt halt of its motion. The acceleration of the system is two
times the value of the A constant in the curve fit; record this and do this for all trials.

The Veldt Technology
Having everything done for you seems like a really good idea. Technology has made this
possible, but it s really not at all what we would expect. In the past, there were inventions to help
humans along their way to living a simple life; but do we really want that, a very simple life, so
simple that we will get bored around the house and our things will be done by someone else, or
maybe even by something else? Do we want our things, our chores or our work to be done by...
computers or technology? In the short story, The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, inventions that would
seem unimaginable or even impossible for us today have a very big impact on the characters lives.
For the Hadley family, these impacts make them spoiled, lazy, careless and useless.... Show more

as well as for George; he responds with Am I? (p.119) when Lydia explains him that he s
unnecessary too. The two of them decide that they should shut off the whole house, Live sort of a
carefree one for all existence. (p.125). The kids obviously don t want that and so they think of
getting rid of their boring, old parents that don t listen to them. They ask themselves how they got
in this mess and what prompted them to buy a nightmare and come up with the idea that it was
pride, money and foolishness (p.129). They thought that because they have money, they should buy
this mad man house.
Ray Bradbury is telling us that he does not like technology. To make his point, he makes up a
futuristic world where people are just useless, lazy and boring. He makes up houses that serve as
wife and mother now and nursemaid. (p.119). He really wants us to see that technology, abused, is
actually not as good as everyone would imagine. When the Hadleys buy the house and the nursery,
they actually buy their own ticket to death. They might not know it, but it s true. Bradbury warns us
that children should never be exposed to that kind of technology because of the outcome it can have

Descriptive Essay About Running
I loved running ever since I could walk on my two feet. I started to like running when I saw my
dad coaching the track and field team at this school. I felt like the competition of running. My
favorite part were the races. The racing was the best part because everybody was cheetah fast. It
would be two or more people neck to neck to win the race. As they zoomed pass for first. The first
day of school of middle school was so awesome so much new things became accessed in middle
school. The hallways were long . When I was runningaround the hallway in the school and a
teacher stopped me and asked, Are you doing cross country. When she said cross country my
eyes opened. This is the first year when you can do cross country. Then I remembered that It was
so far away from now. It s going to be 2 months till practice starts. So later on in middle it was
finally time for the first cross country practice. When I showed to my first practice of cross
country I got surprised to see tall, long legged, fast people zooming pass me. Like Usain bolt.
While I admired watching the racers run the coach said, How are you doing young man. I said
good. Then the cross country coach said, Those long legs are going to help you run fast. She also
said, those legs look like running legs. When I heard the coach say that to me I was so inspired
that I could actually be good at this. After the practice that day I told my Dad how my day was and
I told him that the practice at cross country

Animal Farm By George Orwell Research Paper
From then until now, writers always like to use literature to illustrate political issue. Because of
the unstable political situations and the dictatorships that still appear nowadays, British author
George Orwell s notable novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm become popular again. George
Orwell s novels are famous for the criticism and irony, they criticize the despotism and show his
anti utopia idea, and even predicted what happened after he wrote his novels.
In 1903, George Orwell was born in British Indian, he described his family as a lower upper
middle class. His father was a British civil servant in the Indian Opium Department. When George
Orwell was one year old, his mother brought him and his two sisters to England and his father ...

Orwell used to represent the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. He sets the rules that are beneficial to
himself and forces other animals to work for him, he also sends his dogs to hurt whoever doesn t

his thoughts. For example, In the novel, after the animals build the windmill which symbolizes

to achieve that is socialism. Dictatorship is still here currently, a lot of people who are on a high

Heredity and Hormones Effect on Behavior Essay
Human behavior has been a mystery to scientists and psychologists for years. What causes humans
to act the way they do? Is it learned by experience, or inherited from prior generations? The human
brain is a complex machine driven by numerous intangibles that influence our thinking process
directly and indirectly.
The endocrine system in the human body stores a chemical known as hormones. Hormones are
released by endocrine glands into the bloodstream and travel throughout the body carrying
messages. A hormonal impulse is similar to a nerve impulse only much slower. The messages
carried by the hormones trigger different behaviors. Hormones can affect behavior in many ways
such as: Mental activity or tiredness, boredom or excitement, sexual ... Show more content on

Both glands produce two distinct hormones, but produce differing amounts of each hormone.
Masculine hormones such as androgens and testosterone are predominately produced by male
testes. These hormones at high levels can be related to aggressive behavior regardless of sex, but
high levels are most commonly found in males. High levels of feminine hormones or estrogen,
most commonly found in females, have recently been linked to aggressive behavior as well. While
high levels of estrogen in females and high levels of testosterone in males have been linked to
aggressive behavior, normal levels of these hormones have been known to cause aggression as well.
Although these hormones have been related to human behavior, scientists have concluded that
these hormones alone do not dictate behavior (Morris Maisto, 2005).
Adrenal glands, located near the kidneys, secrete several hormones that are activated by the nervous
system. These hormones dictate the body s reaction to stressful situations. Each person secretes a
different amount of hormones, therefore affecting behavior in stressful situations differently
(Morris Maisto, 2005).
Behavior is party affected by human hormones present in the body built from genetic traits inherited
from the individual s parents. The genetic makeup of an individual combined with a certain
environment, can affect behavior. Genetics is the science of analyzing traits inherited through
generations. These traits are determined by genes that

The Theory Of Scientific Revolutions
In my essay I plan to argue that Thomas Kuhn was incorrect when he presented his theory that no
paradigm is better than any other paradigm and how he believed that people who occupy different
paradigms are in different universes, in his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. I believe
that there is no valid deductive or inductive support for incommensurability, there are examples
against it throughout the history of sciencethat do not exhibit the discontinuity and replacement of
paradigms, as Kuhn s incommensurability thesis predicts, but rather continuity and
supplementation. If this is correct, then there are no compelling epistemic reasons to believe that
Kuhn s incommensurability thesis is true or probable. The argument that the point of the same
kind terms changes or ceases from one theoretical context to another, it does not fundamentally
mean that these two abstract frameworks are taxonomically or methodologically
incommensurable. Kuhn s theory takes a relativist stance and uses it to make all theories and
paradigms equal with none being better than the other. This poses a major problem because the
hope of scientific research is best said as For a realist conception of scientific progress also wishes
to assert that, by and large, later science improves on earlier science, in particular by approaching
closer to the truth. This means that all realist scientist hope that by advancing our scientific
knowledge we will eventually come closer to the truth about

Vegetarians Vs. Fad Diets
How will you feel after gaining back the weight you spend money toward? Well, Fad diets have
been around for a very long time, based mostly on half truths and wishful thinking of the authors.
Some may have a bit of science to back them up, but the diets are so restrictive and difficult, no
one can stick to them. Losing weight temporarily on a fad diet does not equal success. Diet
success is defined as keeping that weight off permanently. If a fad diet is impossible to follow for
very long, you ll just re gain all the weight. And much of the weight lost on extremely low calorie
fad dietsis water. UCLA associate professor of psychology and lead author Traci Mann said You can

Development of Web 2.0 and Social Media
Introduction
Web 2.0 refers to the term given to the second generation World Wide Web, which is majorly
focused on giving people the ability to collaborate and share information online. The transition
from the old static web pages to the more dynamic and interactive web pages are what are referred
to as web 2.0, this websites are well organized and are geared towards delivering of web
applications to the users. Web 2.0 brings other improved functionalities like open communication
emphasizing on web communities of users and open sharing information with each other. Web
2.0 has become more synonymous as a marketing term. Components of web 2.0 are Wikis,
Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Flickr. There have been discussions of Web 2.0 roots
been in development communities for open source software, these communities organize and
participate in development of software and ideas and suggestions are shared in real time, and the
same would apply for Web 2.0. For Web 2.0 it s not just about opening up the code it involves
opening up the production of content and exposing data so it can be re used by all online users

