2. WP objectives
• WP 5 will focus on experimental archaeology and how experiments can
contribute to make the visitor experience at archaeological open air museums
even better.
• Large trans-national experiments are important, but there must also be a
presentation aspect in the experiments (not just scientific value).
• The experiments will be defined in cooperation with experimental archaeology
experts and universities, so that the experiments of this project add value and
are not just replications of previous experiments.
Target groups:
• Specialists from Universities and other academic institutions; archaeologists;
students
• Craftspeople
• Visitors.
2
3. Main goals
1) SETTING STANDARDS FOR EXPERIMENTAL ACTIONS – A BOOK OF GOOD
PRACTICES
• Exeter will produce an online booklet for partners to use.
2) EXPERIMENTS AS PART OF STORY TELLING AND DEMONSTRATIONS
• Documentation and experience sharing with other partners – with added value
to visitors in mind.
3) EXPERIMENTAL ACTIONS
• Presentation aspect; experiments should have immediate result on the visitor
experience, or be used as visitor attractions by themselves.
• Research and final publication (online)
• Our objective is to get one step up in experimental archaeology.
3
4. Products
• A book of good practices on the methodology of experimental archaeology
• Website www.experimentalarchaeology.eu . The site will be used, for
example, to promote and publish our Experimental Actions.
• WP progress and results reports, made in “half a year” chapters.
• Involvement of university researchers and students (whenever possible).
• Outcomes of the Experimental Actions:
3.1 Everyday life of the past (Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Middle Ages)
3.2 Clothing
3.3 Tools and processes
3.4 Architecture
4
5. Experimental Actions
• Each experimental action should be documented in a form of a report to the
coordinators of the WP. We expect some (printed/online) articles, but the
minimum requirement is a report on project website (blog).
Example: http://openarch.eu/work-packages/activities/skinning-cutting-and-cooking-reindeer-using-only-bone-and-antler-tools
• A temporary exhibition about the Experimental Actions will be produced to be
put up in partner museums. The exhibition will be designed and produced
electronically, so that it can be published on screen or printed out as
posters/placards. (Linked to WP 7 – Communication & Dissemination)
• Within each action, there should be some communication, travel or exchange
between some of the partners.
