Why Is Monty Python So Popular
Most comedy fans today can't see a can of spam, a dead parrot, or hear the sound of clanging coconuts without immediately thinking of Monty Python.
The British comedy group, Monty Python, was formed in the late 1960s, and would have a lasting impact on both television and film that would
influences comedians and entertainers for years and years to come. The troupe consisted of six men: Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, John
Cleese, Terry Jones, andTerry Gilliam who were actors, screenwriters, directors, and illustrators. Monty Python quickly gained attention and success
through their sketch comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus which aired in 1965 on BBC. The Python phenomenon developed from the television
series into something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carry On offered a coarse form of humor and starred actors Charles Hawtry, Joan Sims, Kenneth Williams, Sid James, and Hattie Jacques. These men
tackled revered British institutions in a satiric and slapstick fashion–the army, the medical profession, classical history, patriotism, leisure life, and
sports (Landy). The Carry On series also spoofed genre forms of empire films, medical melodramas, and historical films. The Carry On films had
many similarities to Flying Circus including, the looseness of narrative structure, strings of unrelated and physically pointed gags, a focus on
institutions and a bawdy emphasis on gender and class stereotypes, "a consistent refusal of the realism of character acting," and the "insertion of
already familiar, usually crude jokes ()." Both the Carry On films and Monty Python discussed social institutions in a mocking fashion. Monty Python
often relied on direct address to the audience, often calling attention to the silliness of the actions performed and to the artificialness of the medium
which is something that is directly correlated to the Carry On

Gender Roles In Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, tells the story of King Arthur and he and his knight's quest for the
Holy Grail. The writing and directing of the movie shows the problems of society. Monty Python and the Holy Grail uses satirical techniques to
expose gender roles and greed at the expense of others. "The Black knight" exposes how often now and in history gender roles affect society. While it
can be displayed in multiple places in the movie, it is most evident here. The scene shows King Arthur encounter a knight keen on fighting. But when
king arthur begins chopping off the knights limbs, he is not hurt at all it seems. He responds simply " 'Tis but a flesh wound". When Arthur chops off
all of the knights limbs of the knight and he is left just a head... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It shows a mortician collecting dead bodies in a cart and repeatedly yelling "Bring out your dead". In the background several people roll around in
the dirt. It then features a customer carrying an alive man and claiming that he is, or will soon be, dead. The customer pays the mortician nine
pence and the mortician, eager to be done with the matter, kills the man claiming to be alive and puts him in the cart. This, and the dirty costumes
everyone is wearing, is an exaggeration of the poverty of the lower classes. One man killed another for money, and everyone is wearing extremely
dirty outfits as well as rolling around in the mud. In addition to exaggeration, parody of a trash truck is utilized in this scene. Before the sick man gets
killed, the customer asks "Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.". The mortician answers "Naaah, I got to go on to
Robinson's –– they've lost nine today." The customer then asks "Well, when is your next round?". "Thursday." responds the mortician. This dialogue is
a parody with certain round days and specific

Writing the Rules in the Film, Brazil Essay
Terry Gilliam's dystopian film, Brazil (1985), lays out a visually stunning and ultimately sinister depiction of a future society hounded by an oppressive
government's desire for absolute control over the population. Of elementary focus in the film are the roles of technology and the subsequent
dehumanization of the modern world and the myth of the "free man" under a totalitarian regime. Gilliam shows our current obsession with technology
and information as an exasperating evolution of modernity that is, ultimately, leading us nowhere. Repeatedly, we see the shortcomings of a society
that is overly reliant upon systematic response (as displayed by the constant demands for paperwork) and completely lacking in individualism and
expression ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next absurd bit of modernity is the innumerable documents that must be signed, stamped, printed, and filed for anything to be accomplished. For
example, the 27B–6 forms required for the men from central service to "turn on a kitchen tap." Beyond being a nuisance, the paperwork becomes a
sort of malevolent symbol for the totalitarian regime. In the case of the wrongfully arrested Mr. Buttle, the amount of receipts and complaint forms that
need to be filed, stamped, and signed to complete an inquiry take so long that the Ministry of Information (M.O.I.) tortures and kills him before the
wrongdoing can be uncovered. This example of over reliance on the system shows that the primary malevolent force in the film is not necessarily
humans but the procedures and institutions they've created. The people actually responsible for the 'wrongdoing,' such as interrogator Jack Lint, are
simply 'doing their jobs' and thus somewhat exempt from any wickedness. Further illustrating the villainous nature of the paperwork is Lowry's final
vision of Tuttle being covered by a mass of flying documents and ultimately being consumed by them. A final example of contradictory technology is
the constant cosmetic surgery undergone by Sam's mother and her friend, Mrs. Terrain. While it restores some superficial beauty to Mrs. Lowry, Mrs.
Terrain is constantly undergoing procedures to no avail. With each successive

Exploring How Genre and Narrative Features Create Meaning and Generate Audience Response in Twelve Monkeys
'Twelve Monkeys' was directed by Terry Gilliam and released in 1995. Gilliam has written and directed many films including 'Jabberwocky' and the
hit 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', which starred many major actors, including Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro and Tobey Maguire. 'Fear and
Loathing' follows a journalist and his lawyer as they embark on a drug–fuelled search for the "American dream".
This film is similar to 'Twelve Monkeys' in that both are removed from reality and infer a strong sense of surrealism through the way they are
presented. In 'Twelve Monkeys' this is done to embed a sense ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What connection does the couple have to the young boy? Will the young boy be the protagonist of the film or is his appearance irrelevant? Gilliam
incorporates this purposeful mystery to give us our first taste of the thriller element to the film.
During the final shot of the boy's face we begin to hear a woman calling out names, this voice does not seem to belong in the current scene, and it
doesn't. The camera cuts to the face of a rugged, sleeping man. We have changed time and place suddenly which immediately serves to confuse the
audience. "Cole, James" is the next name that the female voice shouts and the man awakes suddenly. He appears to be lying in some kind of metal
cage on a hammock–style bed. Turning to the cage next to him, his friend tells him that they were naming volunteers "and called your name". This
sentence confirms that the first man we saw is James Cole. He sighs, rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of his bed. The friends continue to talk.
Cole speaks of how none of the volunteers ever come back. The camera shows us a high angle shot of hundreds of other cages like Cole's. One
man is being lifted out of his cage by a large hook and we guess that he is one of the 'volunteers'. The place is dark and we suspect it is underground,
as the only light in the place is artificial. It is clear that this world is not the world that

Trajectories In Early Childhood Education
In early childhood education, many young children with challenging behaviors are suspended or expelled from school, because of their difficult to
manage behaviors (Gilliam, 2005). Children who experience these harsh early disciplinary actions in school often continue to present problematic
behaviors in school, which can have long–term negative impacts on their educational trajectories (Hemmeter, Santos, & Ostrosky, 2008). According to
the U.S. Department of Education (2015), young children who are suspended or expelled from school are almost 10 times more likely to not complete
high school, to experience academic failure, and to hold negative attitudes about school. Challenging behaviors are defined as actions that cause injury

Snowpiercer: The Wilford Train
In the movie, Snowpiercer, the world has ended in the result of an environmental catastrophe with the intentions to "reconstruct" the world and it
planet was left covered in snow. The only people who are alive are aboard the Wilford Train that circles the earth once each year. Children play a
large role in the movie with an effort to expose two different perspectives children are viewed as. For instance, the first type of child was privileged
and educated on the history of the Wilford Trains because they were birthed by parents who lived in the front end of the train and were considered as
the upper–class citizen. These children were responsible for being educated every day on the history of the Wilford Train. These children were

Curtis can be identified as a hero from the character traits he reveals through the movie, which are courageous, leadership and compassion. First,
the act of courage happened when Curtis has noticed that the armed men on the tail of the train did not have bullets in their guns. So, Curtis
attacks the armed men by killing them and placing a barrel in the doorway to gain access towards the front of the train. No one in the tail of the
train believed that it was possible to overturn the armed men because of the fear of being killed by them with their weapons. Secondly, the
leadership skills that Curtis has gained throughout his journey towards the front of the train becomes visible. For instance, Gilliam was killed by
Wilford's men because Curtis was supposed to replace Wilford as we find out at the end of the movie. After Gilliam's death, Curtis has demonstrated
leadership skills as he is forced to take over the mission and has the pressures of all the people in the tail rooting for him. Lastly, Curtis showed
compassion towards each person living in the tail of the train because he wanted to figure out what was happening on this train and find their children.
The children are the center focus of their journey because they were taken away from their families without a trace or explanation. As their leader,
Curtis felt as though it was his duty to travel along the train in hopes to find their children and receive