Borrelia Burgdorferi Research Paper
Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorfer, this bacterium is transmitted to humans
through ticks. Borrelia burgdorferi is a gram negative bacterium that belongs to the spirochetes
class, its usually 1um wide but can be up to 10 25um long. Some of the structures that Borrelia
burgdorferi have are the flagellum, which allows the bacterium to migrate through viscous fluids
(i.e. blood) and burrow through tissues, the bacterium also has outer surface proteins that are OspA
and OspC which play a direct role in the transmission of the bacteriainto the host cell. Bacteria in
general do not have the limitations that viruses do, viruses must have a living host in order to
reproduce. Most bacteria are able to grow on non living surfaces and live intercellularly. Lyme
diseaseis easy to identify because of the bullseye that results from the tickbite infected with Borrelia
burgdorfer. Viruses are extremely unique to the microbial world they are the smallest and

Troy and Trojan War
Troy and Trojan War: Final
Topic 2
Helen: What is beauty? Some may say Helen is and was the definition of beauty. Can beauty be
born or be simply made by the Gods. Beauty in this epic tale in The Iliad had the power to make
any man do anything, Helen being a famous female character in this ancient time made the power
of beauty strike. In this period of time walked many strong warriors, many famous warriors. But
they all seemed to let Helen has the power. When being this beautiful I believe it came with a big
price. She was blamed for the war. She was called the innocent, the guilty, the dangerous, the
sinful, the irresponsible, and the woman who launched a thousand ships . She was blamed because
these men were fools to her beauty. A woman s beauty can t possibly be the cause for all this death
and destruction. But in the epic tale of The Iliad, these men made Helen the most powerful one of
them all. Some say she was the reasoning for all many innocent men who died, but why? Her
beauty. Helen of Sparta was the cause of the whole war between the Trojans and the Achillians,
which lasted for ten years. She was mortal and immortal, he father was told as being Zeus and
her mother was the Leda, the beautiful queen of Sparta. Her mother was a swan so when having
Helen she was in an egg. As she grew older all Helen s suitors came from all over Greece, one of
the men were Menelaus who she married. But during an absence of Menelaus, Helen was taken

the most important musicians of the 20th century by Rolling Stone Magazine and known as the

white people s attitudes towards blacks. (Davis 98) Davis social focus has always been on that of

Apollo 13 Thesis
In the movie Apollo 13, Ron Howard experienced many challenges trying to recreate authenticity in
the Apollo 13 space mission s story, while still adding his own creative spin to the movie. In April
1970, National Aeronautic Space Agency (NASA) launched a spacecraft with three astronauts on
board this flight. During this mission, Apollo 13experienced multiple issues, which caused the
mission to end earlier than expected. After 20 years had passed, Jim Lovell, one of the Apollo 13,
and Jeffrey Kluger wrote Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, which chronicled this
event in NASAs lunar space history. Soon after its release, this book caught the eye of famous

As editors of the movie, Mike Hill and Daniel Hanley were persistently tested in finding ways to
remain as true as possible to the historical event. One way that they did this was through keeping
some of the scenes consistent to the real timing of the events. In one scene, NASA s command
center in Houston, TX lost communication with the spacecraft for some time. As a crucial issue
within this account, Hill and Hanley wanted to keep this same timing in the movie, so they
wanted to try to keep the running time in the film pretty close to the time on the clock and not
have radio silence lasting for nine minutes or something (Apollo 13). Since long periods of
silence is not always the best way to keep an audience s attention, the editors had to find ways to
keep the audience engaged while still staying true to the real event, The whole sequence benefits
from some great camera movement and crane shots which, combined with James Horner s score
and sound design by Steve Flick and Chic Ciccolini, helped immensely to build the tension (Apollo
13). By using a certain sequences, and also strong music, the editors were able to make this scene

Developments in the Study of Cryptography Essay
Since the beginning of civilization, humans have needed a way to communicate in secret.
Whether it be a letter to a lover or a set of orders for an army, it would be paramount for these
messages to arrive unknown and untouched. However at some point, a person could easily
apprehend the message; perhaps a spy or the letter bearer, nevertheless the chance of the message
being compromised would be quite high. Thus one would have to change the message to appear as
meaningless nonsense to those others than the intended recipient. This idea formed the basis of
cryptography, the backbone of digital security. Cryptography is the study and practice of secure
communications between two parties usually in the presence of a malicious entity,... Show more

Thus by only knowing what the cipher was, one would know what the original message was.
Early ciphers were primitive and involved the manipulation of the characters in a message. A
transposition and substitution cipher was very common in the classical age before computers. A
transposition cipher involved merely arranging the letters in a message while a substitution cipher
involved changing the letters in a message to a different one in the alphabet or to a symbol. Julius
Ceasar used a form of substitution cipher in which he simply changed the letter to its respected
position three spaces in front of it in the alphabet. As one can imagine, such a cipher was easy to
break just from analyzing the ciphertext, and thus more complicated ciphers involving
mathematical theory were created. However as the advancement of cryptography continued, so did
its contrary field of cryptanalysis, the interpretation of protocols. This arrived at the discovery of
frequency analysis; the process in which the repetition of certain characters in a language is greater
than those of other characters. Thus the frequency of certain meaningless characters in a ciphertext
would be higher than those of other ones. This meant that a new method of encrypting messages
had to be invented as any cipher could be broken. This new method involved putting a private key (
a string of characters) into the cipher so that

Beloved Character Analysis
In the book Beloved by Toni Morrison, Paul D. proves to be a complex and significant character
throughout the story. Accordingly, his experiences in his life, changes him to the man he was
destined to be. Although, he wasn t always this way, not until he meets up with Sethe at 124 that he
starts turning into his true self. Morrison conveys his role to be vital by portraying him as a man
with a golden heart, to be supportive to the characters around him, and with the struggle to reach
manhood. To begin with, Paul D. s difficult hardships and story made him into a broken down
man but with a heart of gold. In Sethe s view, Not even trying, he had become the kind of man
who could walk into a house and make the women cry. Because with him, in his presence, they
could. There was something blessed in his manner (11). This indicates that Paul D. wasn t just an
ordinary man, he possessed of a particular quality that most mendidn t, which is a big heart. This
demonstrates Sethe s comfortable state with Paul D. because it allows her to have a trustworthy
individual of her own to fall back on. Another example of Paul D. is, By the time he got to 124
nothing in this world could pry it open (66). Morrison s point is this character s heart is
compared to a tobacco tin due to how little he loves and all the painful memories it consists of.
This is important because he is a free slave, but without a home to stay in. Paul D has put his
painful memories in the past in order to survive

Alfred Lord Tennyson, Langston Hughes And Walt Whitman
Three of the most well known Western genii of poetry are Alfred Lord Tennyson, Langston Hughes
and Walt Whitman. All of these men have exemplary traits and attributes in their respective sectors
of poetry. Tennyson, Hughes and Whitman all played a major role in the world of poetry and many
factors of theirs are still influencing prose to this day. Despite being among the most influential
poets of the American canon, Walt wasn t born quoting Shakespearean poetry. He was born in New
York to a poor family and was the second of nine children. After concluding formal schooling at
the age of eleven, Walt started to work for the local printer. He became an active member of his
local library, joined a public speaking club, and started watching theatrical performances. At his
local library, he studied history, theatre, literature, music, geography, and many other sciences. At
the age of thirteen Walt anonymously published his first ever poem in the New York Mirror . After
a temporary collapse of the printing industry and variety of different jobs, Whitman started to
indulge in freelance fiction and poetry writing.
Despite the fact that Walt Whitmanmay have seemed simple minded, he had a major role in the
world of poetry. Walt Whitman established a new kind of poetry called free verse. Never before was
a poet able to write a rhythm free poem without having his/her poetry pushed away. Poetry is still

negotiating on a film by film basis because otherwise, the studios will have an informational
advantage. Later on in the production process, studios will have a greater idea of the quality of
the film, making them less likely to sell the rights to more profitable sequels. Advanced rights to
the entire portfolio of films mitigates this informational asymmetry and creates an options
pricing model for Arundel. There is value in Arundel s right to forgo production of the sequel if
they discover that the original is a flop. If Arundel chooses to forgo producing a sequel, in this
model they are now only taking a $2M loss. To the movie studios, Arundel s proposal creates
great value. By offering the cash for all movies in advance, Arundel is providing upfront financing
to the cash hungry studios, allowing them the resources to pursue other projects, especially big
budget blockbusters that have substantial negative costs. The guaranteed profit of the sequel
rights fees abolishes some risk for the studios, even though it eliminates their potential upside. By
purchasing the rights to an entire portfolio of films from the studios, it also serves Arundel to
diversify away the risks of individual films, much like investing in diversified funds of market
indexes. Based on the attached analysis, 26 of the 99 potential sequels are profitable to pursue as
they have a positive NPV. The NPV of the

