Windows Phone 7 was announced in 2010 and released by Microsoft as the successor to Windows Mobile. It featured a new "Metro" interface and supported 25 languages at launch. Several updates were released between 2011-2013, including Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8 which moved to the Windows NT kernel and supported new hardware. While the Windows Phone platform struggled with a lack of applications, Microsoft made efforts to attract developers through programs and marketing.
