Why does teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases remain high in the U.S.
What can healthcare providers do that decrease the rate of teen pregnancy and STD’s in the US?
Adolescent Sex
Teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases continue to be an important healthcare issue in the 20
th
century.
Although teen pregnancy rates have dropped there are still concerns and healthcare problems that are associated with teen pregnancy. Often times they are afraid to discuss sex with their parents and deny will deny being sexually active at all.
There are problems that manifest with
adolescent pregnancy for the mother and often times the infants as well.
The high school drop out rate among pregnant high school students is approximated at about
70 percent and is cited as the number reason teens drop out prior to graduation.
There is also an estimated $7 billion revenue cost associated with teen pregnancy in the United States alone. The risk of young people engaging in early sexual intercourse is largely due to the lack of sexual education, peer pressure and social influences.
Chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, primary and secondary syphilis, and hepatitis B virus infection are amid the highest reported STDs with chlamydia noted as the most dominate which is likely due to the fact that there is more vigorous testing.
Some of the other noted STDs are genital herpes, trichomoniasis, Chancroid, and HPV.
Often times and without any signs or symptoms present more than one pathogen is involved with sexually transmitted diseases. Typically the only environments in which there remain viable pathogens is the bodily fluids from the genitourinary tract requiring there to be intimate contact for them to be acquired.
Although it affects men and women chlamydia is predominately seen in young women and is the most common nationally known sexually transmitted disease in the U.S.
Bodily fluids from the genitourinary tract are typically the environments in which there remain viable pathogens, so intimate contact is generally required to obtain STDs.
Chlamydia infections are asymptomatic in most women and can be transmitted during childbirth with the
potential of a newborn developing pneumonia as a complication.
If it is not treated
chlamydia can spread to the uterus and fallopian tube creating further health problems and permanent damage to the reproductive system.
Teaching abstinence is the most affective way to prevent pregnancy and STDs but sexuality and curiosity of sex begins at a young age and exploration into sexuality is a natural part of personal development.

INTRODUCTION
Jessica was enrolled in one of our human sexuality classes. One day after class, she asked whether she could stop in during office hours to discuss something “private.” Over the years, we have learned that “private” can mean many things: a student just found out she is pregnant, is being abused by a romantic partner, or is concerned about a sexual disorder. In Jessica’s case, though, it was a concern that she might have an STI.
Jessica went on to describe a sexual encounter with Rodney that culminated in penile-vaginal sex. Shortly afterward, Jessica noticed a rash on her inner thighs and became alarmed. As soon as she described her concern about having contracted an STI, I knew I would have to refer Jessica to a clinician at the campus health center for testing and diagnosis. I am an educator, not a medical doctor, and I know my limitations. Still, I could not refer her immediately for fear that she would think I was uninterested and be disinclined to discuss with me other concerns she might have in the future. Consequently, we discussed the reasons for her concern—the rash appeared, Rodney had not used a condom, they had not employed any other method of birth control, she met Rodney only the week before at a party and she did not really know him well—and we explored any other symptoms she described. Although I did not feel qualified to discuss whether Jessica had an STI, I did take advantage of our private time together to talk about the wisdom of coitus without the use of a condom and/or any other method of birth control and explored with her the decision to engage in coitus with someone she had only recently met.
It turned out that all Jessica had was a rash caused by nylon underpants she wore during her weekly jog. The relief on her face said it all, and I doubt that Jessica forgot that scare the next time she was faced with a decision regarding whether to engage in sex. That is not to say that she will refrain or become abstinent, although those are certainly possibilities and decisi ...

- Adolescence is a period of transition. It is a journey from childhood to adulthood. It is marked with endings and beginnings. During transition, it is normal to experience feelings of excitement, confusion, uncertainty and even isolation
- It is a beginning because adolescents are learning new ways of being and behaving. It is also a period of awakening. It is discovering, new images of oneself, new abilities, new relationships and new insights.
Adolescents today are exposed to growing number of more diverse threats and risks than any other generation has ever been.
When girls and women are violated on the streets, in buses and in isolated mills, we feel naturally outraged. Yet, when they get abused, raped and victimized in the safety of their own homes, we remain unnaturally silent. Domestic Violence accounts for 50% of all reported crimes against women in India. One in every three women is sexually, psychologically and physically violated by her male partner. Many of these women are young brides, less than 18 years old who suffer in silence grappling with what society believes should be a private and guarded matter. Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles.
Gender equality, also known as sex equality, sexual equality, or equality of the genders, is the view that everyone should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on their gender.

