Employers in many sectors are experiencing
shortages of skilled workers

million skilled trades people
By 2031 Canada will experience a shortage of 2.3
million skilled trades workers
8. What is WIST?
The Women in Skilled Trades Program (WIST) is
specifically designed to facilitate the entry of
women without prior experience or knowledge into
the millwright/machining trade and meet current
labour market shortages.
WEST, in partnership with St. Clair College
received funding from the Government of Ontario
through the Ontario Women’s Directorate /
Canadian Women’s Foundation to offer a WIST
CNC/Industrial Mechanic Millwright Pre-
Apprenticeship Certificate Program to prepare
women for employment in the trades.
9. What is a Millwright?
A Millwright is a tradesperson who installs,
builds, maintains and repairs industrial
machinery and mechanical equipment.
Millwrights work in a variety of industries and can
pursue training & develop additional skills in
steel fabrication, welding, machining,
electronics, hydraulics or pneumatics.
Think of them like a car mechanic but for large-
scale machines.

12. Program Eligibility
- 16 years and over
- Ontario Grade 12 graduation Transcript or
equivalent
- Good Math Skills
- Computer Literate
- Resident of & legally able to work in Ontario
- Demonstrate the necessary skill, aptitudes and
commitment to succeed in the trade

20 weeks in-class training curriculum
4 weeks Employment Training
12 week Industry Work Placement (paid)
