Strategies and Techniques to Communicate Effectively and With Confidence
Promotion and stepping into a leadership role requires a great deal of communication, both professionally and personally. Leaders must understand
the importance of this skill and continuously engage in strategies to improve their interpersonal skills and build confidence, whilst retaining their
technical expertise and industry knowledge. The development of high level communication skills will produce opportunities for aspiring leaders to
demonstrate their leadership capabilities and maximise their potential for promotion.
Effective communication is an essential component of professional success whether it is at an interpersonal, inter-group, intra-group, organisational,
or external level. Therefore, a person cannot become a great leader without mastering the skills of a great communicator.
This workshop provides strategies and techniques to build an influential communication skillset and the platform to network with fellow leaders.
Participants will improve and refine their abilities to communicate compelling ideas effectively, lead with confidence, and fulfil their career potential.
Explore:
Building confidence in a challenging environment:
• Establishing techniques to build and exude confidence
• Finding the authentic route to self-confidence
• Reiterating the importance of finding confidence in following your instincts
Developing an advanced suite of communication skills:
• Using powerful language to influence change
• Communicating constructive criticism efficiently as a leader
• Tactics for challenging negotiations
Tailoring communication for different channels:
• Understanding the varied channels used in communication
• Techniques to create a clear, common dialogue to facilitate inclusive communication
• Articulating the values of communication amongst a team
Connecting with your values to communicate a compelling vision
• Recognising self-awareness as an essential foundation for effective communication
• Exercises to realise individual authentic leadership style
• Trusting and following through decisions

Pre-Summit Workshop 8 March2016
ABOUT THE EVENT
Western Australia has one of the highest employment rates of women, making up 68% of the public sector workforce in 2010 and 44% overall.
However, despite these statistics women are significantly under-represented in senior leadership roles. In recent years, there has been progress in the
recognition of female candidates for executive positions; however, there is room for improvement.
The 3rd Annual Women in Leadership Western Australia Summit 2016 explores these complex and varied obstacles faced by women in the
workforce and delivers practical strategies and solutions relevant to both current and emerging female leaders. It provides practical guidance on how
to optimise leadership effectiveness in order to stimulate career growth and satisfaction.
Coveted advice and inspirational stories from accomplished women will provide delegates with a range of strategies and tools to overcome common
career challenges. Speakers will also share experiences on how to improve leadership effectiveness whilst creating a balanced personal and
professional life. Register early to secure your place and be part of this progressive and inspiring learning and networking opportunity.

“Mastering resilience in the public eye”
Being a leader is exciting, challenging, and often very
visible, therefore it is important for leaders to maintain a
positive, resilient attitude. As a breast cancer survivor and
Mayor of the fastest growing local authority in Western
Australia, Tracey understands all too well the importance of
developing resilience. Explore:
• Finding strategies to improve resilience
• Dealing with work challenges and maintaining focus
• Keeping a positive mindset

“Know who you are and what you want be”
Defining moments are sometimes things that you create
and sometimes are thrust upon you. Nevertheless, in order
to make the most of them you need to have a firm grasp
of who you are, who you want to be, and what matters to
you. If you are able to establish and respect your priorities,
it is easier to make a decision when you come to cross-
roads. Lara will discuss:
• Knowing yourself and establishing solid priorities
• Testing decisions against the key things that matter to you
• Ensuring you don’t close doors before you make an
educated decision

“Leading with purpose and integrity”
An effective leader is authentic, hardworking and fuelled
with vision and positive energy. Every workplace is complex
in its own way and hosts an array of challenges, so it is
important for leaders to employ a flexible approach to their
leadership style. Rebecca has been a senior level executive
across a number of government departments and knows
the importance of leading with integrity and humility. She
will explore:
• Mastering strengths as a leader and identifying your
weaknesses
• Maintaining authenticity in intimidating circumstances
• Empowering and inspiring a productive vision and
achieving goals as a team

“Be brave, take a risk”
When life takes you down an unexpected path, you have the
power to choose your attitude; you can give up, or you can
take advantage of a fresh set of opportunities. Once you have
chosen your attitude (hint: it’s the latter), you have to be brave
and learn to navigate a diverse, new path. Nicole will reflect
on her own experience and discuss how to embrace being
thrust into unfamiliar territory, focusing on:
• Embracing a career change
• Taking risks and being brave enough to succeed
• Understanding calculated risks