This paper examine violence against women emanates from the social hypothesis of superiority of men over women. Insubordination of women legitimizes gender violence and grants social sanction to the ignoble treatment meted out to women. Manifestations of violence encompass physical aggression, such as blows of varying intensity, burns, sexual abuse and rape, physiological violence through insults, humiliation, coercion, blackmail, economic and emotional threats and control over speech, action and behavior. In extreme cases the result of this violence is death. The incidence of violence prevalent in man woman relationship takes place in the context of the family, state and society. In most cases the male aggression towards women and girls remains tacit, hidden or unrevealed. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Source of women’s vulnerability
It is important to note that:
Men’s power over women is the root cause of violence against women
and increased HIV risk for women.
Balanced power between women and men is healthy, safe and
benefits both.
The community’s silence perpetuates violence against women and its
connection to HIV/AIDS.
Violence against women and its connection to HIV/AIDS is now a
community, not private issue.
4. Social determinants to
women’s vulnerability
There is a disproportionate burden of HIV infection within the lives of
women and girls as compared to men.
Typical descriptions of the social determinants affecting women’s
vulnerability include disadvantages based on gender, economic status.
marital status, education, and cultural norms tend to have a restrictive
effect on women’s sexual decision-making behaviour
These barriers overlap to provide unique effects that influence behavior in
general and sexual behaviour decision making in particular.
Cultural, and societal factors responsible for health inequalities affect the
chances of women’s ability to successfully navigate the HIV/AIDS
prevention process.
5. Contd…
Both women and men are victims of the social construction of gender, but
men's risk of HIV infection is primarily determined by their own proactive
behaviour, whereas women's is largely beyond their control.
Nevertheless, the economic and cultural factors play an important role not
only in situations of poverty.
A study in two districts of Matabeleland province(Bubi and Lupane)
detected greater vulnerability to HIV/aids among women who had been
married, had a job and were well off economically.
The inequitable sexual interaction between men and women continue to
have grave consequences, highlighting the importance of addressing
gender-related expectations and attitudes.
7. The plight of disabled women
Sinqobile is six months pregnant now. She leaves
with her 3 year old young sister. She cannot visit
the clinic which is 12 km away from the village for
antenatal care.
She can only go to fetch water from a well which is
5 km from her place of residence.
8. Social vulnerability of women
Safer sexual behaviour among women is determined by their confidence and
capacity to negotiate for condoms and safe sexual position with a partner in
question.
The trajectory of gender inequality is a super structural factor that affects
women’s economic participation and culminates in their inability to purchase
food and other life necessities which in turn lead to some of them indulging in
risk behaviours (unprotected transactional sex) which expose them to HIV
infection.
The extend of this susceptibility requires a specific need for strengthened
interventions that directly include HIV and STD service delivery as a
component of women’s health care and social service delivery.
9. Contd…
Women's increased biological vulnerability is compounded by their
subordinate social status. A woman is more likely to have sexual contact
even though she does not want to, whether she is raped or because she
lacks the power to refuse her partner's demands (forced sex).
When the vagina is not lubricated, the tissue tears more easily, increasing
women's risk of exposure to HIV.
The expectation that girls should be virgins and the stigma that is
attached to female sexuality often prevent sexually active women from
accessing health services and information. For example, due to the
pressure for girls to remain virgins until marriage, studies show a
significant number of adolescents who engage in risky sexual practices,
including anal and oral sex, in order to preserve their virginity,
yet placing themselves at a very higher risk of contracting HIV and or other
STIs.
10. Contd…
The belief that women have sex solely for reproductive purposes while
men need sexual release also creates obstacles for HIV/AIDS prevention
programs that promote female negotiation with their partners and this
frequently leaves the female partner with less power and more vulnerable to
contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS.
Boys or men who do not comply with the expectation of demonstrating
their sexual prowess often face ridicule and questioning of their
masculinity.
As a result, boys and men are more likely to engage in risky behaviour, and
less likely to seek information about their sexual health because it involves
admitting their lack of knowledge, an indication of their sexual inexperience.
This places all of their female sexual partners, who could be faithful to them
and them only,
at a very high risk to HIV contraction.
11. Women as victims of gender norms
Men are more likely than women to partake in
substance use which is associated with more
prolific sexual activity and sexual violence,
placing their female sexual partners, who will be
at the receiving end, at the risk of HIV infection.
Men frequently demand sex after drinking
alcohol, creating additional obstacles for female
partners to initiate or negotiate condom use.
13. Contd…
Cross generational sex has significant consequences for the spread of
the HIV/AIDS, pandemic, placing young women at an increased risk of
infection.
It is mainly caused by the belief among men that younger women
are more passive, more fertile, and less likely to be infected with HIV
and the belief among young women that an older man will be a better
and more stable economic provider for herself and her children.
Women are often reluctant to raise discussion regarding sexual desires
and protection, particularly when they have invested in a relationship
which they depend on financially and have children.
14. FREEDOM OR FEAR
How does the threat of violence limits women’s lives?
It is important to note that violence against women has
many negative effects.
Again, the threat and fear of violence or men’s use of power
over women affects all women
It is unfair that women in our communities have to fear
violence from male folks since it diminishes their choices and
freedom.
15. Group work
Complete the stories by deciding how the characters
in each situation will respond/do.
Are the decisions based on fear or freedom?
16. Contd..
What is the difference between the two situations?
Can a woman do what she needs or wishes to do.
Why and Why not?
Can the man do what he needs or wishes to do?
Why and why not?
17. Conclusions
Social and cultural definitions of gender shape
female and male behaviour, particularly in the
realm of sexuality.
Throughout the world, the unequal social
status of women, fear or lack of freedom limits
their lives and places them at higher risks for
contracting HIV/AIDS.