Causes And Effects Of Race Riots In America
The working conditions were very difficult, tiring, and dangerous but the workers were fine with
that considering they were getting paid three times more than they were in the south. Female
migrants also searched for work but found it much more of a challenge due to competition for
domestic labor positions. There was a large amount of competition for jobs but considering the
increasing population percentage in crowded cities, living space was also a competition many
African Americans were faced with. The North offered more food and better housing, but also some
unhealthy and overcrowded accommodations that helped spread tuberculosis . Segregation was not
legal in the North like it was in the South but racismand prejudice were wide spread through the
United States. Racially based housing ordinances were declared unconstitutional by the U.S.
Supreme Court in 1917. It led some neighborhoods to pass an agreement that requires white
property owners to agree not to sell to blacks, until 1948 when the court turned down the agreement.
A large amount of raceriots began after 1915 when the rent rose in segregated areas and a
reawakening activity by the KKK which brought problems between relations of blacks and
whites. The most disturbing wave of race riots took place in Chicago, July of 1919, lasting 13
days. It left 38 people dead, 537 injured and 1,000 black families homeless. With all the tension
between blacks and whites, the blacks went ahead and made their own

Factory Farmed Animals Summary
In his article Puppies, Pigs, and People Eating and Marginal Cases , Norcross makes the argument
that buying factory raised meat and eating it can be morally compared to obtaining puppies and
torturing them to extract cocoamone hormone for gustatory pleasure. He also states that meat
eaters that come to this realization should turn vegetarian. According to people who disagree with
Norcross, they argue the fact that factory farmed animals are not puppies, most consumers do not
torture or kill the factory farmed meat, and becoming vegetarian will not really make an impact
and prevent animal suffering. If majority of the US population switched their diet to become
vegetarian, there would be less animal suffering and would lead to a big impact

Importance Of The Charter Of Rights And Freedoms
The Charter, or formally known as The Charter of Rights and Freedoms, is one part of the
Canadian constitution. The Charter details the rights and freedoms that Canadians believe are
necessary in a democratic society. Rights and freedoms such as the Freedom of Expression,
Aboriginal Peoples Rights, The Right to Equality, Including the Equality of Men and Women; are
set in place to protect those who may be opposed to prejudice due to possible stigma attached to
such topics. The Charter was created by a committee of Canadian Parliamentarians and was signed
by Queen Elizabeth II in Ottawa when it officially came into effect on April 17th, 1982 as part of
the Constitution Act. The Constitution contains the main, underlying rules that every law in Canada
must abide by. The Charter specifically was created to quote unify Canadians around a set
principles that embody those rights. In non formal terms, it protects Canadians human rightsfrom
being violated in both federal, provincial and territorial laws. If your human rights were violated,
you can challenge it in a court of law. If the court agrees with you, three outcomes can arise.
First, you can ask the court for any remedy or compensation that is appropriate. Second, if the
rights were violated during an investigation, you may ask the court to remove the evidence from
being valid. Lastly, if the court finds that a law or section of a law violates a persons Charter
rights, they can make an order that the law be revoked.

Comparing Three Different Classes of Vertebrates
Introduction Chordates are an animal phylum that is classified by four main characteristics that
they all obtain over the course of their lifespans. The first characteristic is the pharyngeal slits,
which can be found in non vertebrates, allow substances to enter and exit (Speer 2000). The
dorsal nerve cord serves as a connection between the brain and other muscles (Speer 2000). The
notochord can be found below the nerve cord and acts as a support system (Speer 2000). Finally,
the post anal tail comes out from the body from the opening of the anus (Speer 2000). One major
characteristic that distinguishes Vertebrates from invertebrates is the backbone that is present in
their bodies. Vertebrates also have two pair of appendages and have bilateral symmetry (Adojaan
2005). Along with a fully developed organ system, Vertebrates have a central and peripheral
nervous system and a closed circulatory system (Adojaan 2005). This lab report compares
Amphibia, Reptilia, and Mammalia in order to outline the similarities and differences between the
many vertebrate classes. By comparing and contrasting theses classes, a further understanding and
knowledge of Vertebrates can be gained. Part A Class Amphibia, more commonly known as
amphibians, have several features that set them apart as a unique Class. Organisms found within
the Class Amphibia are cold blooded and have very smooth skin (Prakash 2014). Amphibians can
be found on both land and water, which is necessary in order to keep

A reflection of Odysseus and Modern Day Heroes The...
Written about two thousand and seven hundred years earlier, the Odyssey is still influencing
modern storytelling today. Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca and protagonist of
Homer s epic poem the Odyssey was recognized as a great hero of his time. He was known for
his defining qualities of superior strength and athleticism, sharp intellect, sensual ness, and a thirst
for glory. These character traits are still being used to attribute modern day fictional heroes such
as Neo, Captain Jack Sparrow, James Bond, and Spiderman. Accordingly, the heroic qualities of
Odysseus can be still be seen in today s modern day fictional heroes.

Both Sparrow and Odysseus use this type of sharp cunning intellect to get what they need.
Odysseus also shares his trait of sensual ness to women with the modern day hero of James
Bond. There were numerous occasions where Odysseus came across a beautiful woman and
lived a luxurious life with her before continuing his journey home. Three such examples were
Calypso, Nausicaa, and Circe. With Circe in particular, Circe turned all of Odysseus crew into
swine, but he was able to resist her powers, which caused her to fall in love with him. Odysseus
then decided to spend a year of luxury on her island as her lover. Odysseus said, We sat there
feasting on unlimited meat and sweet wine. But when the sun went down and the sacred
darkness came over... but I, mounting the surpassingly beautiful bed of Circe, clasped her by the
knees and entreated her (Homer, 164). Odysseus enjoyed his luxurious life with Circe in an
exotic land, but only to a point. Eventually, he decided to focus on the greater task at hand and
return home to Ithaca. James Bond possesses this same trait of sensual ness towards women
throughout all of the bond films. In just about every film, Bond comes across a beautiful female
that he ends up spending an intimate time with before going off to save the world. In Casino
Royal, Bond enters a relationship with Solange. Solange says to Bond, What is it about bad men?

Determinism And Free Will In Harry Potter And The Prisoner...
The controversy of whether the doctrine of determinism or free will guides us throughout our life
is constantly debated. Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are
humans free to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels
the actions of characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potterand the Prisoner of
Azkaban, there is a certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their
fates. On the contrary, the chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all
expectation, to do what they want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467
1469), suggesting that whatever Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods.
That she enacts the judgement of the gods is what she considers the bindings of fate, but under the
lens of Harry Potter, Rowling would treat this as free will that endows fate.
The notion that there is a superior force that decides fate is present in the novel and the play,
although the extent of this power contrasts. Dumbledore acts as a semi god figure in Harry Potter,
determining the fates of Buckbeak and Sirius Black by pushing Hermione and Harry to use the
Time Turner. Had he not opened up this possibility to them, the salvation of the doomed characters
would not have been possible. As the events unfold with the time travel, Buckbeak s liberation from
execution leads Dumbledore to remark How

Analysis Of Pride And Fate In Oedipus Rex
A Subject of Pride and Fate
Although they are vastly different in their respective time periods and thus, culture, the stories of
Oedipus Rex and Monkey: Story of the West have managed to capture an aspect of the human
condition that has not changed over the millennia: the excess of pride. Humanity has also
questioned the impact and control over their lives, wondering if some omniscient, higher power
influences their lives or if man is truly in charge of paving their own destiny. Such philosophical
thinking has also surpassed time and space, taking harbor in literature and media. Such themes are
present in the tale of Oedipus Rex, written in 442 BCE in Athens, which details the story of a man
fated to murder his father and wed his mother (Puchner 705). Determined to save themselves from
the prophecy unfolding, Jocasta and Laius, Oedipus parents, had planned for the death of their
cursed child by their shepherd. However, mercy struck the heart of the shepherd and he brought the
infant to a royal household where they had raised Oedipus. As the prince of Corinth, Oedipus
receives a message from the oracle, confirmed by the Tiresias, the prophet, that he is the murderer
from the prophecy. Driven by self preservation due to his pride, Oedipus ignores such warnings
causing the continuation of the plague to destroy the city of Thebes. Not only had Oedipus allowed
the suffering of a great population, but also decides, in a further attempt to appease his prideful

