- The city of Pompeii, Italy was buried and destroyed in 79AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, killing over 3,000 people.
- Mount Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and could erupt again. While $30,560 was offered to residents to evacuate, which would take around 2 weeks, some people still choose to live there.
- Living near a volcano can have both blessings and curses - the fertile soil provides good farming and wine production, but an eruption could destroy property and lives. Some reasons people live near volcanoes include fertile land, tourism, and cultural/family ties to the area.
