The last four of the 32 teeth to surface in the mouth, wisdom teeth
received their name because they make their appearance in the
late teens or early twenties, when a person has matured past
adolescence and has begun to acquire adult “wisdom.” In many
cases, there’s not enough room in the mouth to accommodate
these third molars at the back of the upper and lower jaws.

- Soft tissue impaction, in which the tooth has erupted through
the bone, but the gum covers all or part of the crown, - Partial
bony impaction, in which part of the tooth’s crown remains
submerged below the gum and jawbone, and
- Complete bony impaction, in which the tooth has not erupted
from the jawbone.