Who Is Lost In La Mancha
Lost in La Mancha is a 2002 documentary about Terry Gilliam's unfinished film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote which broke down as the result
of a variety of issues seen in the various stages of production. Issues include a lack of money to produce the film, illness, weather problems, issues
with poorly trained horses, poor organisation for the location of the film and the absence of an adequate amount of rehearsal beforehand. Before any
production took place, before even pre–production begun one of Terry Gilliam's financers pulled out of the project, so his initial 40 million dollar
budget turned into 32. One of his actors was diagnosed with a prostate infection just minutes before taking the flight to the film set, and the other actors

He's tried many times before to create the film, he has a very unique vision and eccentric imagination. This is why he was forced to film in Europe;
America didn't want to spend so much money on a film as out there as it was too much of a risk. The main mistake Terry Gilliam made was
continuing to film after one of his financers pulled out, taking 8 million dollars out of the previous 40 million dollar budget they had. He should
have tried to find another financer and just delay the production of the film. But even with such a financial setback he failed to dial down any of his
scenes, he explained that he wanted every shot to be "difficult", this isn't too bad and such a mindset may result in some amazing shots but it's not a
mindset that should still be in play when you lose 8 million dollars of a budget to create a film. His First Assistant director Phil Patterson role was to
mainly just organise everything and make sure everything was matching the plan. He was also involved in making sure the project is meeting the set
due dates, in the documentary he is also seen trying to hold everything together when things go

Reflection Paper On Negotiation
Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach a beneficial outcome over one or more issues where a conflict
exists with respect to at least one of these issues. This beneficial outcome can be for all of the parties involved, or just for one or some of them.
Now–a–days openly dominating a negotiation has pretty much gone by the wayside. An emphasis on listening and building a helpful atmosphere is a
more accepted negotiating style for both women and men. When I was studying my tenth standard, in my schooldays one of my teacher, her name is

department and the panel's moderator, noted that listening is essential to successful negotiations even though it can seem like a weak position.
"Sometimes we feel like whoever is dominating the airwaves is controlling the negotiation and the space." Closely related to listening, openness and
collaboration is building long–term relationships, according to some of the speakers. Pereira said that in her industry, one tends to work with the
same advisors again and again, and someone on the other side of a negotiation could easily turn up on the same side of the table later on. "we don't
always know when someone's going to pop back into our life. It really is so important to negotiate with integrity and build personal relationships as we
go." "Long–term relationships are very important in my industry, too, very similar to Jen's," said Potenta. "We're

Social Injustice In Kettle Bottom
Social Injustice Explored in Kettle Bottom
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the United States moved from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy based on textile factories,
steel mills, and new inventions. The mechanization of America required an energy source, and that energy source wascoal. Diane Gilliam Fisher, a
sixty–one–year–old American poet, uses her poems in Kettle Bottom to tell the world about the mining community. Kettle Bottom by Diane Fisher
explores the history of West Virginia coal miners' struggle against mine owners as the miners fight for better working conditions and pay, the emotional
strain on the miners and their families, and the dangerous working conditions faced by the miners; in order to inform ... Show more content on

According to information from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in the early 1900s mine explosions and other accidents claimed thousands
of victims. "The deadliest year in United States coal mining history was 1907, when an estimated 3,242 deaths occurred" (Injury Trends in Mining).
While many miners died in mine accidents, "For each laborer killed directly, several were maimed, and several more found their lives shortened
by coal dust, lead, and other poisons" (Andrews). When a miner was unable to perform his job even if this was due to work related issues, he got
replaced. The disabled miner was given no compensation, no resources to provide for his family, and no medical care; he was simply tossed aside
by company officials. The chance of an explosion or the collapse of a tunnel roof due to unsafe working conditions and machinery was so great that
mothers, wives, and daughters had to memorize physical attributes or tangible aspects of clothing in case they needed to identify the body of a loved
one. Fisher acknowledges this haunting reality in "Explosion at Winco No. 9" when she writes that it is "Us that learns by heart birthmarks, scars,
bends of fingers, how the teeth set crooked or straight" (L10–12). One can feel the anguish of grieving relatives in the final stanza of

The Legend Of King Arthur And Le Morte DArthur
Has a book or movie given enjoyment through a hard time? Thomas Malory and Terry Gilliam have opposing writing styles as a result of the
context they wrote their texts in. Thomas Malory, author of Le Morte d'Arthur, writes his book as a compilation of tales and Terry Gilliam writes
his version as a script for a movie. While both Gilliam and Malory use an episodic narrative, Gilliam writes his movie as a parody to mock old
England and other versions of the Legend of King Arthur, and Malory uses his book as a story that includes immense details about a legend. While Le
Morte d'Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grail both share a common plot, the works differ on intended purpose and tone. The audiences each
author tries to appease changes each author's writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who is traumatized by
numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of atrocious kings, while Terry Gilliam is trying to entertain a more modern audience that wants a
humorous and satirical movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors, differ in that each are delivering their works to a situationally different
audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d'Arthur was written, people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a
history of tyrannical kings. Even so, one of the worst Kings of England ever was King Richard III who was reigning just as the book was written.

The infamous British film known as Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975 directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, was considered a cult classic
among the comedy genre. But what made it so significant among other films during that era, and why is does it still stand the test of time? Classical
films were originally considered more than just another form of entertainment. This form of media allowed artist to visually express their personal
views through the big screen. Some film makers tend to lean more on either the avant–garde or political side of cinema to tell their story. Being able to
utilize film techniques in the most sophisticated ways to tell a narrative is a challenge, but aesthetics are cognitively powerful within this art form....

It is a reaction to the concept of modernism; a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart significantly from classical and traditional forms in the
early 20th century. Postmodern lacks a precise definition, but share many aspects of modernism. They are fueled by post–industrialization, and driven
by late capitalism. However, there are a few distinctions that make it quite deliberate from its predecessor. According to Fredric Jameson 's theory, the
experience of an art is mediated by technology and/or capitalism so we no longer experience things as natural (Jameson 64)." In other words there are
effects that create this erosion of high culture and low culture. In addition of devaluing historical contexts, while lacking an ideology because the focus

refusal to think historically, and disdain for the thought of underlying reality as actuality. Overall postmodernism is broad, but very retrospective in
terms of content, form and style within cinema. It is all about recycling materials in order to reproduce for the interest of the individual being rather
than a singularity subject. On the other hand, Monty Python and the Holy Grail style and form are what separate itself from the masses of classical

Charles McKeown, and himself. The movie was filmed in Wembley, England by Lee International FilmStudios. After being a remarkable success

This use of technology is just one of the issues being addressed in the movie. There is an abundance of appliances, gadgets and devices that are created
with the idea that they are meant to make the world easier, simpler and more fun to live in. But the majority of these devices fail to serve their purpose
making things more cluttered and cumbersome. This includes elevators that don't work, automated coffee machines that pour the coffee in the
incorrect place, alarm clocks that get 'stuck', miniature sized computers with magnifying glasses for viewing, and most importantly to the main
character, Sam Lowry, heating ducts that don't work.
Apartments in the world of Brazil are equipped with centralized climate control ducts in the walls. The walls themselves are made out of panels to
access all the tubing going through the walls in all directions. To the misfortune of Sam Lowry, his heating ducts go incredibly array. When he calls to
have them fixed by the proper authorities, he is disappointed to find service unavailable and then later, inefficient. Following misfortunes due to this
breakdown lead to Sam Lowry's eventual demise.
Brazil depicts how technology is not always a positive thing. Even products and systems that are designed specifically for our benefit can become more
tedious than useful. Technology is not equivalent to progress, though much of the twentieth century has set that example. Industrialization as a whole is

Character Analysis Of Mr. Incredible
However, Mr. Frederickson ignores Russell to continue on trying to navigate it without him. The purpose behind that is to show some sense of
strength, as an old man he won't exhibit super strength or any sort of power like Mr. Incredible, but instead he exhibits the old saying that with age
comes wisdom; within that scene that is exactly what "strength" he is showing. Mr. Frederickson wants to show that he is strong and capable
enough to get there without help. However, as the movie progresses his vulnerability becomes more visible. The want to show strength and to appear
strong comes from the emasculation of the characters. Mr. Incredible was this well known superhero that went around saving the city from robbers,
criminals, and other events. However the city soon retired him for the amount of damage he caused, leading to him having to obtain a real job and
provide for a family. His series of events are Mr. Incredible's emasculation. On the other hand is Mr. Frederickson, he however was never a superhero
or anything of extravagance. Instead, he was the man in charge of the balloon cart at a zoo. While he wasn't very exciting in the first place, he had
had dreams of being able to retire with his wife at Paradise Falls. Mr. Frederickson's retirement with his wife never happens sadly. In fact he wasn't
truly ever able to retire. The failure to achieve his dream of retirement at Paradise Falls is the emasculation of Mr. Frederickson. The failure