Susan B. Anthony s Trial
Susan B. Anthony is not on trial; the United States is on trial (Anthony 179). On November 18,
1872, Susan Brownell Anthony, an avid women s suffragist, was arrested for illegally voting. For
more than twenty years, Anthony had dedicated her life, tirelessly giving speeches and
petitioning Congress in order to gain women across the nation the right to vote. Before voting,
Miss Anthony had ensured that she was a registered voter, as well as the other fourteen women
who accompanied her to the polls. As required by law, Anthony was asked several questions to
assure she met the qualifications to vote. However, several days after casting her vote, a police
officer arrived at her front door. After her arrest, the news of Anthony s trial
began making headlines
throughout the United States. Eventually, Miss Anthony was found to be guilty of illegally voting.
Nevertheless, through the close examination of several primary sources, bias and a distinct lack of
fairness are revealed in United States v. Susan B. Anthony. There are several sources composed
after Susan B. Anthony s hearing that allow a conclusion to be drawn that Miss Anthony did not
receive a fair trial. Some prime examples of this claim are numerous handwritten letters and diary
entries, a newspaper article, a court transcript, and a petition to Congress. The first source employed
throughout this essay is composed of numerous letters and diary entries written by Anthony herself
that discuss the unlawful events

The Lord of the Rings directed by Peter Jackson Essay
The Art and the Business of My Inspirational Film A cultural product that inspires me is the film
trilogy The Lord of the Rings, which was directed by Peter Jackson. This movie gave me
inspiration because of how beautiful and well put together the film was. It made me want to be
involved with the process of how great films are made. According to Wikipedia, Jackson knew
he wanted to bring the movie to the big screen, and was curious to why nobody decided to do so.
He wanted to take advantage of the new technology, and create a fantasy that was serious and felt
real (Wikipedia, 2014). Peter Jackson demonstrates the art and business of the film in many ways,

Peter Jackson watched the animation of The Lord of the Rings, which lead him to read Tolkien s
novels. He was interested in making the Hobbit series first, but put the project on hold because
he was offered to remake the film King Kong. So then he wanted to film King Kong before the
trilogy, but had to put it on hold because of location problems, so he began with The Lord of the
Rings project. Jackson wanted to make sure that everything would run smoothly for the film, so
he got started with rereading the books and developing a script (Wikipedia, 2014). According to
the web, Peter Jackson created the remake of Tolkien s novel because he was a fan of the
original work and wanted to bring it to life. He was inspired by his 12 hour train ride when he

Abstract
The spotted owl was seen as a symbol of all things environmental during the late 1980 s and early
1990 s. The logging industry was well on its way to destroying most of the old growth forests of the
Pacific Northwest. Environmentalists swarmed the area, sabotaging logging efforts and calling ...

Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of
salmon streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole.
The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over
the past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear cut logging.
Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts.
However, this doesn t help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive
trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of
jobs have been lost. Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed.
So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists
want to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues
that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs.
The spotted owl needs a home.
One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of
jobs. There were 21,000 jobs lost during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The
amount of job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time were not solely attributed to the
spotted owl controversy. The downward trend in the timber harvest

But at the start of the movie, the students, notably Marcus and Eva show no enthusiasm nor
compassion in anything and anyone. Nevertheless, the first empathy is shown when the
students come to visit the Holocaust Museum. They are stunned by how they have so much
better situation than the Holocaust survivors. From that moment, Marcus and Eva start to
develop their empathy skill. There is a scene where a guy named Miguel comes up to the middle
of the class and starts to read his journal. Miguel shares his struggle about his early life and how
he is now happy that he has found a new home, class 203. And then, Marcus, a guy who seems
very quiet and tough, approaches him and gives him his empathy. He shakes his hand, hugs
him, and even sheds tears, showing that he empathizes for Miguel.. That scene warms me and I
feel empathy for Miguel as well. A similar situation of empathy is also being displayed by Eva
when she chooses to defend the truth by telling the court that Paco, her boyfriend is the one who
killed the guy in the store instead of the black guy. By saying the truth, she betrays her own
people but she does the right and that shows how she has changed and developed her empathy.
According to Paul Wong s article about empathy he notes that ... individuals are more likely to be
empathic to others, when they have experienced many hardships and are well acquainted with
sorrows and sufferings. This is what I see in the movie, Marcus and Eva realize that they all came
from the same background; that they must fight for their lives, dignity, and existence. Thus, both
Marcus and Eva develop what Wong would call the experiential empathy which is a type of
empathy that is developed when one has experienced other s difficulties. Eventually, Marcus and
Eva start to have an appreciation for Miss Gruwell as a teacher and have empathy toward one

Examples Of Attorney Malpractice Claim
Attorney Malpractice Claims and the Self Defense Rule
When an attorney is faced with a malpractice claim, rules regarding disclosure of privileged
attorney client communications can cause much confusion and distress. We all know that
communications made to an attorney are privileged and as such must be held in strict confidence.
However, limited circumstances do exist that permit a disclosure of a confidential communication
where it becomes necessary for an attorney to defend herself. In California, and Federal practice,
an attorney may disclose a privileged attorney client communication in her defense only if the
communication is relevant to the claim of breach. This rule is provided for in Evidence Code
section 958 which creates an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The communications, though disclosed, may not be utilized in later proceedings. The courts have
found that permitting subsequent disclosures would further perpetuate the prior ineffectiveness of
counsel and unfairly require the defendant to give up his right to confidentiality to ensure a fair trial
with effective counsel. (In re Miranda (2008) 43 Cal.4th 541, 555.) The court held that to interpret
section 958 as abolishing the privilege for all later purposes would raise questions as to whether the
section conflicts with the defendant s 6th amendment right to counsel. Any further admission of an
attorney s ineffective assistance at a subsequent retrial could be viewed as a further consequence of
the violation of the defendant s right to effective assistance of counsel. Therefore, the exception

Mammography Essay
After careful analysis of numerous studies performed in many countries around the world, I believe
that mammography contributes to increased detection of breast cancer but shows no reduction in
its mortality rate. The strongest articles that support my stance surround the Canadian National
Breast Screening Study (CNBSS), which is a randomized clinical trial started in 1980 which aimed
to assess the differences in breast cancerprevalence in two primary groups of women aged 40 59.
89 835 women have participated in this study since its inception. The first group consists of those

CNBSS findings were released at the 13, 11 16 and 25 year marks. Results from the first period
concluded that early mammography and physical examination of the breasts detected considerably
more node negative, small tumours than usual care, but it had no impact on the rate of death from
breast cancer.1 Due to the length of the observational period following enrollment in the study,
subjects fell between 50 and 59 years old at the time of this evaluation. The mortality ratio
between the two groups at first look was 1.36. Both groups showed similar survival rates1. Upon
the second evaluation, researchers acknowledged the benefit of improved detection of impalpable
and even in situ breast carcinomas with screening, but were adamant that mammography played
no role in reducing mortality rate2. The 25 year findings are of particular importance, as the
CNBSS is now the longest running observational study of its kind. All cause mortality was 9477

I Am Malala, By Malala Yousafzai
There is a saying that the only time people realized the importance of someone or something is
when they lose it. People start missing and regret what they missed. As a student I found that
most students do not cherish the opportunities of going to school. They do not like and are tired
of the homework their teachers assigned and a bunch of tests, quizzes they have every week.
What these student do not know is that in some counties the opportunity to get education is
relatively low than the countries they lived in. They also do not know how powerful schooling

Strengths Of The Immune System And Ayurveda
Immune system and Ayurveda
What is Immune system:
The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to
protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes,
which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease causing organisms or
substances.
What cause immune system to weaken:
Anything that weakens your immune system can lead to a secondary immunodeficiency disorder.
Low consumption of protein in your diet can weaken your immune system. Your body also
produces proteins when you sleep that help your body fight infection. For this reason, lack of sleep
reduces your immune defenses. There are several other factors too which cause the weakness of

