Content liberation refers to when cultural institutions digitize works in their collections, publish them online under free licenses, and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Some museums fear misuse of images if they release high-resolution digital copies, but collaborations between Wikimedia and cultural organizations called GLAM-WIKI encourage sharing content.

This document discusses Bristol & Wikipedia and Wikimedia UK's efforts to promote collaboration between cultural institutions and Wikipedia. Some key points:
- Wikimedia UK is the UK chapter of Wikimedia volunteers that promotes free content and seeks volunteers.
- Several projects have involved sharing content from cultural institutions on Wikipedia, such as images from museums being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
- QR codes have been used at some institutions to provide mobile access to additional information about museum exhibits from Wikipedia pages.
- Challenges have been conducted, such as the Wright Challenge where over 600 pages were created about Derby Museum in under 6 weeks.
- Outreach to local communities in Bristol is aimed at getting more local content contributed

Wikimania Esino Lario at Wikimedia CH general assemblyIolanda Pensa
Wikimania is the annual conference of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. Wikimania 2016 will be held in Esino Lario, Italy from June 21-28. Esino Lario is a small mountain village that will host the entire conference, aiming to bring the community closely together through interaction and legacy projects. Organizing Wikimania in a rural village is a new challenge that involves housing attendees in nearby towns and providing transportation. The goals are to test a collaborative format for up to 1,000 participants and develop a sustainable model with long-term benefits to the region.

The TEDx talk on 8th September at Bristol M Shed. Daringly we spoke about the M Shed's on-line presense. They have spent millions transforming the museum from its former name of the Bristol Industrial Museum. Sadly on Wikipedia their former reincarnation looks like a better museum that they are now. How can you transform a museum? Why would you want to? Is it possible to change the on-line profile of your museum. We talk here about the work that Wikimedia UK have done with Derby Museum. As a result they have 1200 articles on their museum and are probable seen as one the UKs top museums on many wikipedias.
The Alamillo Bridge in Seville, Spain was built in 1992 for the Expo in Seville. It is supported by 26 tensioned steel cables from a single pier tower, making it unique as other bridges require back tie cables for support. The bridge was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava and took 5 years to complete, spanning 200 meters with a total length of 250 meters and height of 140 meters.

This document summarizes how Wikimedia UK partnered with Derby Museum to transform its online presence using Wikipedia and QR codes. Volunteers wrote over 1,200 articles about the museum's exhibits in many languages. QR codes linked to these articles, allowing visitors to learn more in their own language on their phones. This global collaboration increased attention on the museum and city of Derby online, filling information gaps and putting the small regional museum on a global stage. The success suggests that cultural institutions can use free online tools and volunteer contributions to strengthen their online image and raise awareness of their city worldwide.

Wikimania is the annual conference for the Wikipedia community. The village of Esino Lario in Italy is bidding to host Wikimania 2016. The research presented evaluates using Wikipedia as an educational resource for primary schools and involves assessing articles, translating content into different languages, and collaborating with educators. Iolanda Pensa is a Wikimedia volunteer and researcher who is promoting Esino Lario's bid to host Wikimania 2016.
Iolanda Pensa discusses the important role scholars can play in contributing to Wikipedia. Scholars can directly edit and improve Wikipedia articles related to their expertise, especially regarding content about Africa which is currently limited. They can also indirectly contribute by encouraging students to write and translate articles, working with academic journals to publish Wikipedia-related content, and sharing content under open licenses. Pensa draws on her experience with projects like WikiAfrica and Wikipedia Primary School that aim to increase and improve African content on Wikipedia. Scholars' contributions are valuable for making specialized knowledge more accessible and supporting further research.
ICOM Moscow 2014 with audio - The Virtual MuseumSusan Hazan
The document discusses the definition and qualities of a virtual museum. It summarizes initial work by the V-Must network to rethink the concept of virtual museums in light of emerging digital technologies. The network has identified and mapped tools and services that define and support virtual museums in the heritage sector. A virtual museum is defined as a digital entity that draws on characteristics of a physical museum to complement, enhance, or augment the museum experience through personalization, interactivity and rich content. Virtual museums can act as the digital presence of a physical museum or independently while maintaining the authoritative status of museums as defined by ICOM.

Improving the structure and searchability of immovable cultural heritage information from around the world is what the Connected Open Heritage project has been trying to achieve. We have worked to include contextualized information on Wikipedia; new and historical images on Wikimedia Commons; and structured data on Wikidata.
During the presentation we will talk about some of the challenges and lessons gathered while working with processing a world-unique collection of datasets from 50 countries, working to release new datasets, finding ways to keep it up-to-date, and creating the methodologies for the data to be added to Wikidata in a standardized and structured form.
John Cummings is the Wikimedian in Residence for the Science Museum and Natural History Museum. His role is to educate people about Wikimedia projects, teach people how to contribute, help improve articles related to the museums, and find ways for the museum to use open knowledge projects. Wikipedia is a free, web-based encyclopedia that anyone can edit and is written collaboratively under Creative Commons licensing. It has over 16 million freely usable media files and serves around 500 million people per month. The Wikimedia Foundation oversees various Wikimedia projects including Wikipedia.
The document discusses the partnership between The Children's Museum of Indianapolis and Wikimedia to improve Wikipedia articles related to the museum. It provides examples of other museums that have participated in Wikipedian in Residence programs, including the British Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and National Archives. It outlines the benefits of collaborating with Wikipedia, such as reaching wider audiences, engaging volunteers, and improving online information. Strategies discussed include hosting edit-a-thons, backstage tours, student programs, multilingual projects using QR codes, and connecting with educators. Next steps mentioned are supporting the GLAM-Wiki community and diversifying engagement.

Cultural heritage embraces resources inherited from the past and offers a great variety of opportunities to the present: monuments, sites and traditions, but also visual arts, cinema, TV and radio archives.
In this framework, the Media of the Euro-Mediterranean region – both traditional and new ones – have to play their role, particularly given the challenges that such issue implies in terms of content production, audiovisual documents preservation and impact of the digital transition as a tool for the safeguard and enhancement of our common heritage.