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones (1975), is a clever film that uses a variety of techniques to satirise King
Arthur and his Knights of the Round table. Three techniques the film uses are breaking the dramatic illusion, 2–D animation and anachronisms. This is
what puts them apart from other films in their time. First I'm going to talk about breaking the dramatic illusion.
Many times in the film Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones use a technique called breaking the dramatic illusion. It is a technique when the filmmaker
mentally pokes you in the ribs to give you a reminder that you really are watching a movie while other films do the opposite and try to pull you into
the story.
My first example is the scene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ARTHUR: There it is! The Bridge of Death! ROBIN: Oh, great. KNIGHT: Look! ARTHUR: There's the old man from Scene 24! BEDEMIR: What is
he doing here?
With this technique the filmmakers can belittle the famous story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by making this story look trivial.
They also use this technique as a tool to put more jokes into the film.
Now I'm going to talk about anachronisms. An anachronism is when two or more things come from different time periods, like a power tool in a story
set in the middle of the 14th century.
My first example of an anachronism is when the french soldiers in the castle talk about the airspeed velocity of a european and african swallow. This
is clearly modern science not 932 AD science.
GUARD #1: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a 1 pound coconut.
ARTHUR: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here. GUARD #1: Listen, in order to
maintain air–speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings 43 times every second,

Postmodernism, By Jean Francois Lyotard
Postmodernism itself means, "after present times," but how can we be in an age of something past the present? It is a way of thinking that's easy to
identify but rather hard to define, though world renowned french philosopher Jean–Francois Lyotard tried to in his research as, "Simplifying to the
extreme, I define postmodernism as incredulity toward metanarratives." The beauty of postmodernism is the subtle, the things you might not catch the
first few viewings, and often appear to pay homage to some older tale, but actually mock it. Postmodernism seeks to challenge what we've held as
truth through tradition and force people to use their brains for themselves. In this work, Gilliam worked to actively create layers of this movie using a...

This first layer of The Hero's Journey is the fact that this text is presented almost as a remastering but parodies the entire plot, and still follows the
same style of story of the Holy Grail. In a sense, this text seeks to prove how all the epics are the same by doing the absurd while following the exact
same pattern as them all, questioning the very patterns as a whole first. As detailed in the First Chapter of The hero with a thousand faces, all these
champions receive supernatural help, and guidance. Making fun of nearly all the useless mentors, Tim basically points the group to their death

and evil comes in all shapes and sizes. The most convenient thing in any epic tale is the travel, whether it be wings or just time jumps for the sake of
storytelling, there's no room for wasting time. After the group assembles they immediately split up to cover better ground each going off to face their

I think the film is trying to remind us of how we should be aware of the things that might have a devastating effect on our living environment, such as
the Ebola virus and global warming. These things might not appear to be a huge problem now, but it will eventually become a big issue in our living
environment. This is shown in the film that in 1996 a deadly virus has wiped out almost all of humanity, and all the survivors have to live

William Blake rhymed the words "deep" and "weep" in line seven to emphasise and link the feeling of loneliness the little boy had. Similarly,
Seamus Heaney used "The squat pen rests; snug as a gun", using the reverse spelling of snug (with dropping the's') to write 'gun' in the same line to
emphasise the image of his pen being a weapon. "The squat pen rests; snug as a gun" also shows great contrast with 'snug' being a comfortable and
secure word while 'gun' is a word that conjures up images of violence and war. This type of negative, contrasted, imagery is used throughout
'Tichborne's Elegy' to emphasise loss. Charles Tichborne uses images such as "my crop of corn is but a field of tares" which expresses that anything
worthy of praise he once had, is now worth nothing at all. Conceivably the poem the expresses the most sadness, 'Tichborne's Elegy' uses strong
imagery that creates the air of grief surrounding the poem. An example of this powerful imagery is the haunting refrain which is repeated throughout
the poem at the end of each stanza, "And now I live, and now my life is done". At the time Charles Tichborne wrote this poem, he knew he was going

What Is The Importance Of Cultural Competency
Reaching out to HIV positive black women and providing them with salient care can seem like a daunting task. It's all well and good to have the desire

According to Scott, Gilliam, and Braxton, the idea of "culturally competent" or culturally relevant HIV intervention and prevention programs is a
worthwhile starting post (2005). Cultural competence means understanding and empathizing with the unique cultural ideals that are important to a
community and understanding how culture influences decision–making as well as everyday life (Scott, Gilliam, & Braxton, 2005). Essentially, the

Comparison Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, expertly parodies historical events throughout the Middle Ages. It was able to do this by adding a humorous touch
to these events. Though with this they were only imitation and there were times in which the facts were misconstrued about the general knowledge
during this time period. The examples the best demonstrate the differences and similarities include the time period of the Bubonic plague, the
determining of a witch, and the interactions between Sir Robin and his troubadour. The first example that compared the general of knowledge of the

During the middle ages there were many witch hunts, and many people were quick to oust someone as a witch and in turn would try rid them of the
world. In the middle Ages method they used to determine if someone was a witch was they would tie up their hands and legs, and place them in water.
They would do this believing that witches float in water, this was a lose–lose situation for the person being accused, if they didn't float they would
drown, but if they did they would be taken and then burned alive. The movie makes their own interpretation of this fact, comparing witches to logs
floating in water, which led them to come to the idea that ducks also float on water. So in the movie they weighed her against a duck, since the balance

Up Until Recently, Hoarding Has Been Classified As A Subtype
Up until recently, hoarding has been classified as a subtype of obsessive compulsive disorder. However, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (DSM–5 )has now included a separate diagnostic entry for hoarding. Hoarding Disorder affects anywhere from 3–6% of the general
population (Allan, et. al. 2015). Hoarding is defined as "the acquisition and inability to let go of a large number of possessions, resulting in clutter
that precludes the use of living spaces for their intended purposes" (Chong, et. al. 2014). In addition to being associated with obsessive compulsive
disorder, hoarding disorder has been linked to all three dimensions of depression (Allan, et. al. 2015). This disorder has been shown to have a large

Furthermore, these individuals may hold a significant sentimental attachment to numerous objects. This often leads to clutter and disorganization
within the hoarders' household. Hoarding is further broken down by four major elements. These key elements are as follows: excessive acquiring,
failure to discard possessions, clutter, and distress and impairment due to hoarding (Gillam, Tolin, 2010). Hoarders acquire their possessions in a
multitude of ways. These ways include compulsive buying, attainment of free objects, and in severe cases, stealing. Individuals oftentimes spend hours
looking for objects to bring back home. Those who hoard describe the procurement of objects as very exciting and even report feeling frugal because of
their finds. Certain hoarding individuals also find enjoyment out of hunting for new objects to bring back home. In addition, these same individuals
also report feeling discomfort and agitation when trying to refrain from buying objects. Those with hoarding disorder feel that the attainment of objects
brings them positive emotions similar to those one may experience when they have impulse control disorders like gambling. Individuals with hoarding
disorder have difficulties throwing out things that the general population would view as garbage or unusable. Similar to the general population, who
hates being wasteful or throwing away objects that may be useful in the future,

Maternity Leave Case Study
Many of these different employment laws interested me, however, the Family and Medical Leave Act caught my eye. This is because I have a
family member who just recently birthed a child. She received the required amount of 12 weeks of maternity leave, as well as being granted an extra
6 weeks additionally. So this kind of law made sense for me. Now just a little background on this employment law, it was enacted in 1993 by President
Bill Clinton. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 allows employees who have worked for a company for 1 year or more to apply for a period of
unpaid leave with no fear of losing their job. The law can be beneficial to an employee whose family member has become ill, or they are needed to take

employer over the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act takes place in the northern Indiana city of Elkhart, Indiana. This case is officially
referred to as Gilliam vs. United Parcel Service Inc., handed down on November 29th, 2000. The court case document, that notes Gilliam, in full
as Reginald Gilliam, assumed that the Family and Medical Leave Act licensed him to be able to up to 120 days off of work without obtaining any
penalty. Mr. Gilliam also believed that he did not have to advise his current employer of his schedule of return to work. There was apparently a
miscommunication of words between Mr. Gilliam and Mr. Gilliam's supervisor about the amount of time that Mr. Gilliam would be out of the
workplace for. This therefore created confusion and disagreements, leading to a U.S. Circuit Courts decision. All in all, the court confirmed the
official accord of Judge Robert L. Miller. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana and Judge Miller had their rulings upheld,
stating that Mr. Gilliam has the full responsibility to inform the company at least 30 days prior to beginning the requested leave period. Mr. Gilliam
failed to fulfill his legal obligations under the Family and Medical Leave Act and therefore will now reap the repercussions of his failure to abide by the

I Went Go See Is Silly No More By Christian Gilliam
The title of the play I went to go see is Silly No More by Christian Gilliam. The production was held at Bob Duncan Center on the seventh of
October at two o'clock. Silly No More is about a mother who is trying to get her family together for her birthday party. Her family members haven 't
spoken to each other in years and their lives are full of sin, dysfunction, past hurts and pains. Upon a journey to both physical and spiritual in hopes of
restoring her family with the healing power of Jesus Christ. She finally gains her family trust and love. My overall impression of Silly No More that
it had a great plot and that it was well written, but he had a few minor issues. My first thought was that this play seems as if his inspiration came
from his own personal life and that this is his first play. That him and his own family had taken a similar spiritual journey. The theme of Silly No More
is Comedy, Spiritual/Religious, and Drama/Suspense. The comedy was not really emphasized on the play as I had hope, the only thing that was funny
was the Aunt Margaret and her pun lines. Drama/Suspense was implied in a stronger way than the Comedy. For example, when the grandmother found
out that her grandchild was using drugs because of her mother had done it in front of her. Finally, the last theme is Religious/Spiritual, this theme was
throughout this whole play, before and after. They had prayer before and after, a lot of gospel songs and Jesus Christ showed through each scene.