What Best Buy s Minneapolis Headquarters During Their...
Key Issues:
This week s case analysis captures the Best Buy s Minneapolis headquarters during their
transition towards the Results Only Work Environment program (ROWE). This anecdote spans
from a period of over 6 years (2003 2009), and in relation to our reading this week, exemplifies a
company in the midst of a culture change. During the initial phase, the ROWE program was
isolated from retail stores and exclusively offered to only the 4,000 headquarter employees (75%
enrolled at the time of the case). The story of ROWE within the Best Buy organization has spawned
favorable statistics within the company (e.g., productivity increases of 35 percent within 9 months,
voluntary turnover drops of 52 90 percent, and overall increase in employee morale for departments
within the program). Despite the warranted success of the program, the Best Buy enterprise
continues to face some resistance and difficulties with extending the program beyond headquarters.
Nevertheless, the key issues to be discussed are as follows:
In regards to chapter 16, the process of organizational socialization starts at the selection process.
Best Buy has stymied organizational culture shift by allowing the transition to be at the discretion
of the department managers.
Managers have displayed a dominant resistant to change. Therefore, how does leadership mold
attitudes of managers to accommodate/facilitate a holistic cultural change?

Professional Socialization In Nursing
Professional Socialization
Socialization is the process during which people learn the roles, statuses and values necessary for
participation in social institutions. (Dinmohammadi, 2013) This process is life long and begins
with learning norms and roles of a family. It is important to develop a self concept which will
continue to grow. As a person gets older you develop new groups and assume new roles. In turn the
person will learn new norms and redefine self concepts. Professional socialization is only the
periodic process of socialization that continues throughout an individual s life.
Socialization is an ongoing process and is a facet of lifelong learning. It will vary from person to
person. One way to introduce socialization to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Indian Removal Act Report
After the removal, Indians began to completely change their culture to live as an American culture.
Schools were created and they had their own newspapers as well as their own governments (Peppas
2013, page 41). They wore the same clothes as Americans (Indian Affairs). Throughout the years,
they have been able to create their own governments and were recognized by the American
government.
The Indians had every reason not to trust Americans after all they went through being constantly
pushed off their land. They were always seen as two separate groups and Americans have treated
the Indians as less than them until recently. The government began to see that the way the Indians
were treated was wrong and should have never been forced to move. There was never an official
apology for the Indian Removal Act and treatment until 2009, when President Barack Obama
signed the Native American Apology Resolution into law (Peppas 2013, page 43). This was to

Kate Chopin s “The Storm” Essay
The short story, The Storm by Kate Chopin is about a love that could never be until it briefly
was. The point that Chopin was trying to get across was that Calixta and Alcee had a strong
passion for one another, and perhaps loved each other, but they could never have been married
because of their social differences. It is a passionate, but brief affair between two married people
from different social classes that takes place during a cyclonein Louisiana around 1898. The story
symbolizes the freedom that a woman felt inside after the rain during a time when women had no
freedom. (Firtha lesson 2 page 1)Calixta and Alcee had a strong passion for each other. Chopin

Their love making was so intense that neither of them had felt those emotions and sensations

upon. (Chopin807) Chopin goes on to say; The generous abundance of her passion, without guile
or trickery, was like a white flame which penetrated and found response in depths of his own
sensuous nature that had never yet had been reached. (807) She stated that text because Calixta
had never felt that way with her own husband. Also, Chopin refers to her mouth being a fountain
of delight. (807) She adds, And when he possessed her, they seemed swoon together at the very

A Comparison of Beauty and the Beast with Toy Story
INTRODUCTION
Disney is an excellent example of a Media corporation as it is known worldwide, go any where

are talking about Disney. They have a huge range of advertising and merchandise ranging from
children s books and films to holiday resorts and theme parks. The Disney brand appeals to all,

It is also because Buzz is so cool; he is brand new and shiny with lots of cool gadgets. As the story
moves on Woody begins to change and realize that Buzz is not such a threat as he first assumed.
He begins to change to what he was before, leading the way and setting a good example. He helps
them get to Pizza Planet and saves Buzz from being blown up by a firework by their evil next door
neighbour, Sid.
Sid is a villainous character; he destroys toys for fun and is feared by all of the toys. Woody shows
his great leadership again when he organizes the toys in a revolt against Sid, leaving him shaken
and very scared. He is a very dark character and this is shown by his image, a black t shirt with a
skull on, scruffy hair and chipped, black teeth. His dog Scud is like a sidekick sharing Sid s hate
for toys, regularly chewing them to pieces.
The way in which the toys are represented is important as well, when there is humans around the
toys are looked down on from a higher perspective. The toys were first seen as inanimate objects,
Andy s playthings. This changes when the toys are alive , they are looked at from their
perspective or from what they are seeing. When Buzz is first seen in the bedroom the camera angle
changes to give him a look of superiority and power, the camera looks at him from a very low view
and then slowly reveals the rest of his

Ways People Benefit From South
What are ways people benefit from South? Ways people benefit from South are being a student
who continuously is on their work, engaged to what needs to be done, and being a responsible
young adult that wants to better themselves as a person, acknowledging the potential they have
from the tools provided by the school. Students being self driven give them an opportunity to excel
in their education. Going in re taking quizzes, tests, doing work show the students willingness to
succeed .
While many U.S. schools struggle with diversity, south successfully is full of diversity and different
cultures. In an article The Century Foundation I found this quote very interesting and somewhat
relatable to south. The benefits of school diversity run in all directions. There is increasing evidence
that diversity that makes us smarter. I believe diversity at south makes students smarter just by
being together. I wanted to ask someone about diversity and this was their response South has great

schools, South could improve in the area of lack of education innovation by teachers furthering
their knowledge as a teacher. In the article of Education Week s Blogs this quote states It stands
to reason that if students are changing, teachers must too. I believe this is true , there are some
teachers who are not good at what they do or how they go about their lessons. Teachers play a
big role in this topic of discussion because they should want to change themselves, but in a
positive way . Some students don t get the help they need. Says Tyanna. This is an issue because I
feel teachers at South focus more on the kids who are not capable like others. If South were to take
this into action students could possibly be more engaged They could improve their curriculum.
Teachers today tend to teach the same things each year , so if their curriculum improved everyone
could progress

For more detail regarding analytical techniques, which provide valuable information necessary for
effective schedule definition, see PMBOK, fourth edition, Section 6.5.2. Most scheduling tools
include features that allow utilization of these techniques with minimal effort. Critical Path Method
The critical path method calculates the longest path of planned activities to the end of the project
the critical path and the earliest and latest date that each activity can start and finish without
extending the project. Any activity delay on the critical path impacts the planned project
completion date. A network diagram visually conveys the critical path. This visibility into the
critical path allows project managers to prioritize activities and take appropriate corrective actions
to meet schedule deadlines. An understanding of the critical path also allows project managers
visibility as to which schedule activities are flexible that is, those activities that are not on the
critical path. By looking at a network diagram, project managers can determine when they have
float or slack, which is the amount of time that any given schedule activity can be delayed without
causing a delay to the start date of subsequent

Specifically, how moving around an excessive amount, and absentee of parents, affect how children

workers, traveling journalist/photographer, and much more. The Smith familyhas been traveling

Because Fern does not have someone she can discuss these changes with, she would more

Another milestone in adolescents is finding their identity. According to Erik Erikson, he says that
there are eight total stages humans go through, each one corresponding with a particular time/age
in a human s life, and each having a psychological crisis. During the time of adolescents, it is a
search for their identity or end up in a state of role confusion. Furthered by Kail and Cavanaugh
(2016), to develop identity, it is facilitated through parental discussion and encouragement. Through
this discussion and encouragement, the child will have a better grasp of who they are, thus being
able to make tough decisions and able to handle a variety of situations, that they know will be the
best route for them. Their identity development also affects their career and interpersonal
relationship development.
Since Fern s parents are more focused on their work, rather than their children, she is once again,
unable to communicate with them about her sense of self, or about things in general. Fern is not
encouraged nor encouraged to explore her different self s. Fern would thus be unable to determine
if the sense of self she currently has been exploring, is the right one for her. She would also likely,
have difficulties communicating with other people, older, younger, and those who are of the same