Establishing your own balance
One of the most significant challenges of being a successful
leader is balancing work and life. This is because there is no
single formula for establishing this balance, and it is always
subject to change. As a result, strategies must be put in
place so leaders can remain productive, whilst managing
competing priorities and continuing to take steps towards
leadership and career goals. This panel will explore:
• Taking measurable steps to recognise your unique goals
and priorities
• Strategies for productivity at work and at home
• Reaching career goals without losing sight of your life goals

“Leading a team under tough circumstances”
In order to be a great leader, you must be able to adapt
and take action when placed in a difficult situation. The
implementation of positive strategies in times of pressure and
uncertainty is a necessary skill in a leadership role. Elizabeth
knows from personal experience the benefits of these
strategies. She will discuss:
• Effective leadership strategies to best serve your
employee’s needs
• Tools to take control in a negative situation and employ
positive initiatives
• Not letting all experiences define you and impact negatively

Authentic leadership style - What is your style and
how can you lead most effectively?
All leaders have strengths and weaknesses, whether they
are an executive leader or aspire to step into that role.
Successful leadership starts with recognising these skills
(or flaws) and using this knowledge to lead authentically. In
addition, taking the time to understand a team and being
flexible with a leadership approach will allow a leader to
effectively influence change. Judy will explore:
• Leading authentically by recognising strengths and
weaknesses
• Strategies to lead as both an introvert and an extrovert

political history. She stayed in this role for two years
before stepping down to have her first child. In this

added obstacle of internal and external unconscious bias,
the need for support structures is even more important
than ever. Chantel believes that mentors, sponsors, and
networking are an integral part a successful leadership
career. Explore:
• Establishing and building mutually beneficial
relationships
• Networking for self-promotion and to seek business

Navigating office politics and improving
workplace culture
A productive workplace has a positive culture and
is enriched by quality relationships that underpin a
harmonious team environment. In many cases this is
achievable, but occasionally, unconscious bias can
create a negative work environment. These unintentional
prejudices are sometimes observable both externally and
internally and have the ability to affect the way people
interact and perform. This panel will discuss:
• Strategies to avoid unconscious bias
• Enduring and navigating negative workplace culture
• Taking steps to create positive relationships

Strategies and Techniques for Developing Resilience and Emotional Intelligence in Leadership Roles
Taking on a leadership role is a great responsibility, especially when considering the tight deadlines, office politics and constantly high expectations.
These expectations, both internal and external, further increase the stress of a highly demanding role, and necessitate the implementation of
resilience and emotional intelligence. Without harnessing strategies and techniques to keep their emotions in check and maintain a cool and
balanced approach to work, leaders are less efficient and team productivity decreases.
Developing resilience and improving emotional intelligence will enable a leader to work well under pressure, respond proactively to stress triggers,
and bounce back when things don’t go to plan. This interactive workshop is aimed at women in leadership roles and those aspiring to improve their
leadership skill set. Participants will develop a greater understanding of how to lead more effectively and react more efficiently to those undesirable
circumstances that will occur intermittently throughout every career. Explore:
Techniques to remain self-aware in a demanding environment:
• Recognising your emotional strengths and weaknesses
• Strategies to improve productivity under pressure
• Harnessing a positive approach to deadline driven work
Understanding stress and minimising its effect on team productivity:
• Improving the ability to recognise triggers for stress
• Developing a stress relief action plan
• Leading a team in stressful and demanding circumstances
Strategies to improve emotional intelligence and (in turn) enhance efficiency:
• Defining emotional intelligence in the workplace
• Developing key strategies to maintain wellbeing and mental health
• Strengthening emotional intelligence to build resilience
Building, improving and maintaining resilience:
• Key tactics for coping and bouncing back from undesirable career set-backs
• Establishing a strong set of key self-management techniques
• Embracing new and unexpected circumstances
Expert Facilitator: Judy McGinn Director
Achieve Real Change
Judy is a leadership coach, counsellor, trainer and education consultant with over 30 years’ experience in the human services and personal
development industry.
Judy runs her own business, Achieve Real Change, as well as working as a Leadership Coach at both Coach in a Box and Leadership WA. She enjoys
the diversity of working with individuals in corporate, government, non-government and community sectors at middle, senior management and executive
levels. Organizations include Mars, Mondelez, Toll, Energy Australia, Medibank Private, BankWest, and State Edn Depts (WA, Vic, NSW SA).
In June 2013 Judy received her accreditation as an Empowerment Life Coach in the US to further develop her skills in transformative growth
methodology. Her area of expertise lies in inspiring a person, or a group of people to take the risk to go for their deepest dream, to confront and
transform the limiting beliefs that may surface, and cultivate the courage to bring their vision to fruition.
Prior to relocating to Perth Judy was based in the Kimberley region of Western Australia for 16 years where she held positions in management,
consultancy, counselling and education. This enabled her to develop an intricate knowledge of cultural awareness and practical applications to both
people growth and strategic project development, as well as leading innovative solutions to community social issues. In 2009 her leadership enabled
the development and implementation of a model designed to assist with the “closing the gap” agenda for Indigenous Australians which won the
prestigious Ben Drayton Award for Initiatives in Aboriginal Education, WA.
Judy uses her key understandings in personal development, psychology and the basic human need for connectedness, as a catalyst for behavioural
change. Her vision for others is based on the belief that too often when taking that next step we focus on what needs to get done, without looking at
who we need to become, in order to really make it.

