This document summarizes information about 5 endangered species in India and the government's conservation efforts. It discusses the Indian elephant, Bengal tiger, snow leopard, red panda, and lion-tailed macaque. For each species, it provides details on population numbers and threats. It also outlines some of the key government programs established to protect habitats and address threats like poaching, illegal hunting, and human-wildlife conflict. The goal of these programs is to help revive declining populations and ensure long-term survival of these endangered species in India.

5. Lion Tailed Macaque
3. Indian Elephant
ABOUT
These are the Elephants found in
India and are nearly Extinct only
20,000 to 25,000 of them are
Remaining in the World.
Since there Habitat is being
destroyed they sometimes destroy
farmer’s crops which leads to
retaliation by humans because of
which the are being hunted and
killed
GOVERNMENT EFFORTS

5. Bengal Tiger
ABOUT
The Bengal tiger is primarily found
in India and are only 2,500
remaining, though they have been
spotted in other east Asia countries,
such as Nepal and China. They are
solitary creatures who scent mark
their territory.
Bengal tigers are also the only tiger
species that have been reported to
have all white coloration.
GOVERNMENT EFFORTS
Project Tiger is a tiger conservation
programme launched in April 1973 by the
Government of India during Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. The
project aims at ensuring a viable
population of Bengal tigers in their
natural habitats, protecting them from
extinction, and preserving areas of
biological importance as a natural
heritage forever represented as close as
possible the diversity of ecosystems
across the tiger's distribution in the
country. The project's task force
visualized these tiger reserves as
breeding nuclei, from which surplus
animals would migrate to adjacent
forests

7. Snow Leopard
Government’s efforts
In an effort to revive the species
population a special conservation
program is being drafted that will help
save the species and their habitat
Snow leopard also known as the
ounce is a large cat native to the
mountain ranges of Central and
South Asia . It is listed as
vulnerable on the IUCN red
list,snow leopard’s global
population is estimated to be less
than 10,000 mature individuals,
and in India only from 200-600
individuals. Snow leopards are
also called the ghost of the
mountains going to

9. Red Panda
About
Red panda is also known as ailurus fulgens
The red panda is a mammal native to the
eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.
It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red
List because the wild population is estimated
at fewer than 10,000 mature individuals and
continues to decline due to habitat loss and
fragmentation, poaching, and inbreeding
depression
India identified habitat destruction due to
excessive extraction of wood for fuel as
the biggest threat to the Red Panda
government efforts
Reduce habitat degradation by planting
bamboo, requiring tourist permits, restricting
entry during the breeding season, reducing
livestock that trampled undergrowth, and
improving fire protection. Reduce deaths by
strengthening and enforcing hunting and
poaching laws Government Efforts

11. Lion - Tailed Macaque Government effort
About
The lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus), or
the wanderoo, is an Old World monkey
endemic to the Western Ghats of South
India. The hair of the Lion-tailed macaque is
dark- brown or black. There is a black tuft at
the end of the tail, similar to a lion's tail.
To save and restore the northernmost
habitat of the lion-tailed macaque, they
proposed that the forests where they live be
declared a wildlife sanctuary or conservation
reserve, using them as an umbrella species
for conservation. Did you delete snow