The Horse Fair And Great Blue Horses, By Rosa Bonheur
The Horse Fair and Great Blue Horses
In this paper I will compare and contrast two paintings, one from French artist Rosa Bonheur and
another from German painter Franz Marc. Marc was an expressionist artist who was a pioneer in
the birth of abstract art at the beginning of the twentieth century. (Pioch, 2002) Bonheur was a
Realist artist who made a great impact on the painting style of realism during the ninetieth century.
Bonheur was about embracing reality and nature, while Marc was about evoking moods through the
subject matters and colors choices in his paintings. These two artist styles are particularly different
from one another, but yet they still have similarities throughout their paintings. This paper will
highlight the similarities and differences between these two artists, making the theme reality verses
perception .
The first painting that I have chosen is The Horse Fair by French artist Rosa Bonheur. This painting
is considered to be Bonheur s best known painting . (The Metropolitan Museum of Art., 2015)
Bonheur began work on this painting in eighteen fifty two, and in eighteen fifty three this painting

Gun Laws Essay
Gun Regulations in Estonia and Belarus Belarus and Estonia s laws were individually crafted based
on each nation s Constitution. Their laws were enacted right after their separation and freedom
from the former Soviet Union. As the time goes by, each country was able to create their respective
gun laws, which are based on their current needs and situation of the country. Each country aimed to
create a government that enforces the laws of the land, which will strengthen their sovereignty as
independent countries. Estonia, for example, enacted The Weapons Act in 2001 that establishes
legal procedures in relation to ammunition and hand handling (Riigi Teataja n.p.). This law covers
the granting of permission for ammunition and weapon, which are intended for civilian use.
According to the law s general provisions, the weapons of the civilians must only be used for
specific purposes, such as engagement in sports, hunting, and for ensuring personal safety. Personal
safety could be the most important reason for some Estonians, as to why they opt to own a gunat
home. However, the law has certain provisions that regulate the classifications of guns that private
individuals can own. Civilians are not allowed to own a firearm... Show more content on

The International Organization For Standardization Essay
Introduction:
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) states that air pollution is the result of
human activities and natural processes on the environment, which causes certain gases to be
released into the air to interact with other substances to form acid rain, the greenhouse effect and
ozone hole on global scale. Environmental pollution can be directly jeopardizes a wide range of
public health in short amount of time through its pollutants that naturally generated in the
atmosphere during the pollutant emission. For instance, the following three cases are the result
of the environmental pollution that occurred in last century. The first one is the Meuse Valley
fog of 1930 that occurred in the area of Liege on the River Meuse where was once one of most
heavily industrialised areas of Europe since industrial revolution. The event occurred between
Dec 1 to Dec 5, 1930, a thick fog covered a large part of Belgium. From Dec 3 onwards, hundreds
of people experienced severe respiratory signs and symptoms in the village between the town of
Huy and Lieg and more than 60 people died in the next 3 day due to its polluted environment.
The second one is the Donora smog of 1948 that occurred in the Pennsylvania, which caused by the
mixture of emission of plants and coal furnace which led to large amount of Sulfur dioxide, carbon
monoxide and metal dust were trapped in the town during oct 26 and dec 31, 1948, caused 20