Pre-Summit Workshop 8 March2016 ABOUT THE EVENT Western Australia has one of the highest employment rates of women, making up 68% of the public sector workforce in 2010 and 44% overall. However, despite these statistics women are significantly under-represented in senior leadership roles. The 3rd Annual Women in Leadership Western Australia Summit 2016 explores these complex and varied obstacles faced by women in the workforce and delivers practical strategies and solutions relevant to both current and emerging female leaders. It provides practical guidance on how to optimise leadership effectiveness in order to stimulate career growth and satisfaction. Coveted advice and inspirational stories from accomplished women will provide delegates with a range of strategies and tools to overcome common career challenges. Speakers will also share experiences on how to improve leadership effectiveness whilst creating a balanced personal and professional life. • 6. 9.00 - 4.30 Strategies and Techniques for Developing Resilience and Emotional Intelligence in Leadership Roles Taking on a leadership role is a great responsibility, especially when considering the tight deadlines, office politics and constantly high expectations. These expectations, both internal and external, further increase the stress of a highly demanding role, and necessitate the implementation of resilience and emotional intelligence. Without harnessing strategies and techniques to keep their emotions in check and maintain a cool and balanced approach to work, leaders are less efficient and team productivity decreases. Developing resilience and improving emotional intelligence will enable a leader to work well under pressure, respond proactively to stress triggers, and bounce back when things don’t go to plan. Judy runs her own business, Achieve Real Change, as well as working as a Leadership Coach at both Coach in a Box and Leadership WA. She enjoys the diversity of working with individuals in corporate, government, non-government and community sectors at middle, senior management and executive levels. Organizations include Mars, Mondelez, Toll, Energy Australia, Medibank Private, BankWest, and State Edn Depts (WA, Vic, NSW SA). In June 2013 Judy received her accreditation as an Empowerment Life Coach in the US to further develop her skills in transformative growth methodology. Her area of expertise lies in inspiring a person, or a group of people to take the risk to go for their deepest dream, to confront and transform the limiting beliefs that may surface, and cultivate the courage to bring their vision to fruition. Prior to relocating to Perth Judy was based in the Kimberley region of Western Australia for 16 years where she held positions in management, consultancy, counselling and education. This enabled her to develop an intricate knowledge of cultural awareness and practical applications to both people growth and strategic project development, as well as leading innovative solutions to community social issues. In 2009 her leadership enabled the development and implementation of a model designed to assist with the “closing the gap” agenda for Indigenous Australians which won the prestigious Ben Drayton Award for Initiatives in Aboriginal Education, WA. Judy uses her key understandings in personal development, psychology and the basic human need for connectedness, as a catalyst for behavioural change. Her vision for others is based on the belief that too often when taking that next step we focus on what needs to get done, without looking at who we need to become, in order to really make it.
