There are two main types of wound healing: primary intention and secondary intention. Primary intention occurs when wound edges are close together, allowing for faster healing in four stages - haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Secondary intention occurs when wound edges are not opposed, requiring healing from the bottom up also through the four stages. The larger fibrin mesh and more intense inflammation in secondary intention fills the wound with granulation tissue needed for epithelial cells to proliferate and cover the wound during remodeling and contraction.