  • 2. Impact That Librarians And Libraries Have On The Decline... TO READ OR NOT TO READ: THE IMPACT THAT LIBRARIANS AND LIBRARIES HAVE ON THE DECLINE IN READING AND LIBRARY SERVICES AS CHILDREN GROW UP By: Jessie A. Abraham Wayne State University LITERATURE REVIEW The research question what impact can librarians and libraries have on the decline in older children and teen use of library services and recreational reading can be broken down to discuss several subtopics. This literature review examines peer reviewed background material to provide a basis for the research questions discussed within this study. The review of the literature is divided into four subtopics that were studied using different theories and approaches in an effort to answer the research question. In an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the age of Google. (p. 298). One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens did not view library staff as a useful source of readers advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. In this study, many teens note that they have more homework that elementary school, but also more freedom to socialize. Teens describe their dislike of assigned reading and their desire to select their own reading materials. This research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Verification Of Motion Lab Verification of Newton s 2nd Law of Motion Introduction The objective of this lab was to test Newton s 2nd law of motion, which states that the acceleration of an object is proportional to the sum of forces acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass. This was done by connecting a cart to a hook with a string and using a smart pulley to measure the acceleration of varying masses on the hook as it falls down. System mass remains constant. A free body diagram and applying Newton s 2nd Law yields the following relationship: Where mass 1 is the mass of the cart and the weights it contains, while mass 2 is the hook and the weights it holds. Thus the goal is to record data that follows this equation; as more masses are added to the hook, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A smart pulley is clamped onto the side of the table and connected to a computer to sync with Capstone. In Capstone, select the device as Photogate with Pulley. Set up a position vs time graph to record data for. Attach a string to the cart, over the smart pulley, and latch it onto a 5g hook to the side of the table. Obtain four weights: two 20g, one 50g, and one 100g. While keeping the cart in place, keep one 20g weight on the hook and the remainder in the cart. Start recording data from the smart pulley and release the cart so that it will slowly slide towards the edge of the table. Grab the cart before it hits the pulley and stop recording data. Reset the cart s position to 50 cm away from the edge. Repeat this process for the following masses on the hook: 40g (two 20g weights), 70g (one 20g weight and a 50g weight), 100g (just the 100g weight), and 170g (one 20g, 50g, and 100g). Keep the remainder weights on the cart. Be careful with the cart at higher masses on the hook, as it will move quickly. Once the trials are completed, create quadratic fits for the recorded data on Capstone. Make sure to remove unwanted data, such as the initial motionless state of the cart and the adrupt halt of its motion. The acceleration of the system is two times the value of the A constant in the curve fit; record this and do this for all trials. Results After 5 trials, the data was shown to be positively ... • 4. The Veldt Technology Having everything done for you seems like a really good idea. Technology has made this possible, but it s really not at all what we would expect. In the past, there were inventions to help humans along their way to living a simple life; but do we really want that, a very simple life, so simple that we will get bored around the house and our things will be done by someone else, or maybe even by something else? Do we want our things, our chores or our work to be done by... computers or technology? In the short story, The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, inventions that would seem unimaginable or even impossible for us today have a very big impact on the characters lives. For the Hadley family, these impacts make them spoiled, lazy, careless and useless.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lydia acknowledges this and that she doesn t belong in the house I feel like I don t belong here. as well as for George; he responds with Am I? (p.119) when Lydia explains him that he s unnecessary too. The two of them decide that they should shut off the whole house, Live sort of a carefree one for all existence. (p.125). The kids obviously don t want that and so they think of getting rid of their boring, old parents that don t listen to them. They ask themselves how they got in this mess and what prompted them to buy a nightmare and come up with the idea that it was pride, money and foolishness (p.129). They thought that because they have money, they should buy this mad man house. Ray Bradbury is telling us that he does not like technology. To make his point, he makes up a futuristic world where people are just useless, lazy and boring. He makes up houses that serve as wife and mother now and nursemaid. (p.119). He really wants us to see that technology, abused, is actually not as good as everyone would imagine. When the Hadleys buy the house and the nursery, they actually buy their own ticket to death. They might not know it, but it s true. Bradbury warns us that children should never be exposed to that kind of technology because of the outcome it can have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Descriptive Essay About Running I loved running ever since I could walk on my two feet. I started to like running when I saw my dad coaching the track and field team at this school. I felt like the competition of running. My favorite part were the races. The racing was the best part because everybody was cheetah fast. It would be two or more people neck to neck to win the race. As they zoomed pass for first. The first day of school of middle school was so awesome so much new things became accessed in middle school. The hallways were long . When I was runningaround the hallway in the school and a teacher stopped me and asked, Are you doing cross country. When she said cross country my eyes opened. This is the first year when you can do cross country. Then I remembered that It was so far away from now. It s going to be 2 months till practice starts. So later on in middle it was finally time for the first cross country practice. When I showed to my first practice of cross country I got surprised to see tall, long legged, fast people zooming pass me. Like Usain bolt. While I admired watching the racers run the coach said, How are you doing young man. I said good. Then the cross country coach said, Those long legs are going to help you run fast. • 6. Animal Farm By George Orwell Research Paper From then until now, writers always like to use literature to illustrate political issue. Because of the unstable political situations and the dictatorships that still appear nowadays, British author George Orwell s notable novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm become popular again. George Orwell s novels are famous for the criticism and irony, they criticize the despotism and show his anti utopia idea, and even predicted what happened after he wrote his novels. • 7. Heredity and Hormones Effect on Behavior Essay Human behavior has been a mystery to scientists and psychologists for years. What causes humans to act the way they do? Is it learned by experience, or inherited from prior generations? The human brain is a complex machine driven by numerous intangibles that influence our thinking process directly and indirectly. The endocrine system in the human body stores a chemical known as hormones. Hormones are released by endocrine glands into the bloodstream and travel throughout the body carrying messages. A hormonal impulse is similar to a nerve impulse only much slower. The messages carried by the hormones trigger different behaviors. Hormones can affect behavior in many ways such as: Mental activity or tiredness, boredom or excitement, sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both glands produce two distinct hormones, but produce differing amounts of each hormone. Masculine hormones such as androgens and testosterone are predominately produced by male testes. These hormones at high levels can be related to aggressive behavior regardless of sex, but high levels are most commonly found in males. High levels of feminine hormones or estrogen, most commonly found in females, have recently been linked to aggressive behavior as well. While high levels of estrogen in females and high levels of testosterone in males have been linked to aggressive behavior, normal levels of these hormones have been known to cause aggression as well. Although these hormones have been related to human behavior, scientists have concluded that these hormones alone do not dictate behavior (Morris Maisto, 2005). Adrenal glands, located near the kidneys, secrete several hormones that are activated by the nervous system. These hormones dictate the body s reaction to stressful situations. Each person secretes a different amount of hormones, therefore affecting behavior in stressful situations differently (Morris Maisto, 2005). Behavior is party affected by human hormones present in the body built from genetic traits inherited from the individual s parents. The genetic makeup of an individual combined with a certain environment, can affect behavior. Genetics is the science of analyzing traits inherited through generations. These traits are determined by genes that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Theory Of Scientific Revolutions In my essay I plan to argue that Thomas Kuhn was incorrect when he presented his theory that no paradigm is better than any other paradigm and how he believed that people who occupy different paradigms are in different universes, in his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. I believe that there is no valid deductive or inductive support for incommensurability, there are examples against it throughout the history of sciencethat do not exhibit the discontinuity and replacement of paradigms, as Kuhn s incommensurability thesis predicts, but rather continuity and supplementation. If this is correct, then there are no compelling epistemic reasons to believe that Kuhn s incommensurability thesis is true or probable. The argument that the point of the same kind terms changes or ceases from one theoretical context to another, it does not fundamentally mean that these two abstract frameworks are taxonomically or methodologically incommensurable. Kuhn s theory takes a relativist stance and uses it to make all theories and paradigms equal with none being better than the other. This poses a major problem because the hope of scientific research is best said as For a realist conception of scientific progress also wishes to assert that, by and large, later science improves on earlier science, in particular by approaching closer to the truth. This means that all realist scientist hope that by advancing our scientific knowledge we will eventually come closer to the truth about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Vegetarians Vs. Fad Diets How will you feel after gaining back the weight you spend money toward? Well, Fad diets have been around for a very long time, based mostly on half truths and wishful thinking of the authors. Some may have a bit of science to back them up, but the diets are so restrictive and difficult, no one can stick to them. Losing weight temporarily on a fad diet does not equal success. Diet success is defined as keeping that weight off permanently. If a fad diet is impossible to follow for very long, you ll just re gain all the weight. And much of the weight lost on extremely low calorie fad dietsis water. • 12. Borrelia Burgdorferi Research Paper Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorfer, this bacterium is transmitted to humans through ticks. Borrelia burgdorferi is a gram negative bacterium that belongs to the spirochetes class, its usually 1um wide but can be up to 10 25um long. Some of the structures that Borrelia burgdorferi have are the flagellum, which allows the bacterium to migrate through viscous fluids (i.e. blood) and burrow through tissues, the bacterium also has outer surface proteins that are OspA and OspC which play a direct role in the transmission of the bacteriainto the host cell. Bacteria in general do not have the limitations that viruses do, viruses must have a living host in order to reproduce. Most bacteria are able to grow on non living surfaces and live intercellularly. Lyme diseaseis easy to identify because of the bullseye that results from the tickbite infected with Borrelia burgdorfer. Viruses are extremely unique to the microbial world they are the smallest and simplest microbe. Virions are only 20 400nm in size, and they do not have any way to replicate outside the host cell. • 13. Troy and Trojan War Troy and Trojan War: Final Topic 2 Helen: What is beauty? Some may say Helen is and was the definition of beauty. Can beauty be born or be simply made by the Gods. Beauty in this epic tale in The Iliad had the power to make any man do anything, Helen being a famous female character in this ancient time made the power of beauty strike. In this period of time walked many strong warriors, many famous warriors. But they all seemed to let Helen has the power. When being this beautiful I believe it came with a big price. She was blamed for the war. She was called the innocent, the guilty, the dangerous, the sinful, the irresponsible, and the woman who launched a thousand ships . She was blamed because these men were fools to her beauty. A woman s beauty can t possibly be the cause for all this death and destruction. But in the epic tale of The Iliad, these men made Helen the most powerful one of them all. Some say she was the reasoning for all many innocent men who died, but why? Her beauty. Helen of Sparta was the cause of the whole war between the Trojans and the Achillians, which lasted for ten years. She was mortal and immortal, he father was told as being Zeus and her mother was the Leda, the beautiful queen of Sparta. Her mother was a swan so when having Helen she was in an egg. During this mission, Apollo 13experienced multiple issues, which caused the mission to end earlier than expected. One way