SQL Database Federations provide a sharding-as-a-service capability for elastically scaling out relational data in Windows Azure. A federation comprises a root database and federation member databases (shards) that store distributed data based on a distribution key range. Transact-SQL statements and dynamic management views provide capabilities for defining, managing, and querying across federations and their member databases.

This document discusses key challenges in performance testing Flex-based applications and provides recommendations for tool selection. Some main points:
- Flex applications are challenging to test due to their rich interactive nature and data exchanges between client and server, posing potential performance bottlenecks.
- There is a lack of tools that can properly recognize and replay the Action Message Format (AMF) protocol used in Flex. Few tools have support for the latest Flex/AMF versions.
- When selecting a performance testing tool, key considerations include whether it can record and replay AMF, support various testing operations, and handle the latest Flex version. Proper tool selection is important to identify bottlenecks and optimize application performance.

Continuous Integration is a wonderful and popular practice in the software development universe. Yet, for whatever reason, it seems much less commonly utilized in the SharePoint community. SharePoint (naturally) throws a few wrinkles into the process, but no substantial roadblocks, and the benefits of CI can be realized just as well on SharePoint projects as anywhere else. In this session, you'll learn why you should implement a CI process and then see how to do it using TFS and Visual Studio.

JavaScript code can be added inline, embedded, or externally linked in HTML pages. Common JavaScript elements include objects, properties, methods, events, functions, variables, expressions, conditions, loops, and arrays. The DOM (Document Object Model) represents HTML documents and allows JavaScript to access and modify elements dynamically. Cookies are used by JavaScript to store and retrieve information on the client-side.
This document provides an introduction to JavaScript by explaining what it is, how it differs from Java, how it works within web browsers to make pages interactive, and some common uses of JavaScript including form validation and manipulating HTML elements. It discusses how JavaScript code is embedded in HTML pages and executed on the client-side, and provides some simple examples of JavaScript statements and using JavaScript with HTML forms.
This document provides an overview of JavaScript, including that it is not the same as Java, how it can be included in HTML, its basic syntax like comments and data types, core objects and methods, functions, events, and manipulating the DOM. It describes where JavaScript code can be placed, basic programming constructs like loops and conditionals, and built-in objects like Math, Strings, Dates, and the Window.
Developing hybrid SharePoint apps that run on-premise and in the cloud - Bram...Bram de Jager
With the new SharePoint App model running outside the SharePoint worker process it introduces new authentication models. Things fail. It’s a fact of life. But that doesn’t mean that your applications and services need to fail. In this talk, David Prinzing described a solution architecture that has been proven to deliver amazing performance at scale with continuous availability on Amazon Web Services. You can’t just move your application to the cloud and expect this – you need to design for it. Technology selections include Amazon Web Services, Ubuntu Linux, Apache Cassandra for the database, Dropwizard for providing RESTful web services, and AngularJS as the foundation for an HTML5 web application. Visual appeal and desktop-like reaction to user input were key elements in Web 2.0, powered by AJAX. The next generation user interface is active - presenting data and events in real time, driven by server push technology. This session demonstrates how ADF Active Data Service (ADS) and the BAM Data Control are leveraged to create an active UI. Messages arriving on JMS, through HTTP, from Complex Event Processing and from email servers are pushed to the browser, updating charts, tables and even causing popups to open. The session demonstrates a Chat implementation integrated in a Fusion Web application. It also shows how Database Query Result Change Notification and ADS allow events to be pushed from database all the way to user interface.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Building Production Ready Search Pipelines with Spark and MilvusZilliz
Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject.
We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup.
Further emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in developing XSLT, or schemas such as XSD and Schematron. We will address the techniques and strategies adopted to create prompts for generating code, explaining code, or refactoring the code, and the results achieved.
The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring.
The presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of AI usage in XML development, providing attendees with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions. Whether you’re at the early stages of adopting AI or considering integrating it in advanced XML development, this presentation will cover all levels of expertise.
By highlighting the potential advantages and challenges of integrating AI with XML development tools and languages, the presentation seeks to inspire thoughtful conversation around the future of XML development. We’ll not only delve into the technical aspects of AI-powered XML development but also discuss practical implications and possible future directions.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