"12 Monkeys" and Society's Perception of Drugs Essay
Illegal Drugs vs. Psych Ward Drugs
The definition of drugs ranges from supposedly positive to automatically classified as negative. But who is to say which drug is bad and which drug
is considered good. In the movie entitled "12 Angry Men" the director Terry Gilliam used this film to bring about an idea that I had to rethink. This
movie was released on the 27 of December in 1995, this movie's genre is often questionable but for the most part it is an Action, Thriller, Sci–Fi. The
two characters that the drugs affected the most were the main character James Cole played by Bruce Willis and another important character Jeffrey
played by Brad Pit. Our society often contradicts themselves when it comes to distributing and using drugs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the scientists on the cast question his trip one of the questions I would like to point out is Cole is asked, "How was it? Lots of drugs?"
The definition of a Drug according to dictionary.com is "A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous
system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction" and "A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a
component of a medication." Being a controlled substance we automatically classify drugs as an illegal act that is not often accepted. In our
society today you can go to jail for "possession" and "possession with intent to supply." Our generation is receiving years in jail or the misuse and
overdose of drugs. Drugs are abused everyday by teens and adults and often looked down upon. Numerous accidents have occurred do to the abuse of
some drugs. Drugs in our society today are initially thought of as bad, and then we come to the understanding that there are other types of drugs that
may in fact not be bad but used for good.
Illegal drugs are portrayed in our society as really bad, but the use of drugs is abused in psych wards and other facilities also. From previous research I
learned that Thorazine is an antipsychotic drug, used as a major tranquilizers. So it is ok for our government and other higher authority to allow the use
of tranquilizers on humans and

Satirical Dystopian Themes in Terry Gilliam's Film Brazil "8:49 p.m..... Somewhere in the 20th Century" (Gilliam). This is how Terry Gilliam's Brazil

While titled Brazil it is not actually set in Brazil as a matter of fact no mention of where the film is set ever occurs during the film. Gilliam purposely

The Human Centipede: Did It Go Too Far?
The Human Centipede Did it go Too Far? "The Human Centipede" is a horror film written, produced, and directed by Tom Six. The film was
originally released in 2009 at film festivals and theatrically on April 28th the following year. Described as "the most horrific film ever made," most
critics agree that the film is horrific but don't share Six's enthusiasm. While the films originality should be noted, many find its concept disturbing
and grotesque. Tom Six has stated that Nazi medical experiments during World War II were an inspiration in writing the film (Masters). The film
raised just slightly over $250,000 worldwide in box office sales, which reflects the mostly negative mainstream critic reviews. Contrary, the film
earned over $2,000,000 in revenue through DVD sales. The film franchise went on to release a sequel in 2011, "The Human Centipede: The Second

A dark, gruesome time lampooned by a British film group. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a rather contrasting panorama on medieval history. The
multiple institutions of the Catholic Church, Chivalry, education, and Feudalism are remarkably satirized. Although, some descriptions are punctilious.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail burlesques the medieval Catholic Church. The first way they do so is by mocking the life of religious people at the
time. This is done when those on the conquest looking for the Holy Grail stumbled upon a convent of the time. The next way is when a woman is
accused of being a witch. This satirizes the church because during the Middle Ages witchcraft was considered Satanism therefore punishable by death

Analysis of Brazil, Directed by Terry Gilliam
As a child develops into an adult there are critical developmental steps that are necessary for a complete and successful transition. The physical
transition is the most obvious change, but underneath the thick skin and amongst the complex systems, exists another layer of transitions. Ideas,
rationales, ideologies and beliefs all dwell within this layer of each being. It could be said that a nation can also fit this transitional framework. A nation
grows in both size (wealth, population, power), and in ideological maturity (emancipation of slaves, civil rights, women's rights...etc). This constant
evolution of ideas and size is the foundation of a successful government. Without change and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film is riddled with disturbing parallels to current governments close to home. In Sam Lowry's peculiar world, he works as an employee of the
Ministry of Information's Department of Records. The Ministry is the umbrella corporation/government that runs everything from utilities and credit
ratings to enforcing the confusing laws that they themselves have created. The working environment is presented to the viewer as efficiency at its
finest. His office shows every person engaged dutifully in their quest for filing the right papers into the right files. Not a paper is discarded on the
floor; every paper is clearly accounted for. The man who is in charge of the operation, Mr. Kurtzmann, is seen standing next to his office door holding
a militant stance, watch in hand, suspiciously supervising his lively mechanism. The whole environment exudes subtle nobility in working for a
greater good. This is quite typical of what would be considered a utopia for government offices. The employees participating in the great American
Dream, chasing the promotion, the bigger house down the block. Yet before long Gilliam shows that the efficiency is purely superficial. Once Mr.
Kurtzmann steps inside of his office the televisions are flicked to life and the whole machine stops. The workers show no difficulty in ignoring their
duties. The truth behind this once seemingly perfect workspace shows itself only moments later, as

Another great example of Gilliam 's use of imagery is the repeated chorus "Swimming in money". ( Owens.) With this line Gilliam to is not only
appealing to the current popular rap culture, which is predominantly made up of songs talking about money and the subsequent use of it, but is also
mocking said culture, himself included. Gilliam almost appears to be at loss for what he should do with this money, as he comments on Which
automatically makes your mind think of a bathtub full of money or cash. But what I really think he 's saying is that he has so much money he doesn 't
know what to do with it, evidenced by the lines "They all take the money for granted. But don 't want to work for it tell me now, isn 't it funny? Nah". (
Owens.) A final great example of imagery is when Gilliam raps about "Having dreams that I'm folding cake", ( Owens.) a scenario that could take
many forms. Although initially many people would hear as a relatively straightforward idea, Gilliam wanting cake, there is a much deeper meaning
behind this line. Gilliam grew up poor, and as shown in the famous (yet misquoted) line by Marie Antoinette, cake is oftentimes seen as a delicacy
afforded to only the rich. This line in particular sets up the main theme of "Me, Myself and I", which is Gallium 's determination to make it on his own.
Gilliam really hits on this theme during the chorus, where he repeats the line "Solo ride until I die, cause I got me for life" ( Owens.) , hitting home

Comparison Of Le Morte DPython And The Holy Grail
While Le Morte d'Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grail both share a common plot, the works differ on intended purpose and tone. The
audiences each author is trying to appease changes their writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who is
traumatized by numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of bad kings, while Terry Gilliam is trying to entertain a more modern audience that
wants a humorous and satirical movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors differ because each are delivering their works to a situationally
different audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d'Arthur was written, people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the
tunnel after a history of bad kings. Even so, one of the worst Kings of England ever was King Richard III who was reigning just as the book was
written. King Richard was disliked because he took the throne although he was not the next in line. He imprisoned Edward V, who was next in line
for the throne, and killed Lord Hastings, a trusted adviser to King Edward IV, on terms of alleged treason (Biography.com). This audience that
Thomas Malory had to appease was going through hard times of impressment by kings and Malory needed a story that could show the good qualities
of a king like King Arthur. King Arthur is what the people needed as he took the role showing courtly love and chivalry. Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur

Analysis : ' The Jetee And 12 Monkeys ' Essay
The idea of fate has always been a topic debate. Are people actually in control of the course their lives? Or, is it all up to fate? Though La JetГ©e and
12 Monkeys approach the story differently, the idea surrounding time and fate is the same; no matter how hard people attempt to alter the past or figure
out the future, they are stuck in the present, guided only by fate. In La JetГ©e, Chris Marker tells the story of a man in a post–apocalyptic France who
is selected to be a part of experiments because of his recurring memory. Drawing from this film, Terry Gilliam created 12 Monkeys which tells a
similar story, but with an American twist. Though each film reflects their own respective cultures onto the screen, they still are able to maintain the
same idea that fate cannot be altered. Created near the end of the French New Wave era, La JetГ©e embodies key traits from this period oftime. Marker
keeps the production low budget by utilizing single shots with the exception of one clip. Another way Marker incorporated aspects from this time is by
casting lesser known actors. With less time and resources being spent on the production and cast, Marker was able to focus more on the creative factors.
Each film shows how French and American cultures differ. Gilliam incorporated typical Hollywood blockbuster elements elements. He had to turn La
JetГ©e into something that most American moviegoers would watch. Gilliam loaded the cast with high–profile names like Bruce Willis