that they did this was through keeping some of the scenes consistent to the real timing of the events. As a crucial issue within this account, Hill and Hanley wanted to keep this same timing in the movie, so they wanted to try to keep the running time in the film pretty close to the time on the clock and not have radio silence lasting for nine minutes or something (Apollo 13). Since long periods of silence is not always the best way to keep an audience s attention, the editors had to find ways to keep the audience engaged while still staying true to the real event, The whole sequence benefits from some great camera movement and crane shots which, combined with James Horner s score and sound design by Steve Flick and Chic Ciccolini, helped immensely to build the tension (Apollo 13). • 16. Developments in the Study of Cryptography Essay Since the beginning of civilization, humans have needed a way to communicate in secret. Whether it be a letter to a lover or a set of orders for an army, it would be paramount for these messages to arrive unknown and untouched. However at some point, a person could easily apprehend the message; perhaps a spy or the letter bearer, nevertheless the chance of the message being compromised would be quite high. Thus one would have to change the message to appear as meaningless nonsense to those others than the intended recipient. This idea formed the basis of cryptography, the backbone of digital security. Cryptography is the study and practice of secure communications between two parties usually in the presence of a malicious entity,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus by only knowing what the cipher was, one would know what the original message was. Early ciphers were primitive and involved the manipulation of the characters in a message. A transposition and substitution cipher was very common in the classical age before computers. A transposition cipher involved merely arranging the letters in a message while a substitution cipher involved changing the letters in a message to a different one in the alphabet or to a symbol. Julius Ceasar used a form of substitution cipher in which he simply changed the letter to its respected position three spaces in front of it in the alphabet. As one can imagine, such a cipher was easy to break just from analyzing the ciphertext, and thus more complicated ciphers involving mathematical theory were created. However as the advancement of cryptography continued, so did its contrary field of cryptanalysis, the interpretation of protocols. This arrived at the discovery of frequency analysis; the process in which the repetition of certain characters in a language is greater than those of other characters. Thus the frequency of certain meaningless characters in a ciphertext would be higher than those of other ones. This meant that a new method of encrypting messages had to be invented as any cipher could be broken. This new method involved putting a private key ( a string of characters) into the cipher so that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Morrison conveys his role to be vital by portraying him as a man with a golden heart, to be supportive to the characters around him, and with the struggle to reach manhood. To begin with, Paul D. s difficult hardships and story made him into a broken down man but with a heart of gold. In Sethe s view, Not even trying, he had become the kind of man who could walk into a house and make the women cry. Because with him, in his presence, they could. There was something blessed in his manner (11). This indicates that Paul D. wasn t just an ordinary man, he possessed of a particular quality that most mendidn t, which is a big heart. This demonstrates Sethe s comfortable state with Paul D. because it allows her to have a trustworthy individual of her own to fall back on. Later on in the production process, studios will have a greater idea of the quality of the film, making them less likely to sell the rights to more profitable sequels. Advanced rights to the entire portfolio of films mitigates this informational asymmetry and creates an options pricing model for Arundel. There is value in Arundel s right to forgo production of the sequel if they discover that the original is a flop. If Arundel chooses to forgo producing a sequel, in this model they are now only taking a $2M loss. To the movie studios, Arundel s proposal creates great value. By offering the cash for all movies in advance, Arundel is providing upfront financing to the cash hungry studios, allowing them the resources to pursue other projects, especially big budget blockbusters that have substantial negative costs. The guaranteed profit of the sequel rights fees abolishes some risk for the studios, even though it eliminates their potential upside. By purchasing the rights to an entire portfolio of films from the studios, it also serves Arundel to diversify away the risks of individual films, much like investing in diversified funds of market indexes. • 24. Comparing Three Different Classes of Vertebrates Introduction Chordates are an animal phylum that is classified by four main characteristics that they all obtain over the course of their lifespans. The first characteristic is the pharyngeal slits, which can be found in non vertebrates, allow substances to enter and exit (Speer 2000). The dorsal nerve cord serves as a connection between the brain and other muscles (Speer 2000). The notochord can be found below the nerve cord and acts as a support system (Speer 2000). Finally, the post anal tail comes out from the body from the opening of the anus (Speer 2000). One major characteristic that distinguishes Vertebrates from invertebrates is the backbone that is present in their bodies. Vertebrates also have two pair of appendages and have bilateral symmetry (Adojaan 2005). Along with a fully developed organ system, Vertebrates have a central and peripheral nervous system and a closed circulatory system (Adojaan 2005). Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are humans free to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels the actions of characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potterand the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is a certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their fates. On the contrary, the chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all expectation, to do what they want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467 1469), suggesting that whatever Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods. How Does Gruwell Show Courage Hidden Gems How often do you see a white teacher transform a class full of recalcitrant students from different races and backgrounds to a class full of great individuals? That is what happened in the movie Freedom Writers. Erin Gruwell is the white teacher and the students are class 203 of Woodrow Wilson High School. At the beginning, class 203 is just a bunch of people who hate learningand have no future. However, it all changes since the presence of Erin Gruwell. Nevertheless, the first empathy is shown when the students come to visit the Holocaust Museum. They are stunned by how they have so much better situation than the Holocaust survivors. From that moment, Marcus and Eva start to develop their empathy skill. There is a scene where a guy named Miguel comes up to the middle of the class and starts to read his journal. Miguel shares his struggle about his early life and how he is now happy that he has found a new home, class 203. And then, Marcus, a guy who seems very quiet and tough, approaches him and gives him his empathy. He shakes his hand, hugs him, and even sheds tears, showing that he empathizes for Miguel.. That scene warms me and I feel empathy for Miguel as well. A similar situation of empathy is also being displayed by Eva when she chooses to defend the truth by telling the court that Paco, her boyfriend is the one who killed the guy in the store instead of the black guy. By saying the truth, she betrays her own people but she does the right and that shows how she has changed and developed her empathy. According to Paul Wong s article about empathy he notes that ... individuals are more likely to be empathic to others, when they have experienced many hardships and are well acquainted with sorrows and sufferings. This is what I see in the movie, Marcus and Eva realize that they all came from the same background; that they must fight for their lives, dignity, and existence. Thus, both Marcus and Eva develop what Wong would call the experiential empathy which is a type of empathy that is developed when one has experienced other s difficulties. The strongest articles that support my stance surround the Canadian National Breast Screening Study (CNBSS), which is a randomized clinical trial started in 1980 which aimed to assess the differences in breast cancerprevalence in two primary groups of women aged 40 59. 89 835 women have participated in this study since its inception. The mortality ratio between the two groups at first look was 1.36. Both groups showed similar survival rates1. Upon the second evaluation, researchers acknowledged the benefit of improved detection of impalpable and even in situ breast carcinomas with screening, but were adamant that mammography played no role in reducing mortality rate2. The 25 year findings are of particular importance, as the CNBSS is now the longest running observational study of its kind. All cause mortality was 9477 or 10.6% in the follow up period3. This anecdote spans from a period of over 6 years (2003 2009), and in relation to our reading this week, exemplifies a company in the midst of a culture change. During the initial phase, the ROWE program was isolated from retail stores and exclusively offered to only the 4,000 headquarter employees (75% enrolled at the time of the case). The story of ROWE within the Best Buy organization has spawned favorable statistics within the company (e.g., productivity increases of 35 percent within 9 months, voluntary turnover drops of 52 90 percent, and overall increase in employee morale for departments within the program). Despite the warranted success of the program, the Best Buy enterprise continues to face some resistance and difficulties with extending the program beyond headquarters. Nevertheless, the key issues to be discussed are as follows: In regards to chapter 16, the process of organizational socialization starts at the selection process. Best Buy has stymied organizational culture shift by allowing the transition to be at the discretion of the department managers. Managers have displayed a dominant resistant to change. Therefore, how does leadership mold attitudes of managers to accommodate/facilitate a holistic cultural change? The feasibility of transferring the ROWE program to the retail ... Any written comments could be redacted. Any type of writing on the survey would have to be removed. To review the results of the first 11 questions then I will edit any and all handwriting and then go over them when time allowed, they are not to leave my presence according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Extramural Research course Protecting Human Research Participants . I even had to go as far as writing in my IRB form that they would be locked in my desk drawer at home before the review board would approve it. As far as the second questionnaire, there will not be one because time will not allow. The weeks are going fast and the surveys still have not been disbursed. I left the MBA time table that is attached in your church mail box along with a new Host Approval Form to be filled out and returned ASAP so I can get that to the review board and replace the one in my dissertation. If you disagreed with this project, then why was this not brought to my attention on December 8, 2016 when I met with you and Cindy. Do you recall you and agreed to meet me at the preschool then because Cindy and you would both be there doing interviews. • 54. The Horse Fair And Great Blue Horses, By Rosa Bonheur The Horse Fair and Great Blue Horses In this paper I will compare and contrast two paintings, one from French artist Rosa Bonheur and another from German painter Franz Marc. Marc was an expressionist artist who was a pioneer in the birth of abstract art at the beginning of the twentieth century. (Pioch, 2002) Bonheur was a Realist artist who made a great impact on the painting style of realism during the ninetieth century. Bonheur was about embracing reality and nature, while Marc was about evoking moods through the subject matters and colors choices in his paintings. These two artist styles are particularly different from one another, but yet they still have similarities throughout their paintings. This paper will highlight the similarities and differences between these two artists, making the theme reality verses perception . The first painting that I have chosen is The Horse Fair by French artist Rosa Bonheur. This painting is considered to be Bonheur s best known painting . Their laws were enacted right after their separation and freedom from the former Soviet Union. As the time goes by, each country was able to create their respective gun laws, which are based on their current needs and situation of the country. Each country aimed to create a government that enforces the laws of the land, which will strengthen their sovereignty as independent countries. Estonia, for example, enacted The Weapons Act in 2001 that establishes legal procedures in relation to ammunition and hand handling (Riigi Teataja n.p.). This law covers the granting of permission for ammunition and weapon, which are intended for civilian use. According to the law s general provisions, the weapons of the civilians must only be used for specific purposes, such as engagement in sports, hunting, and for ensuring personal safety. Personal safety could be the most important reason for some Estonians, as to why they opt to own a gunat home. However, the law has certain provisions that regulate the classifications of guns that private individuals can own. Civilians are not allowed to own a firearm... This is due to various factors, such as the migration crisis in Europe, the threat of terror attacks, and even the sanctions that were applied to Russia. The amending law generally states that firearms are sources of danger against the public and that gun ownership must only be allowed based on the people s needs. It was noted that the more guns being allowed to be used by the public means that there is a higher chance that they might be stolen, lost, and end up in the trafficking of illegal ...
