As a 1-to-1 high school, we have just switched from laptops to iPads for each student. I was hired as the iPad technology coordinator at Southeast High School. To know where you are going, I feel it is important to know where you have been.
When you think of the 20th century classroom, what are some words that come to mind? (ask the audience – then show) Words like lecture, worksheets, textbooks, chalkboards, handwriting, pens/paper come to mind and some of these words may still incorporate the 21st century classroom. But now, classrooms have evolved.
So now, in the 21st Century, what are some words that come to mind? (show mine as they talk about theirs) At Southeast high school, these are the words that describe the learning experience now.
All because of one little tool. The iPad!
It takes time…coordination….and probably a little stress. I think this guy is probably stressed because he has a Dell. With a little preplanning and staff preparation, the reward will completely be worth it.
Students have found creative ways to use their iPads while at school and at home. We provide cases that will (hopefully) protect against cat fur.
Some students still feel comfortable using pen/paper but the iPad is never far from their workstations.
Classrooms will look more appealing and exciting because of the effective implementation of the iPad.As theiPad technology coordinator, it was my job to try out and suggest apps to the entire staff. I’m going to give you an overview of 12 apps that we have used within our first year as an iPad school. I’m hoping that this will help trigger some ways that you can use the iPads within your schools.
iBooks is what a lot of teachers use for textbooks and view pdf files. You can highlight, make notes, use a dictionary, etc. And the best part is it’s free and there are some good free books for students.
Students will see a screen that looks like their own books and have access to customize what they see to assist with their reading.
Explain Everything is an app that allows you to annotate, animate, and record explanations for interactive lessons, assignments, tutorials, and presentations. You can then export a video directly to Youtube, or as a pdf. Teachers can easily create their own “Khan Academy like” tutorial videos for students in their classes. Students can use this app to create a dynamic, interactive, project that demonstrates their comprehension of the subject matter.
Quickoffice Pro HD is one of the most popular Office Suites available for the ipad today. Students and teachers alike, can easily create Word, Powerpoint, and Excel documents on their ipad. It easily supports and integrates with most major cloud services such as Google Docs and Dropbox. It also can easily convert documents to pdf inside the app. What shines the most on this app compared with other similar apps, is its user interface. It’s drag and drop file system shows off the advantages of working with a touch screen device.
Paperport Notes is a digital note taking app that allow you to combine documents, web content, audio, photos, typed text, and handwritten notes into a single document. It is free and is incredibly easy to use. A couple things that set this app apart from other note taking apps is its cloud support for Google Docs and Dropbox, and how much you can do with the app while remaining completely free to use.
Pinnacle Studio is the premier video editing app for the ipad. Although this app is more expensive than imovie, its features and useability more than make up for the added cost. Editing video on an ipad for a presentation or project can be cumbersome and hard to do. Pinnacle Studio offers a great user experience with a more robust choice of animations and effects. Our video production’s class unanimously chose this over imovie as our choice for video editing on the ipad.
Educreations website and learning community embrace the tagline of “teach what you know, learn what you don’t”. It is a whiteboard app that allows you to record audio, and insert photos to create learning tutorials. What makes them special besides being free to use, is the always growing community of lessons on a variety of subject matter that are available to everyone. Teachers can create their own virtual classroom for their students to view and use their created in Educreations.
Socrative is a free, student response system that works incredibly well. There is a teacher and student version of the app. Teachers create quizzes and tests for their students and can even control the pace at which the questions are delivered to the students. Teachers have reported cutting their time spent grading by as much as 80%. This app is a must have for any school that is fortunate enough to be 1:1 with Ipads.
Istudiez Pro is a digital student planner that helps students organize their classes, assignments, and grades. It is a complete all in one planner that allows students to sync their data across multiple devices and comes with ical integration. Students can instantly track grades, assignments due, and get daily and weekly overviews of everything on their schedules.
Nearpod is an amazing app for the ipad that allows teachers to create engaging multimedia enhanced lessons for the ipad. They can control the speed at which the class moves through the lesson because the students ipads mirror what is on the teacher ipad. You can insert quizzes and receive realtime results from the students. You can insert video and audio, or a whiteboard to have the students “draw something”!
Nearpod has a teacher and student edition and both are free to download. You can create and store up to 10 presentations for free.
Itunes U opens up a wealth of knowledge to everyone and has many resources that are available and free of charge. K-12 districts can now have their own space on Itunes U. Teachers can create their own courses and content for students and place all materials needed to complete the course right in Itunes U.
DocAS is a pdf viewer which allows you to view, annotate, and organize pdf’s on your ipad. You can also use it as a Wi-Fi drive and file manager. It integrates easily with most of the major cloud services such as Google Docs and Dropbox. This is a major component of any teacher who is striving to achieve a paperless classroom.
The last app I’m going to show is eNotebook. eNotebook is a file manager that integrates with Google Docs and Dropbox. eNotebook also allows you to annotate over pdf’, Word documents, and Powerpoint documents. It protects the original file and creates a separate annotated copy, and allows the user to seamlessly switch back and forth between the two. It has a great drag and drop interface which both students and teachers will enjoy.
Just to review what we’ve discussed: We understand that iPad implementation takes a lot of pre-planning. Use this time to research apps that may work for your or your district. Talk with others who have possibly used an iPad in their classroom. (Don’t be ashamed to ask for help…why reinvent the wheel?) And lastly…and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL. Have fun. Thanks for listening and I hope this has helped make you iPad experience a little easier in the classroom.