Overzealous Government In Terry Gilliam's Brazil
A critique of the dangers of an overzealous government, Terry Gilliam's Brazil satirically examines how totalitarian states are able to exert such
commanding control over a society through a system plagued by inefficiencies. Such a flawed system seems inherently unsustainable and paradoxical;
however, all historical analyses of totalitarian states reveal the presence of this paradox. Although each has its different ideology to justify the
totalitarian structure, such as Fascism in Nazi Germany and Communism in Soviet Russia, this paradox is pervasive. The society in Brazil is no
exception in fact; Terry Gilliam uses his film as a reflection on how states amass such power and control of a populace. Through the mise–en–scene of

Observation can be made on a macro and micro scale, as behavior of a large group can affect the behavior of individuals (Merton, 1938). In Brazil,
society is regulated and positioned a certain way that satisfies its government. Reaching a desirable achieved status seems hard to accomplish and
only possible if conformed to the Ministry's regime. Sam, however, was offered a promotion by the master status himself, Mr. Helpmann. Seemingly,
Sam's promotion offer was possible because of his ascribed status being the son of Mr. Helpmann's former co–worker and his power–hungry mother's

While the actor who plays Parry did a good job with the outward signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, it was the onset of such symptoms that come
under question. Parry develops his schizophrenia after watching his wife being shot to death in front of him, and while this supports his development
of PTSD, it does not support his subsequent development of schizophrenia (Lim, 2012).
The movie fails to say if Parry was at risk for developing schizophrenia prior to the shooting. Perhaps he had a family member with it, thus increasing
his genetic predisposition to the disease. Although its exact cause is unknown, it is believed that schizophrenia is caused by a combination of both
genetics and environmental contributions (Mayo Clinical Staff, n.d.). The killing of his wife could have been the trigger (e.g. environmental
contribution) that caused his schizophrenic psychotic episodes but the movie; however, leaves two factors unexplained.
It is unclear as to whether Parry was predisposed to this condition via genetics or if his schizophrenia is a separate entity that existed prior to the
incident. This lack of information could lead the public to believe that all PTSD patients will also develop schizophrenia (Lim, 2012). This is a
misconception that could lead to unnecessary fear of or misconstrued thoughts about those with current PTSD diagnoses.

Analysis Of Knights Chivalric Code In Monty Python
The medieval era was one full of strict codes and guidlines on how one should live and behave, among these are the Bible, and most importantly
knights chivalric code. It was this that a knight valued above all other things, a knight was expected to rather die than be called a coward. This code is
heavily satirized in Monty Python. In the film many characteristics of a knight are exaggerated and pointed fun at in various situations.
A knight above all things must be honorable and courteous. It is seen in Monty Python that whatever possibly bizarre situation King Arthur gets himself
in the very first reaction he has is to be courteous and continuing politely with his question or point made where he eventually loses and gives up
on being courteous after being antaganized for why he bangs his coconuts together or when requested to cut down a tree with a herring or why he
is currently King of Britain. In the first scene we see him very strangely act as though he is on a horse while he has his servant carry all his
belongings and bang coconuts together for the sound effect, it seems as though only the knights of the round table do this because we see Roger the
Shrubber ride on a carraige drawn by horses so it is not unlike there is a scarcity of horses but rather the knights choose to do so!
A knight also is expected to be brave and heroic and outstanding, this is counteredby each knights behaviors. First they choose to act as though they ride

W.T. Anderson's Efforts to Aid in Georgia's Advancement...
As editor of the Macon Telegraph from 1914 through 1940 , W.T. Anderson saw cities throughout the Southern United States, such as Macon,
characterized by sheer bedlam and agonizing dejection following the Civil War. He sought to advertise the state of Georgia and the city of Macon as
progressive and reformed in order to attract the northern investors and capital necessary to revitalize the region. Reforming state institutions and social
climate, or at the very least creating and maintaining the façade of Southern progressivism, became the primary focus of the Telegraph. Following his
arrival in 1914, Anderson took a progressive stance on lynching, a heinous act which both made a mockery of the judicial system and race relations, in
order to aid economic and industrially advancement of the South, in particular Georgia, during this era.
Lynchings were commonplace, yet one of the most heinous acts of mob justice dealt out in the Jim Crow era. Between the years 1880 and 1930,
3,343 lynchings occurred in the United States. Eighty percent of lynchings occurred in the American South with the majority of these occurring in
Mississippi and Georgia (Manis 56). Macon was not an exception to the outburst of lynchings. Six known lynchings occurred in Bibb County: one in
1880's, one in the 1890's, one in 1912, and three in years spanning from 1918 to 1922 (Manis 57). The three lynchings that occurred from 1918 to 1922
came at a time when returning WW1 veterans, exposed to entirely

