Diabetes is affecting 30 million Americans
The purpose of this article is to provide a simple
explanation that can lead to an understanding of the
importance of the right type of diet in the life of anyone
who becomes a diabetic. Unfortunately, the damage that
can be done by eating the wrong foods takes a long to
show up but when it does the consequences can be dire,
as noted in the following brief summary described in the
official 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet.
The 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet statistics published
by the American Diabetes Association tell the sad story, it
lists the complications of diabetes as being the leading
cause in the United States of heart disease and
stroke, high blood pressure, nervous system
diseases, blindness, kidney disease, and amputation of
limbs. The details are available for all to see by searching
for "ADA statistics on diabetes" on Google.
A primary pillar in the treatment of diabetes is the
adoption of a suitable diet and a diabetic menu that limits
carbohydrates, the main source of sugar that, while being
essential for good health, can cause health problems when
consumed in excessive amounts. The process in which the
body deals with glucose is described below.
Some carbohydrates cause more problems than others,
especially those that cater to our "sweet-tooth", the cakes
and pastries and other sugary deserts and beverages,
think how much sugar there is in any popular so-called
                    soft drink, or pop.
The objective of a diabetic menu is to deliver adequate
nutritious food and sufficient calories to reach and
maintain a healthy body weight without providing more
glucose than can be tolerated. If this can be
achieved, control of blood sugar levels to within a
relatively safe range is possible, although there is no
actual cure for diabetes. That's correct, there is no cure for
                          diabetes.
The diabetic menu is the key to successful management of
diabetes, although other important aspects of diabetes
treatment include physical activity, preferably daily
exercise of any form equal to about 30 minutes of walking
every day, and in many instances, the use of prescription
                          drugs.
In practical terms, because of age or disabilities, not
everyone is able to exercise, which means that it is even
more important to adopt and adhere to a diabetic menu
that is able to keep blood sugars in check, even though it is
difficult to break the well established eating habits that
brought on the diabetic condition in the first place.
The body and glucoseDiabetes is a serious disease
associated with higher than normal levels of glucose that
occur in the blood of the person who has the disease.
Glucose is a form of sugar that is obtained by the body
from the foods eaten each day in the normal course of
living and glucose is an essential source of fuel that the
cells of the body convert to energy during their numerous
and unceasing metabolic activities. It is a fact that glucose
is needed to keep us alive.
To provide a simplified explanation of some complex
events occurring in the body, it can be said that normally,
after food is eaten and digested, the glucose content is
passed via the intestines into the bloodstream that
delivers the glucose to various tissues and organs
throughout the body. Then, with the aid of the hormone
insulin, produced in the pancreas, the body processes the
glucose to enable it to be absorbed into the body's cells. If
there is more glucose than is required by the cells, the
extra is converted and stored as fat.
The problem of diabetesIt comes down therefore, to what
we eat and how well our body functions. Unfortunately, in
the case of a person with diabetes, their system to process
the glucose becomes impaired with the result that higher
levels of glucose remain in their bloodstream.
When a doctor has diagnosed that a patient is
diabetic, meaning that it is confirmed that the patient has
the disease called diabetes, it is customary for the doctor
to provide advice on dietary matters and may possibly
provide access to a dietician who can tailor a dietary
regimen to meet the requirements and tastes of the newly
                    diagnosed diabetic.
This would list the types of foods that are appropriate to
include in their diabetic menu and also list the foods to
avoid, where possible. In general, there are few foods that
are considered as being "off-limits" to a diabetic, however,
portion sizes of some sugary food items must be limited to
prevent blood sugar becoming too elevated.