Why Is Monty Python So Popular

  • 1. Why Is Monty Python So Popular Most comedy fans today can't see a can of spam, a dead parrot, or hear the sound of clanging coconuts without immediately thinking of Monty Python. The British comedy group, Monty Python, was formed in the late 1960s, and would have a lasting impact on both television and film that would influences comedians and entertainers for years and years to come. The troupe consisted of six men: Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Jones, andTerry Gilliam who were actors, screenwriters, directors, and illustrators. Monty Python quickly gained attention and success through their sketch comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus which aired in 1965 on BBC. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carry On offered a coarse form of humor and starred actors Charles Hawtry, Joan Sims, Kenneth Williams, Sid James, and Hattie Jacques. These men tackled revered British institutions in a satiric and slapstick fashion–the army, the medical profession, classical history, patriotism, leisure life, and sports (Landy). The Carry On series also spoofed genre forms of empire films, medical melodramas, and historical films. The Carry On films had many similarities to Flying Circus including, the looseness of narrative structure, strings of unrelated and physically pointed gags, a focus on institutions and a bawdy emphasis on gender and class stereotypes, "a consistent refusal of the realism of character acting," and the "insertion of already familiar, usually crude jokes ()." Both the Carry On films and Monty Python discussed social institutions in a mocking fashion. Monty Python often relied on direct address to the audience, often calling attention to the silliness of the actions performed and to the artificialness of the medium which is something that is directly correlated to the Carry On ... • 2. Gender Roles In Monty Python And The Holy Grail Monty Python and the Holy Grail, directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, tells the story of King Arthur and he and his knight's quest for the Holy Grail. The writing and directing of the movie shows the problems of society. Monty Python and the Holy Grail uses satirical techniques to expose gender roles and greed at the expense of others. "The Black knight" exposes how often now and in history gender roles affect society. While it can be displayed in multiple places in the movie, it is most evident here. The scene shows King Arthur encounter a knight keen on fighting. But when king arthur begins chopping off the knights limbs, he is not hurt at all it seems. He responds simply " 'Tis but a flesh wound". When Arthur chops off all of the knights limbs of the knight and he is left just a head... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It shows a mortician collecting dead bodies in a cart and repeatedly yelling "Bring out your dead". In the background several people roll around in the dirt. It then features a customer carrying an alive man and claiming that he is, or will soon be, dead. The customer pays the mortician nine pence and the mortician, eager to be done with the matter, kills the man claiming to be alive and puts him in the cart. This, and the dirty costumes everyone is wearing, is an exaggeration of the poverty of the lower classes. One man killed another for money, and everyone is wearing extremely dirty outfits as well as rolling around in the mud. In addition to exaggeration, parody of a trash truck is utilized in this scene. Before the sick man gets killed, the customer asks "Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.". The mortician answers "Naaah, I got to go on to Robinson's –– they've lost nine today." The customer then asks "Well, when is your next round?". "Thursday." responds the mortician. This dialogue is a parody with certain round days and specific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Writing the Rules in the Film, Brazil Essay Terry Gilliam's dystopian film, Brazil (1985), lays out a visually stunning and ultimately sinister depiction of a future society hounded by an oppressive government's desire for absolute control over the population. Of elementary focus in the film are the roles of technology and the subsequent dehumanization of the modern world and the myth of the "free man" under a totalitarian regime. Gilliam shows our current obsession with technology and information as an exasperating evolution of modernity that is, ultimately, leading us nowhere. Repeatedly, we see the shortcomings of a society that is overly reliant upon systematic response (as displayed by the constant demands for paperwork) and completely lacking in individualism and expression ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next absurd bit of modernity is the innumerable documents that must be signed, stamped, printed, and filed for anything to be accomplished. For example, the 27B–6 forms required for the men from central service to "turn on a kitchen tap." Beyond being a nuisance, the paperwork becomes a sort of malevolent symbol for the totalitarian regime. In the case of the wrongfully arrested Mr. Buttle, the amount of receipts and complaint forms that need to be filed, stamped, and signed to complete an inquiry take so long that the Ministry of Information (M.O.I.) tortures and kills him before the wrongdoing can be uncovered. This example of over reliance on the system shows that the primary malevolent force in the film is not necessarily humans but the procedures and institutions they've created. The people actually responsible for the 'wrongdoing,' such as interrogator Jack Lint, are simply 'doing their jobs' and thus somewhat exempt from any wickedness. Further illustrating the villainous nature of the paperwork is Lowry's final vision of Tuttle being covered by a mass of flying documents and ultimately being consumed by them. A final example of contradictory technology is the constant cosmetic surgery undergone by Sam's mother and her friend, Mrs. Terrain. While it restores some superficial beauty to Mrs. Lowry, Mrs. Terrain is constantly undergoing procedures to no avail. With each successive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Exploring How Genre and Narrative Features Create Meaning... Exploring How Genre and Narrative Features Create Meaning and Generate Audience Response in Twelve Monkeys 'Twelve Monkeys' was directed by Terry Gilliam and released in 1995. Gilliam has written and directed many films including 'Jabberwocky' and the hit 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', which starred many major actors, including Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro and Tobey Maguire. 'Fear and Loathing' follows a journalist and his lawyer as they embark on a drug–fuelled search for the "American dream". This film is similar to 'Twelve Monkeys' in that both are removed from reality and infer a strong sense of surrealism through the way they are presented. In 'Twelve Monkeys' this is done to embed a sense ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What connection does the couple have to the young boy? Will the young boy be the protagonist of the film or is his appearance irrelevant? Gilliam incorporates this purposeful mystery to give us our first taste of the thriller element to the film. During the final shot of the boy's face we begin to hear a woman calling out names, this voice does not seem to belong in the current scene, and it doesn't. The camera cuts to the face of a rugged, sleeping man. We have changed time and place suddenly which immediately serves to confuse the audience. "Cole, James" is the next name that the female voice shouts and the man awakes suddenly. He appears to be lying in some kind of metal cage on a hammock–style bed. Turning to the cage next to him, his friend tells him that they were naming volunteers "and called your name". This sentence confirms that the first man we saw is James Cole. He sighs, rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of his bed. The friends continue to talk. Cole speaks of how none of the volunteers ever come back. The camera shows us a high angle shot of hundreds of other cages like Cole's. One man is being lifted out of his cage by a large hook and we guess that he is one of the 'volunteers'. The place is dark and we suspect it is underground, as the only light in the place is artificial. It is clear that this world is not the world that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Trajectories In Early Childhood Education In early childhood education, many young children with challenging behaviors are suspended or expelled from school, because of their difficult to manage behaviors (Gilliam, 2005). Children who experience these harsh early disciplinary actions in school often continue to present problematic behaviors in school, which can have long–term negative impacts on their educational trajectories (Hemmeter, Santos, & Ostrosky, 2008). According to the U.S. Department of Education (2015), young children who are suspended or expelled from school are almost 10 times more likely to not complete high school, to experience academic failure, and to hold negative attitudes about school. Snowpiercer: The Wilford Train In the movie, Snowpiercer, the world has ended in the result of an environmental catastrophe with the intentions to "reconstruct" the world and it planet was left covered in snow. The only people who are alive are aboard the Wilford Train that circles the earth once each year. Children play a large role in the movie with an effort to expose two different perspectives children are viewed as. For instance, the first type of child was privileged and educated on the history of the Wilford Trains because they were birthed by parents who lived in the front end of the train and were considered as the upper–class citizen. These children were responsible for being educated every day on the history of the Wilford Train. These children were brainwashed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Curtis can be identified as a hero from the character traits he reveals through the movie, which are courageous, leadership and compassion. First, the act of courage happened when Curtis has noticed that the armed men on the tail of the train did not have bullets in their guns. So, Curtis attacks the armed men by killing them and placing a barrel in the doorway to gain access towards the front of the train. No one in the tail of the train believed that it was possible to overturn the armed men because of the fear of being killed by them with their weapons. Secondly, the leadership skills that Curtis has gained throughout his journey towards the front of the train becomes visible. For instance, Gilliam was killed by Wilford's men because Curtis was supposed to replace Wilford as we find out at the end of the movie. After Gilliam's death, Curtis has demonstrated leadership skills as he is forced to take over the mission and has the pressures of all the people in the tail rooting for him. Lastly, Curtis showed compassion towards each person living in the tail of the train because he wanted to figure out what was happening on this train and find their children. The children are the center focus of their journey because they were taken away from their families without a trace or explanation. As their leader, Curtis felt as though it was his duty to travel along the train in hopes to find their children and receive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have come a long way and I am happy to say that I will be graduating this upcoming spring. In the past few years that I been at Gilliam I can truly say that I have no complains about this building. • 8. Who Is Lost In La Mancha Lost in La Mancha is a 2002 documentary about Terry Gilliam's unfinished film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote which broke down as the result of a variety of issues seen in the various stages of production. Issues include a lack of money to produce the film, illness, weather problems, issues with poorly trained horses, poor organisation for the location of the film and the absence of an adequate amount of rehearsal beforehand. Before any production took place, before even pre–production begun one of Terry Gilliam's financers pulled out of the project, so his initial 40 million dollar budget turned into 32. One of his actors was diagnosed with a prostate infection just minutes before taking the flight to the film set, and the other actors didn't even arrive till a week ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He's tried many times before to create the film, he has a very unique vision and eccentric imagination. This is why he was forced to film in Europe; America didn't want to spend so much money on a film as out there as it was too much of a risk. The main mistake Terry Gilliam made was continuing to film after one of his financers pulled out, taking 8 million dollars out of the previous 40 million dollar budget they had. He should have tried to find another financer and just delay the production of the film. But even with such a financial setback he failed to dial down any of his scenes, he explained that he wanted every shot to be "difficult", this isn't too bad and such a mindset may result in some amazing shots but it's not a mindset that should still be in play when you lose 8 million dollars of a budget to create a film. He was also involved in making sure the project is meeting the set due dates, in the documentary he is also seen trying to hold everything together when things go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Reflection Paper On Negotiation Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach a beneficial outcome over one or more issues where a conflict exists with respect to at least one of these issues. This beneficial outcome can be for all of the parties involved, or just for one or some of them. Now–a–days openly dominating a negotiation has pretty much gone by the wayside. An emphasis on listening and building a helpful atmosphere is a more accepted negotiating style for both women and men. Potenta suggested that women may have an innate advantage when it comes to listening skills. "It's something that I do better than my male counterparts." Rachel Krol, a lecturer in Wharton's legal studies and business ethics department and the panel's moderator, noted that listening is essential to successful negotiations even though it can seem like a weak position. "Sometimes we feel like whoever is dominating the airwaves is controlling the negotiation and the space." Closely related to listening, openness and collaboration is building long–term relationships, according to some of the speakers. Pereira said that in her industry, one tends to work with the same advisors again and again, and someone on the other side of a negotiation could easily turn up on the same side of the table later on. "we don't always know when someone's going to pop back into our life. It really is so important to negotiate with integrity and build personal relationships as we go." "Long–term relationships are very important in my industry, too, very similar to Jen's," said Potenta. "We're ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Social Injustice In Kettle Bottom Social Injustice Explored in Kettle Bottom At the beginning of the twentieth century, the United States moved from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy based on textile factories, steel mills, and new inventions. The mechanization of America required an energy source, and that energy source wascoal. Diane Gilliam Fisher, a sixty–one–year–old American poet, uses her poems in Kettle Bottom to tell the world about the mining community. Kettle Bottom by Diane Fisher explores the history of West Virginia coal miners' struggle against mine owners as the miners fight for better working conditions and pay, the emotional strain on the miners and their families, and the dangerous working conditions faced by the miners; in order to inform ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to information from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in the early 1900s mine explosions and other accidents claimed thousands of victims. "The deadliest year in United States coal mining history was 1907, when an estimated 3,242 deaths occurred" (Injury Trends in Mining). While many miners died in mine accidents, "For each laborer killed directly, several were maimed, and several more found their lives shortened by coal dust, lead, and other poisons" (Andrews). When a miner was unable to perform his job even if this was due to work related issues, he got replaced. The disabled miner was given no compensation, no resources to provide for his family, and no medical care; he was simply tossed aside by company officials. The chance of an explosion or the collapse of a tunnel roof due to unsafe working conditions and machinery was so great that mothers, wives, and daughters had to memorize physical attributes or tangible aspects of clothing in case they needed to identify the body of a loved one. • 11. The Legend Of King Arthur And Le Morte DArthur Has a book or movie given enjoyment through a hard time? Thomas Malory and Terry Gilliam have opposing writing styles as a result of the context they wrote their texts in. Thomas Malory, author of Le Morte d'Arthur, writes his book as a compilation of tales and Terry Gilliam writes his version as a script for a movie. While both Gilliam and Malory use an episodic narrative, Gilliam writes his movie as a parody to mock old England and other versions of the Legend of King Arthur, and Malory uses his book as a story that includes immense details about a legend. While Le Morte d'Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grail both share a common plot, the works differ on intended purpose and tone. The audiences each author tries to appease changes each author's writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who is traumatized by numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of atrocious kings, while Terry Gilliam is trying to entertain a more modern audience that wants a humorous and satirical movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors, differ in that each are delivering their works to a situationally different audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d'Arthur was written, people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a history of tyrannical kings. Even so, one of the worst Kings of England ever was King Richard III who was reigning just as the book was written. Although King Richard was not the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The infamous British film known as Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975 directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, was considered a cult classic among the comedy genre. But what made it so significant among other films during that era, and why is does it still stand the test of time? Classical films were originally considered more than just another form of entertainment. This form of media allowed artist to visually express their personal views through the big screen. Postmodern lacks a precise definition, but share many aspects of modernism. They are fueled by post–industrialization, and driven by late capitalism. However, there are a few distinctions that make it quite deliberate from its predecessor. • 14. Character Analysis Of Mr. Incredible However, Mr. Frederickson ignores Russell to continue on trying to navigate it without him. The purpose behind that is to show some sense of strength, as an old man he won't exhibit super strength or any sort of power like Mr. Incredible, but instead he exhibits the old saying that with age comes wisdom; within that scene that is exactly what "strength" he is showing. Mr. Frederickson wants to show that he is strong and capable enough to get there without help. However, as the movie progresses his vulnerability becomes more visible. The want to show strength and to appear strong comes from the emasculation of the characters. Mr. Incredible was this well known superhero that went around saving the city from robbers, criminals, and other events. However the city soon retired him for the amount of damage he caused, leading to him having to obtain a real job and provide for a family. His series of events are Mr. Incredible's emasculation. On the other hand is Mr. Frederickson, he however was never a superhero or anything of extravagance. Instead, he was the man in charge of the balloon cart at a zoo. While he wasn't very exciting in the first place, he had had dreams of being able to retire with his wife at Paradise Falls. Mr. Frederickson's retirement with his wife never happens sadly. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones (1975), is a clever film that uses a variety of techniques to satirise King Arthur and his Knights of the Round table. Three techniques the film uses are breaking the dramatic illusion, 2–D animation and anachronisms. This is what puts them apart from other films in their time. First I'm going to talk about breaking the dramatic illusion. Many times in the film Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones use a technique called breaking the dramatic illusion. It is a technique when the filmmaker mentally pokes you in the ribs to give you a reminder that you really are watching a movie while other films do the opposite and try to pull you into the story. My first example is the scene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ARTHUR: There it is! The Bridge of Death! ROBIN: Oh, great. KNIGHT: Look! ARTHUR: There's the old man from Scene 24! BEDEMIR: What is he doing here? With this technique the filmmakers can belittle the famous story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by making this story look trivial. They also use this technique as a tool to put more jokes into the film. Now I'm going to talk about anachronisms. An anachronism is when two or more things come from different time periods, like a power tool in a story set in the middle of the 14th century. My first example of an anachronism is when the french soldiers in the castle talk about the airspeed velocity of a european and african swallow. This is clearly modern science not 932 AD science. GUARD #1: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a 1 pound coconut. ARTHUR: Well, it doesn't matter. It is a way of thinking that's easy to identify but rather hard to define, though world renowned french philosopher Jean–Francois Lyotard tried to in his research as, "Simplifying to the extreme, I define postmodernism as incredulity toward metanarratives." The beauty of postmodernism is the subtle, the things you might not catch the first few viewings, and often appear to pay homage to some older tale, but actually mock it. Similarly, Seamus Heaney used "The squat pen rests; snug as a gun", using the reverse spelling of snug (with dropping the's') to write 'gun' in the same line to emphasise the image of his pen being a weapon. "The squat pen rests; snug as a gun" also shows great contrast with 'snug' being a comfortable and secure word while 'gun' is a word that conjures up images of violence and war. This type of negative, contrasted, imagery is used throughout 'Tichborne's Elegy' to emphasise loss. The examples the best demonstrate the differences and similarities include the time period of the Bubonic plague, the determining of a witch, and the interactions between Sir Robin and his troubadour. The first example that compared the general of knowledge of the time period in the movie with historical facts is the Bubonic Plague (otherwise known as the Black Death). Hoarders acquire their possessions in a multitude of ways. These ways include compulsive buying, attainment of free objects, and in severe cases, stealing. For example, when the grandmother found out that her grandchild was using drugs because of her mother had done it in front of her. The physical transition is the most obvious change, but underneath the thick skin and amongst the complex systems, exists another layer of transitions. Ideas, rationales, ideologies and beliefs all dwell within this layer of each being. It could be said that a nation can also fit this transitional framework. A nation grows in both size (wealth, population, power), and in ideological maturity (emancipation of slaves, civil rights, women's rights...etc). This constant evolution of ideas and size is the foundation of a successful government. Without change and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film is riddled with disturbing parallels to current governments close to home. In Sam Lowry's peculiar world, he works as an employee of the Ministry of Information's Department of Records. The Ministry is the umbrella corporation/government that runs everything from utilities and credit ratings to enforcing the confusing laws that they themselves have created. The working environment is presented to the viewer as efficiency at its finest. His office shows every person engaged dutifully in their quest for filing the right papers into the right files. Not a paper is discarded on the floor; every paper is clearly accounted for. The man who is in charge of the operation, Mr. Kurtzmann, is seen standing next to his office door holding a militant stance, watch in hand, suspiciously supervising his lively mechanism. The whole environment exudes subtle nobility in working for a greater good. This is quite typical of what would be considered a utopia for government offices. The employees participating in the great American Dream, chasing the promotion, the bigger house down the block. Yet before long Gilliam shows that the efficiency is purely superficial. Once Mr. Kurtzmann steps inside of his office the televisions are flicked to life and the whole machine stops. The workers show no difficulty in ignoring their duties. The truth behind this once seemingly perfect workspace shows itself only moments later, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Life Of Gerald Gilliam The Life of Gerald Gilliam in Song G Eazy, or Girard Earl Gilliam was born May 24th 1989 and is a producer and hip hop recording artist. When he was in first grade his parents split up and he moved with his mother to North Oakland. When he was 12 years his mother started seeing another women named Melissa Mills. Although he was initially embarrassed, Gillum eventually began to enjoy Mills' company. However, Gilliam 's life soon took a tragic turn when he came home after school and found Mills dead from an overdose of. This experience became the foundation of his song "Everything Will Be Okay" and was the catalyst for a lifelong tendency of Gilliam 's to base his music off his real life experiences. A particularly good example of this is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another great example of Gilliam 's use of imagery is the repeated chorus "Swimming in money". ( Owens.) With this line Gilliam to is not only appealing to the current popular rap culture, which is predominantly made up of songs talking about money and the subsequent use of it, but is also mocking said culture, himself included. Gilliam almost appears to be at loss for what he should do with this money, as he comments on Which automatically makes your mind think of a bathtub full of money or cash. But what I really think he 's saying is that he has so much money he doesn 't know what to do with it, evidenced by the lines "They all take the money for granted. But don 't want to work for it tell me now, isn 't it funny? Nah". ( Owens.) A final great example of imagery is when Gilliam raps about "Having dreams that I'm folding cake", ( Owens.) a scenario that could take many forms. Although initially many people would hear as a relatively straightforward idea, Gilliam wanting cake, there is a much deeper meaning behind this line. Gilliam grew up poor, and as shown in the famous (yet misquoted) line by Marie Antoinette, cake is oftentimes seen as a delicacy afforded to only the rich. This line in particular sets up the main theme of "Me, Myself and I", which is Gallium 's determination to make it on his own. Gilliam really hits on this theme during the chorus, where he repeats the line "Solo ride until I die, cause I got me for life" ( Owens.) , hitting home his this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Comparison Of Le Morte DPython And The Holy Grail While Le Morte d'Arthur and Monty Python and the Holy Grail both share a common plot, the works differ on intended purpose and tone. The audiences each author is trying to appease changes their writing style; Thomas Malory is trying to appease a fifteenth century audience who is traumatized by numerous uprisings and despair due to a history of bad kings, while Terry Gilliam is trying to entertain a more modern audience that wants a humorous and satirical movie. The intended purpose of each of the authors differ because each are delivering their works to a situationally different audience. In the fifteenth century, when Le Morte d'Arthur was written, people were just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel after a history of bad kings. Even so, one of the worst Kings of England ever was King Richard III who was reigning just as the book was written. King Richard was disliked because he took the throne although he was not the next in line. He imprisoned Edward V, who was next in line for the throne, and killed Lord Hastings, a trusted adviser to King Edward IV, on terms of alleged treason (Biography.com). This audience that Thomas Malory had to appease was going through hard times of impressment by kings and Malory needed a story that could show the good qualities of a king like King Arthur. King Arthur is what the people needed as he took the role showing courtly love and chivalry. Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur gave people enjoyment and happiness in a time of ... • 34. Analysis : ' The Jetee And 12 Monkeys ' Essay The idea of fate has always been a topic debate. Are people actually in control of the course their lives? Or, is it all up to fate? Though La JetГ©e and 12 Monkeys approach the story differently, the idea surrounding time and fate is the same; no matter how hard people attempt to alter the past or figure out the future, they are stuck in the present, guided only by fate. In La JetГ©e, Chris Marker tells the story of a man in a post–apocalyptic France who is selected to be a part of experiments because of his recurring memory. Drawing from this film, Terry Gilliam created 12 Monkeys which tells a similar story, but with an American twist. Though each film reflects their own respective cultures onto the screen, they still are able to maintain the same idea that fate cannot be altered. Created near the end of the French New Wave era, La JetГ©e embodies key traits from this period oftime. Marker keeps the production low budget by utilizing single shots with the exception of one clip. Another way Marker incorporated aspects from this time is by casting lesser known actors. With less time and resources being spent on the production and cast, Marker was able to focus more on the creative factors. Each film shows how French and American cultures differ. Gilliam incorporated typical Hollywood blockbuster elements elements. He had to turn La JetГ©e into something that most American moviegoers would watch. Gilliam loaded the cast with high–profile names like Bruce Willis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Overzealous Government In Terry Gilliam's Brazil A critique of the dangers of an overzealous government, Terry Gilliam's Brazil satirically examines how totalitarian states are able to exert such commanding control over a society through a system plagued by inefficiencies. Such a flawed system seems inherently unsustainable and paradoxical; however, all historical analyses of totalitarian states reveal the presence of this paradox. Although each has its different ideology to justify the totalitarian structure, such as Fascism in Nazi Germany and Communism in Soviet Russia, this paradox is pervasive. The society in Brazil is no exception in fact; Terry Gilliam uses his film as a reflection on how states amass such power and control of a populace. Through the mise–en–scene of the film, ... The call he places is intercepted by Tuttle, who comes to Sam's rescue without the proper paperwork, licensing, or authority and fixes the system in a matter of minutes. An outcast from society, Tuttle is the only character that can be described as not demoralized and integrally happy. It is these qualities that make him a target of the state. Although a mentor has difficult requisites, it is up to someone to stand up and take a role, and I believe that I have the enough potential to guide future leaders through the beginning of their path to success. To begin with, I already have two years of experience as a high school student so I now know how the classes and how one can socialize at Gilliam. As a Gilliam student, I know that when one is shifted to a different environment everything may seem confusing and complicated. When it comes to my academics, I am on top of my game with all my classes including electives, core, AP, andcollege classes. If I can take the information on how to pass classes and how to pass them with a high grade and teach other people how to use this knowledge, then I can actually help Gilliam become a better school. I want other students to be as successful and hopefully be able to share these ideas with even more students. I would like to be a mentor to show students what classes to take, which ones to avoid, and which ones are advantageous. Finally, I am willing to teach anyone and make them to someone who can obtain both respect and power. I get along with anyone as long as they show effort in both inside and outside of school. • 37. Analysis Of Terry Gilliam 's ' The Season Of This... Tis the season in this dystopia, controlled by pitiless bureaucrats and synergetic police. Terry Gilliam's Brazil depicts a retro–futuristic setting dominated by a relentless totalitarian system. The setting of Brazil takes place during Christmas in an urban region that is never characterized by name but by its contents. The civilization presented in the film is distasteful, naive, lifeless, and overseen. Uninspiring infrastructure, apathetic socializations, and lack of sanctuaries illustrates this society and it seems to be an intended tactic by its government. Bulky grey ducts surround the environment, which could be a representation of inadequate innovation of technology and culture or are a reminding factor that the micromanaging... In Brazil, society is regulated and positioned a certain way that satisfies its government. Reaching a desirable achieved status seems hard to accomplish and only possible if conformed to the Ministry's regime. Sam, however, was offered a promotion by the master status himself, Mr. Helpmann. Seemingly, Sam's promotion offer was possible because of his ascribed status being the son of Mr. Helpmann's former co–worker and his power–hungry mother's connection with the Ministry. The social institution in the world of Brazil is centralized to abide the Ministry, who targets society to be uniformed and consumers. Considering the "Consumers for Christ" signs and the girls who wishes to Santa for her own "credit card", there is an encompassing feeling of consumerism that citizens believe as holy. Displays of TГ¶nnies' Gesellschaft are frequent, as social control must rest on more formal techniques, such as laws and legally defined punishments (Schaefer, 2013). Behaviors of the people are carried with the subconscious awareness of the Ministry, hence the lack of individualism and expectation of carrying out usual social roles and norms. • 38. The Fisher King: Movie Analysis An Analysis of Mental Health in the Movie: The Fisher King Studies have shown that one of the public's primary sources of information regarding mental health disorders is mass media (Fawcett, 2015). This makes it incredibly important for movies, newspapers, and television shows to provide society with accurate depictions of mental health. While there are media outlets who portray mental health correctly, there are also ones that depict the subject via stereotypes or in a negative light (Fawcett, 2015). This can lead to people developing an unfavorable, or worse, inaccurate view of what mental illness truly is. While the actor who plays Parry did a good job with the outward signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, it was the onset of such symptoms that come under question. Parry develops his schizophrenia after watching his wife being shot to death in front of him, and while this supports his development of PTSD, it does not support his subsequent development of schizophrenia (Lim, 2012). The movie fails to say if Parry was at risk for developing schizophrenia prior to the shooting. Perhaps he had a family member with it, thus increasing his genetic predisposition to the disease. Although its exact cause is unknown, it is believed that schizophrenia is caused by a combination of both genetics and environmental contributions (Mayo Clinical Staff, n.d.). The killing of his wife could have been the trigger (e.g. environmental contribution) that caused his schizophrenic psychotic episodes but the movie; however, leaves two factors unexplained. It is unclear as to whether Parry was predisposed to this condition via genetics or if his schizophrenia is a separate entity that existed prior to the incident. This lack of information could lead the public to believe that all PTSD patients will also develop schizophrenia (Lim, 2012). This is a misconception that could lead to unnecessary fear of or misconstrued thoughts about those with current PTSD diagnoses. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Analysis Of Knights Chivalric Code In Monty Python The medieval era was one full of strict codes and guidlines on how one should live and behave, among these are the Bible, and most importantly knights chivalric code. It was this that a knight valued above all other things, a knight was expected to rather die than be called a coward. This code is heavily satirized in Monty Python. In the film many characteristics of a knight are exaggerated and pointed fun at in various situations. A knight above all things must be honorable and courteous. It is seen in Monty Python that whatever possibly bizarre situation King Arthur gets himself in the very first reaction he has is to be courteous and continuing politely with his question or point made where he eventually loses and gives up on being courteous after being antaganized for why he bangs his coconuts together or when requested to cut down a tree with a herring or why he is currently King of Britain. In the first scene we see him very strangely act as though he is on a horse while he has his servant carry all his belongings and bang coconuts together for the sound effect, it seems as though only the knights of the round table do this because we see Roger the Shrubber ride on a carraige drawn by horses so it is not unlike there is a scarcity of horses but rather the knights choose to do so! A knight also is expected to be brave and heroic and outstanding, this is counteredby each knights behaviors. First they choose to act as though they ride horses instead of buying them, ... • 40. W.T. Anderson's Efforts to Aid in Georgia's Advancement... As editor of the Macon Telegraph from 1914 through 1940 , W.T. Anderson saw cities throughout the Southern United States, such as Macon, characterized by sheer bedlam and agonizing dejection following the Civil War. He sought to advertise the state of Georgia and the city of Macon as progressive and reformed in order to attract the northern investors and capital necessary to revitalize the region. Reforming state institutions and social climate, or at the very least creating and maintaining the faГ§ade of Southern progressivism, became the primary focus of the Telegraph. Following his arrival in 1914, Anderson took a progressive stance on lynching, a heinous act which both made a mockery of the judicial system and race relations, in order to aid economic and industrially advancement of the South, in particular Georgia, during this era. Lynchings were commonplace, yet one of the most heinous acts of mob justice dealt out in the Jim Crow era. Between the years 1880 and 1930, 3,343 lynchings occurred in the United States. Eighty percent of lynchings occurred in the American South with the majority of these occurring in Mississippi and Georgia (Manis 56). Macon was not an exception to the outburst of lynchings. Six known lynchings occurred in Bibb County: one in 1880's, one in the 1890's, one in 1912, and three in years spanning from 1918 to 1922 (Manis 57).
